DC Open 2025: Raducanu downs Kostyuk, Osaka awaits in next round showdown

Emma Raducanu handed No. 7 seed Marta Kostyuk a sixth consecutive loss Tuesday, defeating her 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the DC Open to prolong a slide that now has lasted more than two months.
This was the fifth tournament in a row where Kostyuk exited in the first round; she also lost in the fourth round at Rome, starting the current rut. She hasn't won a match since May 11 in Rome.
The 46th-ranked Raducanu, who won the 2021 U.S. Open, will face four-time major champion Naomi Osaka next. Osaka was a 6-2, 7-5 winner against Yulia Putintseva.
In men's action at the hard-court tournament, Cam Norrie eliminated No. 2 seed Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, keeping the Italian without a win since he got injured last month at the French Open and needed to quit playing in the semifinals. Musetti lost in the first round at Wimbledon, a year after reaching the semifinals there.
Holger Rune, who was seeded third in Washington, withdrew before his match Tuesday because of a back injury.
Venus Williams was scheduled to play her first singles match in more than a year Tuesday night against Peyton Stearns. The 45-year-old Williams won in doubles at the DC Open on Monday.

Benjamin Sesko has great potential, will feel at home in Manchester United: Amorim

New Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has all the attributes needed to help bolster their attack, manager Ruben Amorim said as he hopes to unlock the 22-year-old Slovenian's full potential after his big-money move to Old Trafford. Sesko completed his 76.5-million-euro (USD 89-million) switch from German side RB Leipzig to United on Saturday, with a further 8.5 million euros in bonuses. He signed a contract until 2030 to complete a new-look front three alongside fellow close-season signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. The Slovenia international, capped 41 times, scored 39 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig. A new chapter ready to be written in the Benjamin Sesko story 📖 — Premier League (@premierleague) August 9, 2025 'He has the characteristics that we needed,' Amorim told MUTV on Saturday. 'Ben is a player - with all the information that we have - that we need to stop the guy from working, not the opposite! 'So that is also important. He's really young. He's good in the air, he's good at running the channels, and good on the ball. I think he has great potential. He can improve a lot and, for sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. 'He has the right character to be in this group, so I'm really happy to have him.' Sesko was introduced at Old Trafford before Saturday's friendly match against Italian side Fiorentina, which United won 5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1. 'He is going to a new building (at Carrington), which is also important. Things are getting better, but in the end, we need to win games.' United, which has spent around 200 million pounds ($270 million) following its 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season — its lowest in the top flight in 51 years — begins its new league campaign at home against Arsenal on August 17.

Cincinnati Open 2025: Defending champions Sabalenka, Sinner through to third round

World number one Aryna Sabalenka saved 12 break points to survive her Cincinnati opener against Czech Marketa Vondrousova 7-5, 6-1 on Saturday, as the men's defending champion Jannik Sinner cruised past Colombian qualifier Daniel Galan 6-1, 6-1. Sabalenka, who had a first-round bye, had not played since her semifinal defeat at Wimbledon and said the downtime served her well as she mounted a tremendous defensive effort to set up a meeting with Briton Emma Raducanu. 'I played so many matches this season, so I'm quite experienced to handle those key moments. Key for me is always to go for it without doubting my decisions. So far, it's been working really well,' Sabalenka told Tennis Channel. Raducanu made easy work of Serbian Olga Danilovic 6-3, 6-2 in her first match under new coach Francisco Roig, after a handful of confidence-building performances this summer that included a trip to the semifinals at the Washington Open. 'I'm building some momentum. I'm really happy with how I've stayed pretty consistent over the last few months,' said Raducanu, who lost to Sabalenka in a third-round thriller at Wimbledon this year. 'I still feel like there's a long way to go, but just working hard behind the scenes, putting a lot of hours in and hoping I can trust in that,' she added. ALSO READ | U.S. Open — Former World No. 2 Badosa out with injury; Jil Teichmann moves into main draw Italy's Sinner, who also took a break following his Wimbledon win, was in pristine form as he produced just four unforced errors to swat aside Galan in 59 minutes earlier in the day. He will next play Canadian Gabriel Diallo. 'It's very difficult to play here, I feel like the ball is flying, it's very fast. So when you lose confidence with a couple of shots, it makes it very, very difficult to play,' said Sinner. Poland's third seed Iga Swiatek was back on top form after an early exit in Montreal as she sprinted through the first set and fended off four break points in the second to beat Anastasia Potapova comfortably 6-1, 6-4. She next plays Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, whom she has defeated in all three previous meetings, in the third round of the U.S. Open tune-up tournament. Australian Open winner Madison Keys had a tougher opening to her Cincinnati campaign, saving two match points to survive against German Eva Lys with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(1) win to punch her ticket to the third round, where she will play Japan's Aoi Ito. 'I just kept trying to listen to everyone here cheering me. It helped me get back into the match and across the finish line,' said American Keys, who triumphed in 2019 and clinched Saturday's affair with an unreturnable forehand. Earlier on Saturday, Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech upset Norwegian 11th seed Casper Ruud 6-7(5) 6-4 6-2, while eighth-seeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti lost to France's Benjamin Bonzi 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(4). Fourth seed Taylor Fritz sent over a dozen aces to close out the day's programme on Centre Court with a routine 6-4, 6-4 win over American compatriot Emilio Nava and book a meeting with Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
