Horse racing trainer D. Wayne Lukas in hospice care after hospitalization

USA Today23-06-2025
Legendary thoroughbred trainer D. Wayne Lukas, 89, is back home for hospice care after being hospitalized in Louisville.
Lukas had a MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system while also worsening some preexisting conditions, according to a statement released by the Lukas family.
The family stated that Lukas declined an aggressive treatment plan, intending to spend his remaining time with his wife and family at home.
The Hall of Famer's career spanned more than six decades, working with horses that earned victories at notable race tracks.
A succession plan was implemented by Lukas Enterprises Inc., and all horses previously trained by Lukas have been transferred to veteran assistant Sebastian 'Bas' Nicholl.

D. Wayne Lukas' biography
Lukas made a name for himself in Southern California, earning his first documented win as a thoroughbred trainer at Santa Anita Park on Oct. 20, 1977, at age 42.
He would train thoroughbreds full-time in 1978 with seven horses and became known throughout his career for his trademark barns, which featured a white picket fence, beds of flowers, and painted feed tubs used for decoration.
He had a stable based at Churchill Downs in Kentucky since 1989.
"A special man, he's been a great friend and very much a father figure to me," Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Kenny McPeek told The Courier Journal. "He raised the standards for our sport to the highest level. An amazing man."
More: The 2025 Preakness was thrilling. It was also a big missed opportunity for horse racing.
D. Wayne Lukas' accomplishments
Lukas had 4,967 documented thoroughbred victories (637 of the 1,105 stakes wins were graded) during his career. His horses earned more than $301 million from 30,607 starts, according to Churchill Downs.
The trainer has won the Kentucky Derby four times and the Longines Kentucky Oaks five times during his career. A total of 26 horses trained by Lukas went on to win Eclipse Award championships, including three that were tabbed as Horse of the Year.
Lukas' 15 Triple Crown races are second only to trainer Bob Baffert, who has 17 in his career.
He was enshrined in horse racing's Hall of Fame in 1999 and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2007, becoming the first person recognized as a member of both.
He had success with quarter horses as well during the 1970s at tracks such as Los Alamitos.

Aaron Donald takes 4 of the top-10 best DT seasons since 2019

It's hard to pick another defensive tackle better than Los Angeles Rams legend Aaron Donald. The Rams' star made the Pro Bowl all 10 years he played in the NFL, as well as eight first-team All-Pro teams and three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards. He was a top-5 vote-getter for DPOY four other teams, too. So, it's not terribly surprising that some of Donald's seasons rank among the best by a defensive tackle over the past six seasons. But, according to Pro Football Network, Donald's four best seasons took the top-four spots in their top-10 rankings since 2019. These were ranked on PFN's DT+ metric. Here's how the seasons broke down for Donald: Now, it should be noted that Donald's 2018 season, when he led the NFL with 20.5 sacks, wasn't included because it predated the 2019 cut-off. But the rest of these seasons make sense. Donald tallied 12.5 sacks in 2021 with 19 tackles for a loss, 25 quarterback hits and four forced fumbles in the Rams' Super Bowl-winning year. He also came in third for DPOY. In 2019, Donald led the NFL with 20 tackles for a loss to go with his 12.5 sacks and 24 quarterback hits. He finished fifth in DPOY. Oddly enough, Donald's best statistical season and third DPOY award ranked third on this list. He tallied 13.5 sacks — his second most in a season after his 2018 year — with 14 tackles for a loss, 28 quarterback hits and a NFL-leading approximate value (via Pro Football Reference) of 23. Donald's final NFL season in 2023 ranked fourth on the list. He registered eight sacks, 16 tackles for a loss and 23 quarterback hits. While he didn't make the DPOY top-5, he finished ninth in Comeback Player of the Year after he missed six games in 2022. Donald was one of the best defensive players of the past decade and played every year for the Rams. It will be tough for any defensive tackle in the near future to come close to the accomplishments of Donald.

Raiders trade young cornerback Jakorian Bennett to Eagles in surprise move

The Eagles are always wheeling and dealing. In the wee hours of Monday night, the Eagles traded interior defensive lineman Thomas Booker to the Raiders in exchange for outside cornerback Jakorian Bennett, in a deal that took some by surprise. Booker, 25, was originally drafted by the Texans in the fifth round in 2022 before becoming a rotation player for the Super Bowl-winning Eagles last season. Getty Images Booker played in all 21 games — including the postseason — for Philadelphia, although he never started a game with stars Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis clogging things up in the middle. Bennett, 24, is largely regarded as a promising young cornerback. The trade sent some fans into rage. As a 23-year-old, Bennett started in 11 games over the past two years after he was drafted in the fourth round in 2023 out of Maryland. Bennett is the only cornerback in the NFL with 300-plus defensive snaps who did not allow a touchdown in 2024. Bennett also allowed less than 5.5 yards per target and sub-70 passer rating when targeted, the only cornerback to accomplish this last season. Cornerback depth is always in high demand in the NFL, where stopping the pass is the highest priority. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has a reputation as being one of the shrewdest traders in the NFL — while the Raiders, though under new leadership now with minority owner Tom Brady and first-year GM John Spytek, have been a laughingstock in recent seasons. Some have been criticizing the Raiders for trading with the Eagles for a defensive lineman after they waived another defensive lineman last season in Byron Young, who eventually went on to be claimed by Philadelphia and could take the spot vacated by Booker.
