NotebookLM is no ordinary digital notebook. It doesn't have pages, even virtual ones. You don't just drop some info into it and move on. That's because NotebookLM doesn't just organise your information. Thanks to AI smarts under the hood, it 'understands' what you feed it. This means it can help you summarise information and even deliver insights and connections between ideas. To find NotebookLM, well, just Google it. Sign in with your Google account and you're in. There's an app as well, but I'd recommend ignoring it for now, except for lining up stuff to listen to, because it's missing all the best features. I've been using NotebookLM for a few months and I can't believe the free tier gives you access to almost everything. NotebookLM Plus, which comes with a paid subscription to Gemini and Google's storage plan, increases the token limit but delivers essentially the same experience. How to use it You need no tech know-how to use this fascinating platform. Click the plus sign and you'll see a three-pane interface called Sources, Chat, Studio. It all starts with Sources, which you use to add content. Sticking to one subject, add files from your own device or cloud storage. You can feed it PDFs, Google Doc files, YouTube video links, website links, notes, text files and images in some formats. But don't give it junk – use quality content. You can add up to 50 pieces per notebook and you can have 100 notebooks on the free tier. The content you feed it stays in the cloud but is private to you. You can share notebooks with others, but only by intention and with a link. Unlike general-purpose LLMs such as Gemini and ChatGPT, it isn't prone to hallucinations and sycophancy. There's also a Discover Sources feature that lets you specify what you're looking for and it serves up links you can add to your collection of sources. But be warned, it can often contain sub-par content so you have to vet each one. Where the magic happens The magic begins when you finish uploading your content and move on to the other tabs — Chat and Studio. This is where you can 'interact' with your content using the chatbot. What's great about this is that AI already seems capable of seeing patterns and connections that humans can't. This means it can give you insights and even advice. From these two panes, you can get FAQs, briefing docs, notes and study some point Google added mind maps. These are flow charts of your content, dividing it into subtopics and further subtopics, expanding as you click. This lets you see exactly how the content is organised, idea-wise. Clicking each box in the map takes you to that chunk of content. It's a beautiful structure that you can use for clarity, re-organisation, and insights. You can even use this to plan a presentation or training, to write a paper or book or to quiz students. Another extremely powerful feature is Audio Overview, which we've written about before. It turns your content into a podcast featuring two AI hosts. You can specify whether you want it short, medium or long, and even ask the AI hosts to focus on specific aspects using the Customise box. You can also use an experimental feature to interrupt the hosts and 'join' the podcast by asking a question. Again, this podcast is private to you by default. Video killed the radio star On 29 July Google added the much-anticipated Video Overview feature in the redesigned Studio section. This generates a set of presentation slides with a voiceover by an AI host. Here, too, you can choose what you want the AI to focus on. Video Overviews will apparently feature different formats in the future but even as they are, their potential use for remote training is obvious. It'll be interesting to see how else users put this feature to recently partnered with content sources such as The Economist to start a feature called Featured Notebooks, the first eight of which have appeared in the interface. These high-quality notebooks show how it's done, and can be queried deeply for insights. We recommend you try them before creating your own notebooks. The New Normal: The world is at an inflexion point. Artificial Intelligence is set to be as massive a revolution as the Internet has been. The option to just stay away from AI will not be available to most people, as all the tech we use takes the AI route. This column series introduces AI to the non-techie in an easy and relatable way, aiming to demystify and help a user to actually put the technology to good use in everyday life. Mala Bhargava is most often described as a 'veteran' writer who has contributed to several publications in India since 1995. Her domain is personal tech and she writes to simplify and demystify technology for a non-techie audience.

After Trump Claims "Indian Economy Is Dead", A Question To His Country's AI

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump's claim that the Indian economy is "dead" and the announcement of a sweeping 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports have triggered a political slugfest. To assess the claim, NDTV put forward a straightforward query across artificial intelligence platforms created in Trump's own country. "Is the Indian economy dead?" was posed to five major American AI platforms: ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, Meta AI, and Copilot. Their responses uniformly contradicted Trump's assertion. ChatGPT replied: "India's economy is far from dead. It's dynamic. It is ambitious." Grok said, "No, the Indian economy is not dead. It remains one of the fastest-growing major economies globally." Gemini offered: "The Indian economy is characterised by strong growth." Meta AI agreed: "The Indian economy is not dead. It's one of the fastest-growing major economies globally." Copilot responded even more bluntly: "Not even close. In fact, it's quite the opposite." The Controversy The AI verdicts emerged as Trump escalated his criticism of India, targeting New Delhi's trade relationship with Moscow. Announcing the tariff hike on Indian goods and an unspecified penalty related to India's purchase of Russian crude and defence equipment, Trump posted on Truth Social: "I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world." Union Minister Piyush Goyal dismissed Trump's claim and said that India is the world's fastest-growing major economy and widely expected to be the "third largest economy" in a few years. Trump's remark received endorsement from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who used the occasion to reiterate his critique of India's economic direction under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "He [Trump] is right. Everybody knows this except the prime minister and the finance minister. The Indian economy is a dead economy," Mr Gandhi said. His comments drew swift condemnation from BJP leaders, with party spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill saying, "Rahul Gandhi says 'India is a dead economy'. Rahul Gandhi seems to be confusing Indian economy with Pakistan's! Economy is "Alive & Kicking", Rahul Gandhi's logic is 'Dead': India: > 4ᵗʰ Largest Economy > 2ⁿᵈ Largest Mobile Phone Manufacturer >3ʳᵈ Largest Automobile Manufacturer >4ᵗʰ Strongest Stock Market. Pehle Tolo, Phir Bolo." Trump's move to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Indian imports, along with a penalty linked to Russian oil and defence trade, comes amid increased trade friction. The former President described Indian trade policy as "most strenuous and obnoxious." "All things not good! India will therefore be paying a tariff of 25 per cent, plus a penalty for the above, starting on August first," Trump posted on social media. India's crude oil imports from Russia have risen significantly since the start of the Ukraine war. Before the war, Russian crude accounted for just 0.2 per cent of India's oil purchases. That figure has since surged to between 35 and 40 per cent, making Russia India's top oil supplier.

Over 70 per cent of teachers use AI tools in classrooms: Survey

BENGALURU: As the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks its fifth anniversary, a new nationwide survey by the Centre for Teacher Accreditation (CENTA) has found that more than 70% of Indian teachers are already using AI tools in classrooms, with lesson planning identified as the most common application. The survey, which covered over 5,000 educators from across India, revealed that AI adoption is especially high among teachers with more than three years of experience. Nearly 75% cases are reportedly active. While 67% of teachers rated their AI expertise at 6 or higher on a 10-point scale, only 57% could correctly identify a basic AI misconception, highlighting a gap between perceived and actual understanding. The findings underscore the need for structured training programmes. 'AI is rapidly becoming part of the modern classroom, but there remains a clear gap between adoption and genuine comfort among teachers,' said Ramya Venkataraman, founder and CEO of CENTA. The survey also captured concerns about AI from a wider group, including parents and students. About 84% of respondents voiced apprehensions—23% about AI's accuracy and 34% about job displacement in education. Participants came from diverse backgrounds—teachers, school leaders, parents, and students—representing schools across different fee segments and regions, from no-fee government schools to high-fee private institutions.
