Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur Reaches 50 POEM Cases, Leading the Way in Minimally Invasive, Incisionless Treatment
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, May 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) proudly celebrates a major milestone in its endoscopic journey, having successfully performed 50 Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) procedures since the service was introduced in 2020. This achievement highlights the hospital's growing leadership in advanced, minimally invasive gastrointestinal treatments.
The POEM procedures are led by Dr. Lau Peng Choong, Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgeon at PHKL. POEM is a cutting-edge, incisionless procedure used to treat achalasia, a rare disorder that affects the ability of the oesophagus to move food into the stomach.
'We're proud to reach this milestone of 50 POEM cases,' said Dr. Lau. 'This treatment has significantly improved the quality of life for patients with achalasia—a condition that's often misdiagnosed as acid reflux or anxiety. With POEM, we can now offer an effective, minimally invasive solution with quicker recovery and less discomfort.'
Unlike traditional or even laparoscopic surgeries, POEM is performed entirely using an endoscope passed through the mouth. The technique involves cutting the muscles at the lower end of the oesophagus to allow smoother passage of food, offering faster recovery times, less pain, and lower complication risks.
Expanding the Scope of Endoscopic Expertise
In addition to POEM, Dr. Lau Peng Choong, Consultant Upper GI Surgeon, and Dr. Gew Lai Teck, Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, have successfully performed Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) for close to 20 patients with Stage 1 gastrointestinal cancers, eliminating the need for minimally invasive or open surgery. ESD is a highly precise procedure that allows for the removal of complex growths—such as early cancers or large polyps—from the gastrointestinal tract without external incisions.
Both specialists are extensively trained in advanced endoscopic interventions, and their expertise is supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team, ensuring that patients receive seamless, collaborative, and comprehensive care.
'With the recent introduction of Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), we're further broadening our scope of minimally invasive treatment options,' shared Dr. Lau. 'From cancer treatment to obesity management and digestive disorders, we're committed to helping patients heal faster, feel better, and return to daily life sooner.'
PHKL is now offering ESG procedures at an introductory rate of RM25,000, making it an accessible solution for patients considering effective weight management treatments. The procedure is performed by Dr Lau Peng Choong, Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon, and Dr Gew Lai Teck, Consultant Gastroenterologist—both trained and experienced in advanced endoscopic techniques.

Zayn Rayyan not neglected or abused, child psychologist tells court

Dr Noor Aishah Rosli, 49, the founder of the CPC International psychology clinic in Bandar Baru Bangi, confirmed that she had reviewed the reports provided by the defence. 04 Aug 2025 09:46pm Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin's mother, Ismanira Abdul Manaf appeared at the Sessions Court today. - Bernama photo PETALING JAYA - A child psychologist testified in the Sessions Court today that the late Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin had not been neglected or abused, as indicated by three medical reports from Selayang Hospital and Sungai Buloh Hospital. Dr Noor Aishah Rosli, 49, the founder of the CPC International psychology clinic in Bandar Baru Bangi, confirmed that she had reviewed the reports provided by the defence. When questioned by lawyer Haresh Mahadevan, Dr Noor Aishah said there was no evidence in the reports suggesting that Zayn Rayyan had suffered neglect or abuse. "The reports show no indication of neglect or abuse," the fifth defence witness said during examination-in-chief in the proceedings of Ismanira Abdul Manaf, who faces charges of child neglect involving Zayn Rayyan. Dr Noor Aishah elaborated on the definition of neglect, explaining that the American Psychiatric Association (APA) outlines various forms, including emotional, physical, and educational neglect. She emphasised that neglect must occur over a consistent period to be classified as such. "If a child misses lunch because the guardian is sick, it wouldn't be considered neglect. "But if the child consistently receives inadequate food and is expected to find food themselves, this could be classified as neglect,' she said. In relation to the amended charge against Ismanira, which refers to neglect causing potential physical injury to the child, Dr Noor Aishah pointed out that the use of the word "likely" in the charge implies uncertainty and does not definitively point to physical injury. When questioned whether the amended charge clearly indicated neglect by the accused, the witness responded that it was not specified in the charge. On July 21, Judge Syahliza Warnoh ordered Ismanira to enter her defence after the prosecution successfully established a prima facie case against the woman, while her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, 30, was acquitted and discharged. The couple was accused of neglecting their autistic son, Zayn Rayyan, in a manner likely to cause physical injury between noon on Dec 5 and 9.55 pm on Dec 6, 2023, in the vicinity of Block R, Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai, extending to a nearby river. They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction. The trial continues tomorrow. - BERNAMA More Like This

Child psychologist clears Zayn Rayyan's parents of neglect claims

PETALING JAYA: A child psychologist testified in court that the late Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin had not been neglected or abused, countering allegations against his parents. Dr Noor Aishah Rosli, founder of CPC International psychology clinic, reviewed medical reports from Selayang and Sungai Buloh Hospitals, finding no evidence of mistreatment. 'The reports show no indication of neglect or abuse,' Dr Noor Aishah stated during the trial of Ismanira Abdul Manaf, who faces child neglect charges. The psychologist clarified that neglect must be consistent over time to be classified as such, citing guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association (APA). She explained that occasional lapses, such as a missed meal due to a guardian's illness, do not constitute neglect. However, prolonged deprivation—such as a child consistently being left to find their own food—could qualify. Regarding the amended charge against Ismanira, Dr Noor Aishah noted the wording 'likely' introduces uncertainty, as it does not definitively prove physical injury occurred. When asked if the charge clearly indicated neglect, she replied that it lacked specificity. Judge Syahliza Warnoh had earlier ordered Ismanira to enter her defence after the prosecution established a prima facie case, while her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, was acquitted. The couple had been accused of neglecting their autistic son between December 5 and 6, 2023, at Idaman Apartment in Damansara Damai. Charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, they faced up to 20 years' imprisonment or a RM50,000 fine if convicted. The trial resumes tomorrow. - Bernama
