CM SHRI Schools to admit students to Classes 6-8 via merit test, says DoE
These schools, selected from the existing pool of Delhi government institutions, have been notified as a 'specified category' under the Right to Education Act, 2009, making them eligible to conduct a separate admission process. According to DoE officials, the entrance test will carry 100 multiple-choice questions worth one mark each, to be completed in 150 minutes.
The CM SHRI (Schools of Honesty, Responsibility and Innovation) initiative was announced in the 2025-26 Delhi budget with an initial allocation of ₹100 crore to upgrade 60 government schools. The list was later expanded to include 75 schools, with education minister Ashish Sood confirming the number in May.
Chief minister Rekha Gupta, in June, said these schools would feature state-of-the-art infrastructure and focus on experiential learning models.
'These schools are designed to nurture talent with modern infrastructure and teaching methods aligned with the National Education Policy,' a DoE official said.
The test will be open to Delhi residents currently enrolled in classes 6, 7 or 8 in any recognised school. At least 50% of the seats have been reserved for students from government and aided schools, including those run by the DoE, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.
Students from SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), and CWSN categories will receive a 5% concession in qualifying marks.
The OMR-based exam will be bilingual and test students on Hindi, English, general awareness, mental ability and numerical aptitude. There will be no negative marking. The syllabus and sample OMR sheets have been uploaded to the DoE website for reference.
The application window will remain open till August 15. Admit cards will be issued on August 23, and results are expected on September 10. Admissions must be completed by September 15, the notification said.
Of the 1,060 schools currently run by the Delhi government, the 75 selected for CM SHRI status were shortlisted based on readiness for infrastructure and technology upgrades. Applications for the merit test can be submitted online through the DoE website.

SC extends interim relief to Madrasas facing derecognition over RTE compliance
New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) The Supreme Court today extended interim protection to madrasas whose recognition was withdrawn following directions from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) for alleged non-compliance with the Right to Education Act, 2009. The court was hearing a plea filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind challenging the Commission's directives. A bench comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh stated that the interim protection already granted would continue and suggested that the petitioner could approach the concerned High Court for further relief. "We will extend the protection and allow you to approach the High Court," the bench observed, while clarifying that the Court was not entering into the merits of the case at this stage. Senior Advocate Indira Jaising, representing the petitioner, contended that the issue involved broader questions of law and deserved an in-depth hearing. She noted that a prior order by a three-judge bench had stayed similar directions and urged the Court to keep the matter under its consideration. She also requested additional time to decide on whether to move the High Court. Justice Sundresh remarked, 'What is there to file when we are not examining the merits right now?' Counsel for the State of Uttarakhand, Advocate Siddharth Sangal, reiterated that the apex court had already signalled that such issues could be adjudicated at the High Court level. Taking note of the submissions, the Court recorded, 'We put it to the senior counsel for the petitioner that an approach can be made to the High Court with sufficient interim protection. Let her take instructions. List after three weeks.' Earlier, on October 21, 2024, a three-judge bench led by then Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, had granted a stay on letters issued by the NCPCR in June 2024. These letters directed the Centre and state governments including Uttar Pradesh and Tripura, to withdraw recognition from madrasas allegedly violating the RTE Act. The Court also stayed subsequent communications from the Ministry of Education and state authorities, ruling that these directions 'shall not be acted upon.' The petitioner was permitted to implead all States and Union Territories and make necessary amendments within a week, with liberty to serve notices to their respective standing counsel. Govt to build 835 schools in gram panchayat HQs
1 2 Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi announced construction of 835 schools across Odisha after reviewing the ambitious Godabarish Mishra Model Primary School programme at Lok Seva Bhavan here on Monday. Each school, proposed to be set up at the headquarters of every gram panchayat, will serve as a feeder to the nearby higher secondary schools and will be built at an estimated cost of up to Rs 7 crore. The initiative aimed to strengthen foundational education and align with the objectives of National Education Policy (NEP)-2020. "These schools will provide national-level quality education tailored to the socio-economic and geographical needs of local communities. Special emphasis will be laid on ensuring ease of access for children from remote and tribal areas through free transportation," said Majhi during the review meeting. The schools to be selected under this programme must have more than 100 students, over two acres of available land, and classes ranging from pre-primary to Class VIII. Creativity, critical thinking, and experiential learning will be key components, an official statement said. Majhi also directed officials to adopt a more efficient teacher recruitment process and encouraged community involvement through active participation of parents, alumni, and local stakeholders. "Achieving foundational literacy and numeracy by Class III will be a top priority," he said, adding that efforts will be made to ensure every child receives quality education irrespective of location or background. Unaided school syllabus will be unified: Sivankutty
The syllabus of unaided schools in Kerala will be unified from next academic year, General Education V Sivankutty said in Malappuram on Monday. Commercialisation of education centered around unaided schools would not be allowed and that is the firm stance of the government, he said. 'From next year, the syllabus in unaided schools will be unified. They will not be allowed to teach their own syllabus,' he said. Mr. Sivankutty said collecting donations for first grade admission is against the norms of the National Education Policy and that unaided school managements should pay fair salaries to teachers.
