More than two decades after it first won hearts around the world, Bend It Like Beckham is finally getting a sequel. Director Gurinder Chadha confirmed the news to the BBC over the weekend, teasing that she's currently developing a follow-up to the 2002 hit.
The film revolved around 18-year-old Jesminder 'Jess' Bhamra, who was passionate about football, something her parents did not support, and Jules Paxton, a member of the local women's amateur football team who befriends Jess and invites her to try out for the team.
Chadha announced the news in Basel on Saturday, where England's women's football team, the Lionesses, were preparing for the Euro 2025 final against world champions Spain. The timing, she said, felt just right.
'We've been part of changing the game for women, so it felt like this was a good time for me to go back and investigate the characters,' Chadha said. The film's sequel is being eyed for release in 2027, coinciding with both the 25th anniversary of the original and the Fifa Women's World Cup in Brazil.
The original Bend It Like Beckham starred Parminder Nagra and a then-rising Keira Knightley as two teenage girls determined to pursue football in the face of cultural and societal expectations.
It grossed nearly US$80mil worldwide on a modest US$4.6mil budget, becoming a defining film for women in sport — especially young British-Asian girls.
Chadha revealed she had been asked 'almost twice a week' since the original film came out to consider a sequel. 'A lot has changed since the original movie, but I think that people still don't think that women should play football,' she said. 'There are people who still don't take it seriously, although the Lionesses are riding high.'
While the exact format of the sequel is still undecided — it could be another feature film or perhaps a television series — Chadha is hopeful about bringing back the original cast.
She also hinted at possible cameos from members of the current England squad, saying she imagines they'll be 'queuing up' for a chance to be part of the story.
Chadha also spoke about the cultural impact of the first film. 'I intended to uplift girls, girls who grew up like me, who were always being told how to dress, how to look, what to say, what not to say,' she said. 'What I did was say you can do what you want, and you can have it all.'
With women's football continuing to rise in popularity and visibility, Chadha believes there's more to explore. 'I think there's still stuff to say, and stuff to challenge,' she added. – Dawn/Asia News Network

Aagha Ali thinks men should 'make a life for themselves' before getting married

Photo: Aagha Ali/Instagram At a time when women asking for the bare minimum is seen as "too much", actor Aagha Ali (pic) just laid down the requirements he thinks men need to meet before even thinking about falling for someone. In a conversation with podcast host Adnan Faisal, the actor said every woman has the right to financial stability and men need to provide that much at the very least. Responding to a question on his earlier remarks about women needing luxury more than love, Ali said women don't marry someone to sacrifice themselves at the altar, their needs must be catered to. He asked men to make something of their own life first, then think about sharing that life with someone else. Pushed further on the subject, Ali said, 'It doesn't matter if you have a bike, a cycle, a car, an SUV [or] a jet. Are you in debt? Do you keep your wife under your own roof with respect? Do you celebrate her little joys like Eid, Shab-i-Barat, her birthday, your anniversary?' Faisal tried to equate Ali's use of the term "luxury" with iPhones, to which the actor said, 'The problem is with people [mis]understanding something, I can't do anything about that…love only looks good in a secure area.' 'Clueless'-inspired hotel suite features Cher-approved closet

The interior of the Clueless suite was designed to reflex the beloved movie character's personality. — Photos: L'Ermitage Beverly Hills/TNS The costume designer behind the enduring outfits featured in 1995's Clueless has created a modern-day, Cher Horowitz-approved closet to celebrate the film's 30th anniversary. A limited-time, blush-hued Clueless suite at the L'Ermitage Beverly Hills in California, United States boasts a walk-in closet complete with a Cher-worthy wardrobe curated from Bloomingdale's by costume designer Mona May, according to the hotel. A stay in the suite – which features fun details like fuzzy pens, a Polaroid camera and Clueless -themed turn-down treats – also comes with a US$100 (RM425) gift card to spend at Bloomingdale's, a VIP in-store styling appointment, a Dior Beauty makeup session or spa session, and access to a white Jeep Wrangler convertible to cruise around Beverly Hills just like Cher. The suite has a walk-in closet complete with a Cher-worthy wardrobe curated by Mona May. Through Sept 1, the suite can be booked starting at US$1,995 (RM8,489) per night. Guests are given a free membership to Fitted, the official virtual Clueless closet app of the movie's anniversary campaign. 'It's just bright and happy as Cher would love it,' Mona May told The Hollywood Reporter of the closet she filled with designer pieces. 'The moment you walk in there you are transformed into the world of Clueless .' The room has a neon sign that reads, 'Carpe Diem, okay?', which is one of the many memorable quotes from the movie. While some of the items in the updated wardrobe might not be completely in line with Cher's aesthetic – Birkenstocks and bucket hats? As if! – other items seem to be direct nods to the film's classic costuming, including a bright red fringe frock that signals to the Alaia dress Cher wore during a hold-up in the Valley. Amy Heckerling's loose adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma stars Alicia Silverstone as fashionista 'virgin who can't drive' Cher. Stacey Dash plays her best friend Dionne, Paul Rudd is the ex-stepbrother Josh, and the late Brittany Murphy played new student Tai. Together, they try to find their footing as teens and young adults. Speaking to the Daily News in 2020, Heckerling said she was 'overwhelmed with how people are always posting different lines' from the beloved film even 25 years later. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service

Former Superman actor Dean Cain swaps cape for badge in ICE induction

Already a sworn deputy sheriff and reserve police officer, Cain says the move came after his recruitment video for ICE went viral. – AFP photo LOS ANGELES (Aug 8): Dean Cain is taking his hero act from Metropolis to the US-Mexico border. The former Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star is set to be sworn in as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, the BBC reported today — joining one of the most controversial law enforcement agencies in the United States. Cain, who played TV's Superman from 1993 to 1997, told Fox News yesterday: 'I will be sworn in as an ICE agent asap.' Already a sworn deputy sheriff and reserve police officer, he said the move came after his recruitment video for ICE went viral. 'I wasn't part of ICE, but once I put that out there and you put a little blurb on your show, it went crazy,' he explained. According to the BBC, the Department of Homeland Security will officially make him an 'honorary ICE Officer' next month. DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin hailed the signing, saying: 'Superman is encouraging Americans to become real-life superheroes by answering their country's call to join the brave men and women of ICE to help protect our communities to arrest the worst of the worst.' Cain says it's about stepping up. 'People have to step up. I'm stepping up,' he told Fox News. 'Hopefully a whole bunch of other former officers, former ICE agents will step up, and we'll meet those recruitment goals immediately and we'll help protect this country.' The BBC notes that ICE is in the middle of a massive hiring spree — looking for 10,000 more personnel to double its ranks. The roles go beyond deportation officers, with openings for attorneys, criminal investigators and student visa adjudicators. To sweeten the deal, the agency is offering up to US$50,000 (RM211,465) in bonuses and student loan help. The push is part of US President Donald Trump's pledge to increase deportations to one million a year, a promise that's brought an uptick in immigration raids — and nationwide protests from critics who call them unlawful. In true Hollywood style, the recruitment campaign comes with old-school propaganda posters. Think World War Two designs, stamped with 'America Needs You' and 'Defend the Homeland' alongside images of Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and other officials. By Wednesday, Noem told Fox News the campaign had pulled in over 80,000 applications — with ICE even scrapping the age limit to boost numbers. With Cain's induction next month, the man who once fought TV villains as Superman will be joining the real-life front line of US immigration enforcement — a role far removed from the red cape, but one that's already making headlines. – Malay Mail Dean Cain ICE agent Superman
