‘Donkey Kong Bananza' Review: Have A Banana

Forbes17 hours ago
This is easily one of the best platformers of recent years.
The latest entry in the Donkey Kong series is a banana-fuelled blast, and may be one of the best platforming games in recent years.
The main setup of the game has you control the titular Donkey Kong as he tackles the evil Void Company while venturing to the core of the planet to make things right.
Developed by the team behind Super Mario Odyssey, Donkey Kong Bananza has a lot of functional and structural carry-overs from that game.
Each new level, as you venture deeper into the planet, has distinct biomes and is effectively a mini-open-world layout.
Now, in Super Mario Odyssey, you collected coins and moons to progress, whereas in Donkey Kong Bananza, it's more open-ended with additional currencies to choose from.
The skill upgrades are as numerous as they are helpful.
The currencies are also more functional here and are spread out over different areas of gameplay. The gold you mine goes into buying items, whereas fossils give you different clothes (which also afford differing attributes).
The 'moons' in this instance are massive Banandium Gems, and these are used to upgrade a large and varied skill tree.
This is because this game is as much about exploration as it is about destruction. The last game that nailed this kind of setup was the original Dragon Quest Builders, which still holds a fond place in my heart to this day.

Anyway, destroying an area in a fit of monkey rage is deeply satisfying and also gives you the currency for all the aforementioned upgrades.
You also have fun challenges dotted around each area and tasks you have to complete in order to thwart the evil Void Company.
Even as you tunnel underground, the camera keeps up fine.
Boss fights are also ingenious and again help you satiate your banana-induced monkey rage.
The game is also entirely massive and has a huge amount of replay value, as you go back and search for items and more Banandium Gems, so you definitely get your money's worth on this one.
There's also a great musical component to the game, as Donkey Kong and Pauline sing songs, which makes for a lovely and characterful experience.
As this is a new Switch 2 game, it does look lovely and runs very smoothly considering all the deformable terrain at work here. Controls are also very fluid, and the camera handles all the crazy bespoke tunnelling you do pretty well.
Overall, Donkey Kong Bananza does what Super Mario Odyssey did before it: offer one of the best platforming games available on a new system. The fact that the bulk of the game is about wanton joyous destruction is also another big bonus. So, if you want to tunnel to the center of the planet and destroy most of it along the way, Donkey Kong Bananza is your kind of platformer.

How to solve today's Wordle. Looking for Wednesday's Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here: How To Solve Today's Wordle Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and I handed out an extra riddle for you fine Wordlers to solve prior to tackling the daily Wordle. Today, I'll give you the answer. This was the riddle: FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder This is a very clever little riddle. The name is hidden in plain sight, beginning in July, moving on through August and then September, October and November. If you take the first letter of each of those months you spell out J-A-S-O-N, or Jason. Voila! Alright, now that's out of the way let's solve this Wordle! Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer: Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post. Today's Wordle Hints And Answer Wordle Bot's Starting Word: SLATE My Starting Word Today: SNARE — 31 words remaining The Hint: Shake the very ground. The Clue: This Wordle has more vowels than consonants. Okay, spoilers below! The answer is coming! . . . Today's Wordle Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here. SNARE was a pretty good opening guess, leaving me with just 31 words and two green boxes. I had almost gone with FLAKE for my opener, and went with FLICK for my second guess, since I assumed we probably didn't need more vowels (I was wrong) and wanted to try all new letters. This slashed my remaining choices down to just two: AWAKE or QUAKE were all I could think of, and I never guess a double letter if I can help it. I went with QUAKE and that was the Wordle. Huzzah! Today's Wordle Bot The Bot and I each get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying. Our July totals inch up to: Erik: 8 points Wordle Bot: 12 points The word "quake" comes from Old English cwacian, meaning to tremble or shake. It is of Germanic origin, related to Middle Dutch quacken and Middle Low German quaken, all meaning to shake or tremble. The word originally referred to trembling from fear or cold, and later came to describe earth tremors (as in earthquake). You Can Now Pre-Order A Switch 2 Bundle With ‘Pokémon Legends: Z-A'

Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Nintendo's Switch 2 console launched last month in two distinct purchasing configurations: One was a vanilla base package, priced at $449.99, which only contained the device itself and no extras. The second option was a bundle that contained the Switch 2, plus a digital copy of Mario Kart World. I'm sure the base offering will stick around for the foreseeable future, but it seems there's already another unique bundle on the horizon, perhaps deploying to replace the current Mario Kart World variant. Nintendo has announced that you can now pre-order a brand new first-party Starter (apropos, given the pack-in software here) kit: A shiny Switch 2 with a fresh copy of the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A - Switch 2 Edition. The bundle is priced at $499.99, just like the MKW version, and is due to release alongside the new Pokémon game on October 16. Interestingly, Z-A is simultaneously launching on the legacy Switch, but apparently there isn't an OLED or Lite bundle arriving for either. It's not like the Switch needs any more damn sales, however. Still, I do worry about the performance of this last-gen version, given the track record of Pokémon titles on the Switch 1. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder The copy of Z-A included with this new bundle will be digital in nature, so if you're wanting a physical copy, it might be advisable to buy these products separately. That said, you're getting a discount with the bundle, seeing as Pokémon Legends: Z-A is separately priced at $69.99. You're saving $10 less than with the Mario Kart World bundle, though, which is currently going for $79.99. But it's better than nothing. From a financial perspective, I think these bundles are great, but I do wish Nintendo would make the consoles themselves more compelling. At the end of the day, you're really just buying a standard Switch 2 and saving some money on a single game. It would be cool if these systems boasted limited edition paint-jobs to match the particular game they're shipped with. Perhaps a rainbow, Earth-themed Switch 2 for Mario Kart World, or a Switch 2 with a Poké Ball aesthetic for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. We'll no doubt see special edition Switch 2 consoles down the road, though. I'd have considered pre-ordering this new bundle had I not literally snagged a Mario Kart World edition of the Switch 2 on Target's website late last night. That said, you can reserve the Pokémon edition from the My Nintendo Store and various other retailers today.

Buying a Switch 2? Here's the game we recommend you buy next

Now that the Nintendo Switch 2 is getting easier to track, chances are you probably have a console at home or have one coming your way. If that's the case, you'll want to pick up Donkey Kong Bananza as your next game. Right now, Best Buy has Donkey Kong Bananza available for $69. You can also pick up the Donkey Kong & Pauline amiibo for $29. (Still shopping for a console? Make sure to follow our Switch 2 restocks live blog for everything Switch 2 related). Donkey Kong Bananza allows DK to smash his way through (and down into) the surrounding terrain. He can punch his way through mountains or head underground in search of collectibles. It's hands-down one of the Switch 2's biggest and most fun titles. In our Donkey Kong Bananza review, we called it the Donkey Kong game fans have always wanted and then some, thanks to its fully destructible environments, incredibly fun and engaging gameplay, and beautifully unique visuals. We're also big fans of its wonderfully catchy soundtrack. Yes, Mario Kart World might have been the Nintendo Switch 2's main launch title, but Donkey Kong Bananza really feels like the first must-have game for the new console. So make sure to add this Editor's Choice game to your Switch 2 library now.
