AIIMS-R VRDL gets 1st NABL accreditation for diagnosis of 12 major viral infections
The laboratory, which functions under the Department of Microbiology, was accredited for the diagnosis of 12 major viral infections. These include viral meningitis and encephalitis, COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), swine flu (H1N1), influenza B, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and 14 high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) types that cause cervical cancer. The list also includes Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Hepatitis B and C viral load, and dengue.
Established in 2018, the VRDL provides diagnostic services to patients at AIIMS Raipur and receives samples from across Chhattisgarh. It is involved in testing for COVID-19, Hepatitis A, B, C, E, and dengue. The lab also assists in investigating outbreaks of viral diseases like chickenpox, conjunctivitis, and mumps.
The VRDL is the state nodal centre for COVID-19 testing, quality control, and whole genome sequencing of SARS-CoV-2.
Lt Gen Ashok Jindal (Retd), Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Raipur, congratulated the team for their achievement, stating that the NABL accreditation is a step towards national recognition for the diagnostic services provided to the people of Chhattisgarh.
Prof Dr Anudita Bhargava, who heads the Department of Microbiology, said the recognition was the result of teamwork and dedication by the entire staff. Prof. Dr Sanjay Singh Negi stated that the accreditation, which follows the ISO 15189:2022 standards, reflects the high quality of the diagnostic testing.

Covid-era teleconferences back as hosps struggle with viral load
Kolkata: Several hospitals have gone back to the Covid-time practice of teleconferencing for patient consultations while others have revived their home-care services and reactivated fever clinics to handle the spike in patient load that has continued since early July. "This has helped ease the bed crunch to some extent, reducing demand by 10%-12%. At Charnock Hospital, teleconsultations are "an integral part of services now". "Home care, on the other hand, offers a seamless continuation of professional care outside the hospital, and we are actively counselling suitable inpatients to opt for this service. Currently, we are running at 70% occupancy and have scope to admit more," said Rupali Basu, group CEO, Charnock Hospital. Desun Hospital has set up a 'neighbourhood connect team' or 'on-site fever clinic' to reach out to patients in the vicinity. "We are actively taking doctors to nearby complexes and residential areas in the evenings and weekends," said Sajal Dutta, chairman & MD, Desun Hospital. Manipal Hospitals, running at 85% of its capacity at present, has revived teleconsultation and home care services too. At RN Tagore Hospital (RTIICS), video consultations are being offered to patients, including senior citizens, to ensure they get preferential services without having to get admitted or visit the OPD. "Occupancy is 85% but our operational processes are beefed up to ensure faster discharges and admissions with no waiting period," said R Venkatesh, COO (East) of Narayana Hospitals. Woodlands Hospital, running at full occupancy, is counselling select admitted patients about continuing treatment at home under the care of a competent home-care team. "This helps us optimise bed availability for those who need hospitalisation the most. Fever patients are being thoroughly assessed, and admissions are being recommended only when clinically essential," said Rupak Barua, managing director & CEO.

Man completes 21-km Thane Marathon, collapses and dies after returning home
Thane, Aug 10 (PTI) A man collapsed and died after returning home on Sunday from the Thane Marathon, in which he completed the 21-kilometre segment, his kin and friends said. They identified the deceased as Bene Devasi, a resident of Vasant Vihar here. His friends and kin said Devasi, a fitness enthusiast and regular marathon participant, returned home and collapsed, after which he was rushed to a nearby hospital were doctors declared him dead on arrival. The exact cause of death is not known as yet, they told reporters.
