Cronulla ace learns fate after ugly act as Roosters make mockery of Origin backlash

Yahoo25-05-2025

A severely depleted Roosters side have made a mockery of calls to pause the NRL during the State of Origin period after thumping a full strength Cronulla 42-16 on Saturday night. The Sharks' heavy defeat was compounded by an ugly high shot from winger Ronaldo Mulitalo that saw the flyer sent to the bin. On Sunday, the NRL match review committee slapped Mulitalo with a one-game ban, with an early guilty plea.
The incident was a sour note in what was an outstanding against-the-odds triumph for the Roosters, who were missing five players to Origin duty, along with several more injured stars. The Origin situation had already led to renewed calls for the NRL to implement a standalone period for the representative game, after the ladder-leading Bulldogs were thumped by the struggling Dolphins on Thursday night.
Penrith were also missing five Origin stars and were thrashed by Newcastle in Saturday night's earlier game, to leave the four-time defending premiers rooted to the bottom of the ladder. But the Roosters flipped the script against premiership contenders Cronulla in Gosford, running in seven-tries-to-three to score an extraordinary 26-point victory.
Roosters No.7 Hugo Savala showed that the club's interest in veteran Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans may be unnecessary as he delivered the most mature display of his nine-game first-grade career. Savala scored one try and contributing three try assists with his pin-point kicking a particular highlight in the big win.
The Roosters led 14-0 in as many minutes, with left winger Daniel Tupou catching and grounding two superb Savala cross-field kicks. Both tries were converted by Savala's excellent halves partner Sandon Smith, who added a penalty and finished the night with seven goals from eight attempts.
Savala's long-term future at the Tricolours has been subject to scrutiny this season, with his agent declaring he would explore loan options if Robinson lands the signature of Cherry-Evans. But on the evidence so far this season - and with first-choice No.7 Sam Walker still not due back from injury for a month - Savala and Smith have established themselves as bona fide NRL playmakers.
"I've been really clear with my intentions, and I also don't think it's the right time to talk about that," Robinson said when asked about his club's move for Cherry-Evans. "On a night like tonight, to shift direction towards that, I don't think it's the right time - I think it's right to celebrate the team and the players."
The match was overshadowed by a brutal high shot from Mulitalo on Roosters centre Mark Nawaqanitawase that saw the Sharks winger sent to the sin bin midway through the first half. Nawaqanitawase caught and passed in quick succession, with replays showing Mulitalo making forceful contact with his shoulder to the head of the Roosters star, in an incident some fans labelled a 'dog shot' and many thought should have been a straight send-off.

The Sharks trailed 20-6 at halftime, and Savala helped extend that advantage after the break with another kick that fell kindly for Nawaqanitawase, who crashed over for his eighth try in nine games. Roosters prop Xavier Va'a made it an NRL debut to savour after crashing over for a try with just his second touch of the footy and while KL Iro and Mulitalo pulled tries back for the Sharks, Roosters skipper James Tedesco and Dom Young hit back to put the exclamation mark on a big win.

"Back down to earth with a thud," said Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon in a press conference that lasted just 80 seconds. "I don't make excuses ... we got outperformed, and it was a real attitude check for us that we're going to have to work on." The win lifts the Roosters into 11th on the ladder, while the Sharks remain fifth after missing the chance to break into the top-four.

Liverpool set to miss out on transfer target as AC Milan plots move

AC Milan is plotting a move for Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae, who Liverpool is also believed to be interested in. Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea are all said to be interested in Kim to varying degrees, but a move back to Italy could be the most attractive proposition for the 28-year-old, who enjoyed the best season of his career in 2022-23 with Napoli. Advertisement Bayern has already agreed a deal to sign center-back Jonathan Tah, who was also linked with Liverpool, from Bayer Leverkusen, freeing up Kim to leave the Bundesliga club. Speaking of Leverkusen, Liverpool is trying to sign Florian Wirtz this summer, although doubts have been raised about the 22-year-old playmaker. Milan is looking to freshen up its defense after finishing in eighth place in Serie A this season, and Kim is expected to be available for $41 million. Advertisement It's not clear just how much truth there is to the reports linking Kim with Liverpool. Considering the player turns 29 this year, it seems unlikely that the Reds would be willing to part with over $40 million to sign him, as the club tends to target players in their mid- to low-20s. Meanwhile, Liverpool is reportedly interested in 19-year-old Rennes center-back Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, as the club continues to consider its defensive options ahead of next season. While Virgil van Dijk is staying put for another two years, there is uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future ahead of the expiration of his contract next year, while Joe Gomez is coming back from hamstring surgery and Jarell Quansah has just experienced a regressive campaign. The Reds were interested in Dean Huijsen, but he plumped for Real Madrid, and a link has now emerged with another young defender in Ait Boudlal. There is also interest in Ait Boudlal from other clubs in France as well as two clubs in Spain. Advertisement The 6-foot-3 Marrakesh-born defender developed at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in his home country of Morocco, before signing his first professional contract with French club Rennes in July 2024. Ait Boudlal made six appearances for Rennes' second team, and also turned out for the Under-19s on a couple of occasions during the first half of the 2024-25 season. In February, he was sent on loan to French second tier side Amiens for the remainder of the campaign, and went on to make nine appearances, with eight of those coming as starts. Le360 Sport reports that Ait Boudlal is noted for "his ability to pass, his defensive intelligence, and a maturity rare for his age."

'Ready for war': Aussie Opetaia alert to Italian ambush

Like the 27 challengers who have come before him, Jai Opetaia is swatting away Claudio Squeo's threat to derail the Australian boxing superstar's undisputed world title dream. Opetaia (27-0, 21KOs) will place his IBF and The Ring cruiserweight belts on the line against the unbeaten Squeo (17-0, 9KOs) on Sunday. Despite entering the bout as a 15-1 underdog, the Italian is promising to prove the doubters wrong and pull off one of boxing's great boilovers at the Gold Coast Exhibition Centre. "This is a big opportunity to shock the world, the people writing you off," Squeo said through a translator on Friday. First face off done. War ready. 😤 This Sunday on @DAZNBoxing — Jai Opetaia (@jaiopetaia1) June 4, 2025 But with a multi-million-dollar pay day and a place in Australian boxing immortality also at stake, Opetaia is having none of it. With much bigger fish to fry, the 29-year-old is vowing to win whatever way is required, knowing a loss is non negotiable ahead of a succession of potential super fights that could propel him to Hall of Fame status. "I believe I can beat him in the pocket, I believe I can outbox him. We are just going to fight smart," Opetai said. "We've got to choose our battles and just wait til Sunday." The fight comes almost three years after a then-unfancied Opetaia defied two jaw fractures to beat champion Mairis Briedis and claim his two straps. Opetaia has fought five times since, with the Briedis rematch last year his only genuine challenge, and is yet to land a shot at the other three belts in his division. Badou Jack owns the WBC belt but it is WBO and WBA champion Gilberto Ramirez who is firmly in Opetaia's sights. The Mexican two-weight champion is due for a mandatory defence later this month and insistent he will face Opetaia next. Should both win, as most predict they will, Opetaia will be in line to finally secure a unification blockbuster against Ramirez later this year. An Opetaia-Ramirez mega-money four-belt stoush would sit nicely on the undercard to September's historic duel between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford in Las Vegas. Little wonder why Opetai's priority is to see off Squeo however he needs to, saying he's even ready to slug it out for 12 full rounds if that's what it takes. "Once that bell goes every time, man, it's on and I'm ready for 12 rounds of war," he said. "I've got no doubt he's going to come forward. That's got to be his game plan. "We've just got to be patient. We just stick to our game plan, do what we do and we put on clinics. "So on Sunday, I love to put on a clinic. We always do the goods, we always put on good performances. "We are some hard-noses. We've been in the trenches the last couple of weeks. I'm riding in the wave. You know how I train to stop people."
