Ringgit extends gain against US dollar in opening trade

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit continued to strengthen against the US dollar at the opening session on Monday, continuing from last Friday, as the Malaysian economy was projected to grow higher in the second quarter, signalling that the country's economy remains resilient.
Malaysia's economy was forecast to grow by 4.5% in the second quarter based on advance gross domestic product (GDP) estimates last Friday, slightly outpacing the previous quarter's 4.4%.
At 8am, the ringgit rose to 4.2330/4.2540 against the greenback, compared to Friday's close of 4.2410/4.2455.
However, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid sees the ringgit remaining in a narrow range as concerns over US tariffs continue to affect market sentiment as the Aug 1 deadline looms. 'As such, expect ringgit to range between RM4.24 and RM4.25 today as traders remain fairly cautious,' he noted.
At the opening, the ringgit was traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies.
It dipped against the Japanese yen to 2.8518/2.8662 from 2.8517/2.8549, strengthened against the British pound to 5.6790/5.7072 from 5.6999/5.7060 and advanced versus the euro to 4.9230/4.9474 from 4.9336/4.9388 at Friday's close.
The local note also trended higher against most Asean currencies.
It rose vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.2944/3.3110 from 3.3027/3.3065, gained against the Thai baht to 13.0608/13.1337 from 13.3027/13.3065, appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.7/261.1 from 260.2/260.6 and edged up versus the Philippine peso to 7.40/7.44 from 7.41/7.43. previously.

Cambodian and Thai officials meet in Malaysia; both countries are aiming to iron out ceasefire details

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP): Thai and Cambodian officials met in Malaysia on Monday for the first round of cross-border committee talks since a tense ceasefire was brokered last week after five days of deadly armed border clashes that killed dozens and displaced over 260,000 people. The four-day General Border Committee meetings were initially due to be hosted by Cambodia, but both sides later agreed to a neutral venue in Malaysia, the annual chair of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), which has mediated the halt in hostilities last month. The July 28 ceasefire followed economic pressure from US President Donald Trump, who had warned the two warring nations that the U.S. would not conclude trade deals with them if the fighting persisted. Washington lowered tariffs on goods from the two countries from 36% to 19% on Aug. 1 following the truce. Monday's talks focused on ironing out details to avoid further clashes. Discussions of the decades-long competing territorial claims over the pockets of land near the shared border are not on the agenda. Thailand and Cambodia have been feuding neighbours for centuries, since both were mighty empires. In modern times, a 1962 ruling by the International Court of Justice awarding Cambodia the land on which the ancient Preah Vihear temple stands marked a new low point in relations, and other border territory remained claimed by both countries. Fighting erupted in 2011 at Preah Vihaer, after which the International Court of Justice in 2013 reaffirmed its earlier ruling, rankling Thailand. Relations deteriorated again sharply in May this year, when a Cambodian soldier was shot dead in a brief fracas in one of the disputed border zones, setting off diplomatic and trade sanctions, one against the other. Soon after two incidents last month in which Thai soldiers were wounded by land mines in disputed territory, for which Thailand blamed Cambodia, the two sides downgraded diplomatic relations and fighting broke out, each side blaming the other for starting the armed clashes. The talks this week will include finalizing details and scope of reference for an Asean monitoring team, Malaysian Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Mohamad Nizam Jaffar said Monday. Despite some reports of attacks after the ceasefire came into effect, Nizam said such incidents were typical spillover violence and both sides showed strong commitment during Monday's talks to uphold the ceasefire. The main session of the General Border Committee on Thursday will be led by Thai Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Natthaphon Nakpanit and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister cum Defense Minister Tea Seih and include observers from Malaysia, the United States and China, officials said. Despite the truce, tensions have persisted as both countries organised tours of the former battle areas for foreign diplomats and other observers to highlight damage allegedly caused by the other side. The two countries also continue to accuse each other of having violated international humanitarian laws with attacks on civilians and the use of illegal weapons. - AP

Bumi Armada, MISC call off merger plans as MoU nears expiry

KUALA LUMPUR: Bumi Armada Bhd and MISC Bhd have mutually agreed not to proceed with their proposed merger, with the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two parties set to lapse on Aug 14, 2025. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, Bumi Armada said it will continue to pursue strategic growth opportunities, supported by its robust financial position. It was reported that Bumi Armada had inked an MoU with MISC on Nov 14, 2024 to explore a prospective merger with MISC's offshore business via an all-shares transaction. The partnership was announced to create a Malaysia-based, sector-focused entity that will utilise the combined talent pool, project development and engineering capabilities, along with the expertise of both MISC's offshore business and Bumi Armada. The MoU was effective for nine months from the date of signing, until the execution of definitive agreement(s) or termination of the MoU, whichever occurred earlier, unless otherwise agreed by the parties. - Bernama

Puncak Niaga's subsidiary to dispose of 3 loss-making units for RM3

Puncak Niaga said the three entities have been inactive and incurred losses since their acquisition by TRIplc Bhd in 2018 for RM210 million. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd's wholly-owned subsidiary, TRIplc Bhd, is disposing of its 100% stake in each of three dormant and loss-making units for a total cash consideration of RM3, as part of efforts to streamline its corporate structure and reduce costs. The three companies involved in the proposed disposal are Layar Kekal (M) Sdn Bhd, Samasys Sdn Bhd and Tirai Gemilang Sdn Bhd, each to be sold for RM1, Puncak Niaga said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today. Puncak Niaga said the three entities have been inactive and incurred losses since their acquisition by TRIplc on May 31, 2018, for RM210 million, while the total cost of investment in the three companies was RM150 million. 'The board was of the opinion that the cash consideration of RM1 on each company is reasonable, as it enables the group to streamline its structure and achieve cost savings on annual statutory fees,' it said. According to the latest audited financial statements for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024, Layar Kekal, Samasys and Tirai Gemilang recorded net losses of RM5.38 million, RM5.11 million and RM5.30 million respectively and all three companies had net liabilities of RM3,400 each. Puncak Niaga also clarified that the announcement of the disposal was delayed because the company only received the duly stamped share sale agreements in the late evening of July 30, 2025. 'As the stamping of the agreements is essential to formalise the transaction, the company proceeded to make the announcement on the next market day – July 31, 2025. 'The short delay was also required to complete internal verification and ensure compliance with Bursa's disclosure requirements under the Main Market Listing Requirements,' it added. Puncak Niaga also disclosed that all three companies share the same set of directors, namely Rozali Ismail, Taufik Afendy Othman, Azlan Shah Rozali, Faridatulzakiah Bakhry, and Shahree Shamsuddin. Copies of the audited financial statements for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024, and May 31, 2018, are available for inspection at Puncak Niaga's registered office in Shah Alam for a period of three months from the date of this announcement.
