Cycling fever rolls on after Tour of Pembrokeshire success
Countdown begins to British and Welsh Cycling Championships in Ceredigion
FRESH from the success of the JCP Solicitors Tour of Pembrokeshire last weekend, Wales is gearing up for even more two-wheeled action — this time in Ceredigion, where the British and Welsh Cycling Championships are set to take place next month.
On Saturday (May 24), more than 1,600 riders from across Wales and beyond took part in the Tour of Pembrokeshire, despite wet and misty conditions. Setting off from Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi in St David's, cyclists tackled some of the most scenic — and challenging — roads the county has to offer.
The popular charity sportive featured three routes to suit all abilities: the gruelling Epic 105-mile ride with over 10,000 feet of climbing; the Classic 60-mile route; and a Community 25-mile route for newer cyclists. Riders navigated the Preseli Hills, coastal roads, and narrow country lanes in an event that has become one of the highlights of the Welsh sporting calendar.
Now, the spotlight shifts north as the British and Welsh Cycling Championships come to Ceredigion from 26 to 29 June.
To mark the one-month countdown, Ceredigion's Cabinet Member for Highways and Environmental Services, Councillor Shelley Childs, has been out promoting the region's cycling appeal — and encouraging others to enjoy the stunning local routes.
A lifelong cyclist and former competitor with Ystwyth Cycling Club, Cllr Childs holds a first category racing licence and has represented Great Britain in the World and European Duathlon Championships, finishing fifth in his age group. He credits Ceredigion's landscape with providing the perfect training ground.
'Ceredigion has so many fantastic cycling opportunities,' he said. 'No wonder it was chosen as the home of the British Cycling Championships this June. The views are magnificent and the terrain is both beautiful and testing. It's no surprise this county has produced elite riders like Josh Tarling, Stevie Williams, and Gruff Lewis.'
Cllr Childs, who also co-organises AberCycleFest and is a life member of his local cycling club, said he's excited to welcome cyclists and supporters to Aberaeron and Aberystwyth for the championships.
'There'll be something for everyone — whether you're a racing fan, a leisure rider, or just looking for a great day out,' he added.

Who is Lois Boisson? World No.361 who has reached French Open semi-finals
Lois Boisson continued her fairytale run at Roland-Garros on Wednesday with the French world No.361 now just one win away from the 2025 final. The 22-year-old stunned Mirra Andreeva 7-6 6-3 in last eight to become the first player in the Open Era to reach the semi-finals of the French Open women's singles event as a wildcard. Little was known about Boisson before this year's Grand Slam in Paris – but after knocking out three seeded stars – she's attracting plenty of attention. Ahead of Boisson's semi-final showdown against American second-seed Coco Gauff, here's everything you need to know about the Frenchwoman… Boisson made her WTA Tour debut at the Lyon Open in 2021, playing as a wildcard in the doubles tournament alongside Juline Fayard. The following year, Boisson landed her first singles title on the ITF Circuit in Dijon. After a second ITF title in 2023 in Le Havre, Boisson hit serious form in March 2024 by landing three ITF titles in the space of just one month. That saw Boisson jump up a level to play on the WTA Challenger Tour and she landed a clay-court title at the Open de Saint-Malo in May 2024. Boisson was set to receive a wildcard for her major main draw debut at the 2024 French Open – but injured her left knee – tearing her ACL just a week before the event. It meant Boisson had to wait until the 2025 French Open – where she has now made an incredible and historic run to the semi-finals in Paris. First round – 24th-seed Elise Mertens – 24th-seed Elise Mertens Second round – Anhelina Kalinina – Anhelina Kalinina Third round – Elsa Jacquemot – Elsa Jacquemot Fourth round – Third-seed Jessica Pegula – Third-seed Jessica Pegula Quarter-final – Sixth-seed Mirra Andreeva Boisson is set for the biggest ranking jump from a Grand Slam run since British star Emma Raducanu won the 2021 US Open as a qualifier. She was the world No.361 heading into Roland-Garros – but has now earned a huge 780 points for reaching the last four – with a projected new career-high ranking of world No.65. Analysis from Metro's dedicated tennis reporter Liam Grace… At the age of just 22, Boisson is already a very impressive technical player, which is way she's so well suited to the clay surface. She can generate lots of spin on her forehand shots which has caused her opponents all kinds of problems. Her movement is unbelievably good and her sliced backhand also makes her a huge threat. She's able to hit aces, too. Tennis experts have been left blown away by Boisson's performances at this year's French Open. 'She has the whole game,' Mats Wilander told TNT Sports. 'So you wonder whether it's just injury that's kept her out of it or if it's a mental thing. 'For me, she's a top-20 player on any surface with that kind of game.' More Trending Former British No.1 Tim Henman added: 'It's been an incredible story this fortnight. 'ACL injury last year, out of the equation and the game for nine months. The way she's come through and backed up the [Jessica] Pegula victory. 'I thought emotionally and technically she wasn't going to get close to winning this match [against Andreeva], but she was just incredible. 'The way that she competed, three sets, over two hours. It was a phenomenal effort, mentally and physically.' UFC star Tom Aspinall makes bold claim about future amid Jon Jones fight delay
The Brit has seemingly given up on a fight with the undisputed heavyweight champion and is now hoping to stay active inside the cage this year Tom Aspinall has his sights set on a busy end to the year and has expressed his frustration over the delay in securing a fight with Jon Jones. The interim heavyweight champion has been out of action since his win over Curtis Blaydes last July and is eager to get back in the octagon. Despite a challenging year waiting for Jones - who secured the undisputed title by submitting Ciryl Gane in 2023 and defended it against Stipe Miocic last November - Aspinall is ready to move on. Jones has teased staying on for another fight, but Aspinall suspects he's hung up his gloves and is eyeing other opportunities. The Wigan warrior told TNT Sports: "I'm sick of talking about myself, I mean, I think it's pretty clear to see that Jon Jones has retired, he doesn't want to fight me. We wish Jon all the best in the future, of course, but we want this heavyweight division active. "We want to give these contenders a chance to fight, we wanna have a defending champion, don't we? Why is this division so stagnant all the time? Let's make the heavyweight division great again and have an active defending UFC heavyweight champion, let's move on. I'm ready to fight, I wanna get two fights in before the end of the year so that's what we're doing. We finally have some movement, Jones has had a great career, I respect him, we know what he's done... Have a good life, we move on." It seems as if Aspinall has fully moved on after stating that 'Bones' is retired. Earlier this week, when asked about the agreement by UFC legends Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen on the Good Guy / Bad Guy podcast, the Brit said: "Nah man, Jon is retired. What are you talking about guys? "You guys don't follow Jon on social media? Me too [I don't follow him]. But the guy is living his best life. He's had a fantastic career, we all know. We know Jon's a religious man, so I want to say God bless him moving forward in what he does in his life and his career. "We move on. I'm the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I'm ready to take on all comers, get this division moving again. Us guys have been waiting around too long, the contenders are getting sick of it, everybody is getting sick of it, even the fans are getting sick of this stuff. So Jon's retired and it's time that we move on." If Aspinall has in fact moved on, the UFC faces a challenging task in finding a suitable opponent for the British fighter. The most logical match-up for Aspinall at this point would be Gane - who narrowly won his last fight against Alexander Volkov in December via a split decision.
