Owner of Glasgow Albert Drive collapsed building speaks out
Pete Macdonald has given the stark warning after being "absolutely gutted" when the fire-damaged building crumbled just weeks away from being "saved". His home in Pollokshields was at the centre of a 999 response at the weekend after a derelict tenement at the corner of Albert Drive collapsed. Several residents living near the building were evacuated while fire crews worked to secure the area. There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident. He owned one of the flats in the building and had lived there for five years before an accidental fire started on the roof on April Fool's Day in 2020. "The hope initially was that we were going to be able to restore the building, but essentially the damage was done to its roof," Pete explained. The collapsed building on the corner of Kenmure Street and Albert Drive pictured on Saturday, July 12 (Image: Newsquest/Robert Perry) READ MORE: Residents evacuated after Glasgow building collapses The 40-year-old musician has spent the past five and a quarter years trying to cope with the aftermath of the fire, as he and the other residents have been dealing with various levels of insurance, and fire and water-damaged homes. Pete had a very comprehensive insurance policy, which allowed him to be covered for a good deal more than some of his neighbours. He said the costs associated with the repair works escalated from an initial estimate of £1.5million to £4million. Pete said: "It would have cost three or more times what the properties were actually worth themselves. So essentially, being able to reinstate the building ourselves with insurance, that possibility basically ended there." This left them all in uncharted waters, as they couldn't repair their building, and Pete, unintentionally, became the de facto leader of the now-ex-neighbours. They tried to explore the route of selling the building as a development opportunity; however, this didn't provide a solution. Pete said: "Private developers were not really interested, given the listed status of the building. "And the amount of money that would cost, the profit margins were probably zero at that point for them, when it came to reinstating it, it's a conservation area as well." He explained: "The bottom line really was this building was disintegrating and it was getting worse." He appreciates the feeling that some locals had that the building was 'neglected' and that 'nothing was happening with the site', as it appeared that way from the outside. However, Pete was working away feverishly in the background to try and secure a viable solution for it and had almost secured a future for the site before the building collapsed. Pete said they were so close to signing it over, he said: "We were within probably two weeks of this being completed. "So the building falling down was absolutely gutting. It was like a kick in the teeth after all of this. "It's like a horrific game of pass the parcel, unfortunately, because we are still, officially, the owners. "At the moment we are, you know, looking at up 10s and 10s of thousands of pounds at least each. "That two weeks in the scope of five and a quarter years is such a tiny amount of time, having gone from pretty much elation, I was able to relax for the first time in five and a quarter years, and then just to be kind of hit with this has been tough." Dr Zubir Ahmed MP for Glasgow South West (Image: Supplied) READ MORE: 'Looking good': Popular Glasgow pub reopens after making 'exciting changes' MP for Glasgow South West, Dr Zubir Ahmed, has been supporting Pete and his neighbours since last year, he said: "I think we can't underestimate the toll this has taken on Pete personally as well as all the tenants, completely no fault of their own. This was, you know, a kind of random act of a fire. "It literally could have happened to any of us." Zubir is taking part in a meeting tomorrow to try and find a solution, which he says needs to be swift: "Some pragmatism and some discretion will need to be applied with the Council, the Housing association, perhaps third agencies to get to a complete resolution on this. And I think it needs to happen quickly." He has also expressed concerns over others being caught in insurance 'grey areas' and says that work needs to be done to establish 'the best insurance mechanism should be for tenement buildings'. It's frustrating that a second tenement building has now collapsed at Albert Cross after 5 years of limbo, despite being listed and in the East Pollokshields Conservation Area. A lack of insurance and insufficient state support to facilitate repairs. We need a new Tenement Act. — Paul Sweeney (@PaulJSweeney) July 12, 2025 This call for a review of the insurance of Glasgow's Tenements was echoed by MSP Paul Sweeney, who said on social media: 'It's frustrating that a second tenement building has now collapsed at Albert Cross after five years of limbo, despite being listed and in the East Pollokshields Conservation Area. 'A lack of insurance and insufficient state support to facilitate repairs. We need a new Tenement Act.' Pete added that they all "just wanted to move on with our lives," and hopes a solution can be found. Southside Housing Association did not comment on the situation.

Hit musical about Celtic FC is coming back to Glasgow
'My dad saw this show at the Armadillo and loved it,' says the Castlemilk-born actor. 'He sadly died in May, so when I saw the auditions come up, I thought I'd try for a part and do it in his memory. I'm doing it for him.' Stephen is starring in Celtic The Musical, a reimagined version of the hit show which has been delighting audiences in Glasgow and on tour for almost a decade. The new cast of Celtic The Musical (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) It is coming to the Pavilion in September, and the Glasgow Times was given exclusive access to the new cast as they met for the first time at Celtic Park in the East End. Celtic The Musical follows the life and times of the Quinn family, as they support their beloved club through the generations, from its founding by Brother Walfrid in 1888 through the heady days of Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions, to Brendan Rodgers' present-day squad. Songs include fan favourites Hail Hail, Over and Over and the spine-tingling You'll Never Walk Alone. Stephen, who is known for his work on a string of TV series and films including Rise of the Footsoldier: Vengeance, Vigil and Mayflies, is making his Celtic The Musical debut. 'It's exciting – hopefully we're bringing something new and fresh to the show, a different dynamic,' he says. Julie Duncanson and Stephen McCole (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) 'It's a show really about how this club has been an anchor for families to share experiences, to cry together a bit, to support each other.' He grins: 'And I'm sure if my dad is watching somewhere, he'll be laughing his a**e off at me. If the lights start to go a bit funny in the middle of it, I'll know he's there …' (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) Elysia Welch is also new to the production. The Southside-based actor, who plays Rosie, is delighted to be joining the show. 'I'm a Celtic fan, so I'm really excited,' she says, smiling. 'Rosie is sassy, she knows a lot about Celtic and she and her brother are constantly back and forth at each other, so it's a bit like me and my siblings. 'I can't wait.' Former River City star Julie Duncanson is reprising her role as Quinn family matriarch Mary. 'The audience makes the show – they bring all their love and enthusiasm and it's great to be part of that,' says Julie, who is from North Glasgow. (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) Gary: Tank Commander star James Rottger is also returning to the production. 'This will make it four-in-row,' he says, wryly. 'Just like Celtic has just done. I feel like my character, Tommy, has aged with me along the way. 'It's a great show, always changing and staying fresh.' (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) Keith Warwick, who is a veteran of the production, having performed in it twice at the Pavilion, and at the Armadillo and on tour, agrees the show 'has to evolve' with each run. 'You want to keep it up to date and fresh, because the story of Celtic keeps going,' says the Govan-born actor. 'The main theme though does not change – it's about family, it's about refugees being made welcome in Glasgow because that's the roots of this club, and it's about the highs and lows of life.' Keith, who is well-known for a string of TV and stage roles including My Parents Are Aliens and The Bill, is a dyed-in-the-wool Celtic fan, so he is delighted to be talking about this in the home of his favourite club. He is also well aware of how much the story means to the fans. 'If I can just name-drop for a moment,' he says, mock-apologetically, 'Brendan Rodgers spoke to me at the last run and asked me if I got nervous waiting in the wings, because the atmosphere at this show is so raucous. 'I told him as a fan, I was over the moon, and so excited, but as a professional, you have to control yourself.' He adds, smiling: 'If you don't rein it in, the audience will take over and you'll just be singing songs all night. And people have got buses to catch.' Celtic The Musical will be at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow from September 4 to 27.

Hollyoaks legend's friends on show 'stopped talking to her' after she was axed
Former Hollyoaks star Stephanie Waring has revealed a number of her co-stars cut contact following her departure. Steph, 47, appeared in the Channel 4 soap intermittently for almost three decades between 1996 and 2024. The actress part of a mass cast exodus ahead of a huge revamp in September, which saw a reduction of episodes and a game-changing time jump. Cindy and her little brother Tom (Ellis Hollins) made a quick escape after learning the truth behind Dave Williams' (Dominic Power) identity. As the notorious gangster 'Blue', he plagued Warren Fox's (Jamie Lomas) life for weeks over the summer, kidnapping his children and forcing him to confess to the murder of his mother. After Dave pulled a gun on the siblings, Cindy whacked her husband over the head with a stapler before they both fled. Desperate to depart before she found herself in more danger, she resolved to stay with older sister Jude in Spain – with Tom agreeing that it would be best for him to move on too. Now, almost a year on, she has told the Secure The Insecure podcast that she misses her friendships with her fellow 'Oaks actors. 'I did feel the quiet from the family that I once knew on the show,' she admitted. 'No one's picking up the phone. No one's checking in. Everyone's just getting on with their life.' She continued: 'When you're in that Hollyoaks bubble and they call it a family – I feel you're only family when you're in it. 'You pour your heart out to these people, and then you go, and it's like it never happened. 'Where did that friendship go? There's only a couple of people I'm in contact with.' In April, she addressed her 'vulnerability' upon starting a new venture away from the acting industry, working as a life coach. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? 'That's all I've known for the last 30 years. When I lost my job last year, I knew that I would be in a place of vulnerability, because it wasn't guaranteed that I was just going to get another role, and you know, go onto the next project, it's really hard out there, it's not easy,' she said on Instagram. More Trending 'That's one of the reasons why I stayed in Hollyoaks for so long because it was security and I was doing what I loved every single day. 'I didn't even question it, so when I became vulnerable, I thought well what else can I do that would give me a purpose, and something that I was passionate about.
