HONOLULU (KHON2) — On Monday, June 2, 2025, Hawaiʻi is marking a historic milestone as Pride flags are being flown at the State Capitol for the first time in history. Governor Josh Green, M.D. authorized the display which is raising eight flags along South Beretania Street, to commemorate Pride Month. The flags include the progressive Pride flag, which incorporates rainbow stripes representing people of color, transgender individuals, intersex individuals and those living with HIV/AIDS. Dean Hamer, co-director of the Lei Pua ʻAla Queer Histories of Hawaiʻi Project, expressed his excitement. 'We are very excited that this year, for the first year ever, the Hawaiʻi state capital is going to be flying pride flags,' Hamer said. He emphasized the significance of this act, especially in the current climate where several states have restricted the display of Pride flags. 'It's especially exciting right now as we are witnessing this sort of regression where now 12 different states are trying to or already have restricted the flying of pride flags,' Hamer Wilson, co-director of the project, highlighted the importance of the Capitol as a symbol of governance and representation. 'Especially there. Right. Because, you know, in that building, that big, beautiful building on Beretania Street. Our lives and, you know, the issues that intersect with the lives of people across our communities are often on the agenda in that building,' Wilson remarked. He continued, 'So to see these flags as a symbol of, you know, the diversity of our communities that were seen and, in this case, in a respected way, in a place where decisions are being made by people, about our lives.' Michael Golojuch, Jr., Vice-Chair of the Hawaiʻi State LGBTQ+ Commission, praised the event as a culmination of years of advocacy. 'We were thrilled when Governor Josh Green granted permission to fly the Pride Flags for the month of June. It marks the first time in our state's history this honor has been bestowed in recognition of Pride Month,' explained Commissioner Golojuch. 'It all began with the Hawaiʻi State LGBTQ+ Commission's request for a proclamation declaring June as Pride Month, something that hasn't happened since the Abercrombie administration. From that first step, the momentum grew, leading to this year's historic Pride Flag Raising Ceremony hosted by the Governor himself.' The flag-raising ceremony was part of a broader initiative to honor and uplift the LGBTQ+ community in Hawaiʻi. Earlier this year, the Hawaiʻi State LGBTQ+ Commission hosted its inaugural Queer Day at the Capitol which brought together various advocacy groups to discuss key issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community. 'This moment highlights exactly why the Hawaiʻi State LGBTQ+ Commission exists. Gov. Spencer Cox issued a statement Sunday acknowledging Pride Month — but again eschewed mention of LGBTQ+ communities in favor of a celebration of " building bridges." The big picture: Pride Month proclamations have become an annual point of controversy for Cox, drawing complaints from across the political spectrum. Conservatives complain the statements are "woke," while progressives decry wording that falls short of full-throated support for queer Utahns. The intrigue: In Sunday's post on X, Cox did not call on Utahns to celebrate Pride — nor did it indicate whether he planned to celebrate Pride Month himself. Instead, he said he would spend the month "reflecting on the values that bring us together here in Utah — service, respect, and love for our neighbor." FBI seeks tips on hospitals, clinics performing gender-affirming surgeries on children
The FBI is urging people to report health care providers who may be assisting transgender minors with gender-affirming care, as part of the Trump administration's mission to 'protect children.' 'As the Attorney General has made clear, we will protect our children and hold accountable those who mutilate them under the guise of gender-affirming care,' the FBI's official account wrote on the social platform X on Monday, urging followers to 'report tips of any hospitals, clinics or practitioners performing these surgical procedures on children' to its phone and web tip lines. According to the independent KFF policy tracker, youth gender-affirming care has been outlawed in 27 states — starting with Arkansas in 2021. Seventeen states are facing legal challenges over the restrictions, so they have been temporarily put on hold. Gender-affirming care covers any medical, mental health and non-medical services for transgender and nonbinary people but all of the restrictions that states have adopted include surgical procedures. President Trump signed an executive order just hours after his return to office in January recognizing male and female as the only two sexes and directing federal agencies to cease promotion of the concept of gender transition. He issued another order a week later meant to broadly restrict access to gender-affirming care for transgender children and teenagers younger than 19. Under those directives, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHS) has adopted the position that it 'rejects gender ideology and condemns the harms it causes to children, by promoting their chemical and surgical mutilation, and to women, by depriving them of their dignity, safety, well-being, and opportunities' and removed a web page on gender affirming care from its website because it 'does not reflect biological reality and therefore the Administration and this Department rejects it.' The FBI's call for tips comes as the LGBTQ community celebrates Pride Month and Washington, D.C., hosts the 2025 World Pride festivities. Trump vowed to root out what he often referred to as 'transgender insanity' and 'transgender lunacy' during his reelection campaign for president last year. Less than 2 percent of the U.S. population ages 13 and older identifies as transgender or nonbinary. Gender-affirming care, especially surgical, also is rare for minors and considered on a case-by-case basis. HHS released a report last month on the issue but offered no recommendations or guidelines for health care providers. KFF found that about 40 percent of trans youth ages 13 to 17 live in states have adopted limits on gender-affirming care options.
