Was detained when I went to meet residents of Bhoomiheen Camp: Atishi

The Hindu3 days ago

Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Leader of the Opposition Atishi on Tuesday said the police detained her when she went to meet residents of Bhoomiheen Camp in Kalkaji, south Delhi, which is set to be demolished on Wednesday.
Rejecting her claims, a police officer said Ms. Atishi was 'not detained' but 'removed' from the site under the Delhi Police Act's Section 65 (If someone resists, refuses, or fails to comply, the police officer can remove the person, produce them before a Metropolitan Magistrate, or release them in trivial cases).
The camp is situated on land owned by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and the DDA has issued an eviction notice to its residents.
However, there was no reaction by the DDA over the claims demolishing planned for Wednesday.
At a press conference, Ms. Atishi said, 'The DDA and Delhi Police have planned a bulldozer action tomorrow (Wednesday) at Bhoomiheen Camp. Today, the entire area was fortified by the police and the Central Reserve Police Force personnel, who began forcibly evicting the residents from their homes.'
The former Chief Minister said that the camp's residents are not encroachers, as claimed by the DDA, but have been living there for decades. 'They work in the Kalkaji area; their children study in nearby schools. If their homes are demolished, where are they supposed to go,' she asked.
Ms. Atishi alleged that she was 'assaulted' by the police. 'It is disgraceful. The Deputy Commissioner of Police of that area physically assaulted a two-time elected MLA, who is also the Leader of the Opposition and a woman who had come to hear public grievances. In a democracy, doesn't an MLA have the right to meet her constituents?' she alleged.
The AAP leader said that of the 3,024 flats built by the DDA in Kalkaji under its in situ rehabilitation programme, only 1,862 flats have been allotted to beneficiaries so far. 'Why are the remaining flats vacant,' she asked.

Voters ‘board'? Mind games on: Character takes centre stage in Ludhiana West race

Ludhiana: Can an election be so devoid of politico-economic issues that a candidate's demeanor and public conduct become the dominant electoral issue? That's the striking message emerging from Ludhiana (West), an assembly constituency braced for a fierce contest on June 19. If the large-sized posters dotting every major roundabout and road and handouts reaching voters' doorsteps are to be believed, then apart from the routine promises of speedy delivery of development and official works, other major campaign themes are "arrogance", "respect" and "quarrelsome" nature of a candidate, who, if elected, "would keep fighting with the govt." AAP slogans target Ashu's demeanor The apparent target of this campaign is Congress nominee Bharat Bhushan Ashu and propaganda tools that are carrying this message hammer and tongs belong to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominee and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, who, with numerous such billboards, has successfully dominated the propaganda landscape of the segment. "Na gussa na hankaar, kam hon ge lagataar (There will no anger and arrogance. There will continuous focus on works)" is one of the most visible slogans crafted by AAP to target Ashu and printed on almost every alternative billboard erected by AAP alongside major roads, completing its rhyme with "Aap da MLA, Aap Di sarkar (It will be AAP's MLA in AAP's government.) As if "respect" is an election issue for voters, another slogan having reference to it as "Hon ge kamm, milega satikaar, AAP da MLA AAP di sarkar (Work will be done, respect will be bestowed; it will be AAP's MLA in AAP's government)" AAP's attack on "arrogance" has attained another level in a handout circulated in some pockets of the constituency while pointing out three reasons to vote for Arora. Apart from his "affable personality" and "his ability to get work done from his own govt if he becomes MLA", the third reason was "arrogance and insulting behavior of an opponent." "Everyone knows how arrogant he was. He is folding hands because elections are around the corner. Once he wins, he will not even recognise you. Like what he did in past, he would insult others, he would pick quarrels…would irk masses and most importantly, he would keep quarreling with government for next two years. No cleanliness, drains blocked, garbage everywhere…there will be no development", reads a portion of a handout published in Punjabi and distributed on Thursday morning. On the other hand, in a press conference he addressed on Thursday along with senior Congress leader Pawan Khera, Ashu acknowledged he was being personally targeted through hoardings. When asked about allegations against AAP candidate, he responded, "I would not resort to such practices. That's not the kind of politics I do." Subtle replies on Cong billboards It's not that only Arora's hoardings are carrying such slogans. Slogans on Ashu's hoarding also suggest that they are written with tongue-in-cheek. The most prominent of them is "Na jhooth na laare, kam karda bahut saare (Neither lies nor false promises. He is the one who get lot of works done)." Although slogan is targeting Ashu's opponents, it still leaves the onlookers guessing as to whom Ashu is targeting with these words. Boxes Cong's Punjabi versus 'outsider' As Congress is pulling all stops to turn this elections into Punjabis versus Arvind Kejriwal contest, a very large sized hoarding installed at the main election office of Bharat Bhushan Ashu aptly delivers this message with the slogan, "Punjab de faisle, Punjabi lain ge ( Punjabis will take decisions about Punjab)." SAD's 'tuhada apna' Contrast to its traditional of contesting election on the religious-political-development plank, Shiromani Akali Dal's posters appearing somber and this time. Posters of advocate Parupkaar Singh Ghuman carry just one message: Tuhade vichon, tuhada apna (The one from amongst you, The one who is yours)" BJP's reserved approach Campaign posters and hoardings put up by BJP are also somber and avoid any negative sloganeering. Apart from routine promises of development and efficient work delivery, the posters also carry pictures of several national and state BJP leaders apart from the candidate Jiwan Gupta. AAP gets maximum notices for violation of model code

Ludhiana: Ahead of the West bypoll on June 19, election authorities have issued 41 notices for violations of the model code of conduct (MCC). Most of these notices have been directed at the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), officials confirmed on Wednesday. According to a senior election official, by June 12, AAP had received 24 notices, followed by Congress with nine, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) with five, and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with two. The notices were issued after verifying complaints and conducting ground-level checks. The violations primarily involved unauthorised hoardings and banners on government and private properties, public meetings without permission, and alleged corrupt practices such as voter bribery and intimidation. An official from the election office said that while 665 complaints had been received by June 12, most were found to be factually incorrect upon verification. Enforcement in Action Returning officer/additional deputy commissioner Rupinder Pal Singh said that over 10,000 posters had been removed in the past two days alone, with the cost added to the respective candidates' expenditure accounts. "All parties are equally responsible for MCC violations," he said. To monitor and enforce compliance, the administration has deployed 34 teams, including 21 Flying Squad Teams (FSTs), 9 static surveillance teams (SSTs), and 10 video surveillance teams. Each team comprises a cameraman, a police officer, and an executive officer. These teams reportedly remove around 5,000 defacement materials daily. Rapid complaint resolution Expenditure observer Indana Ashok Kumar told TOI that 17 cases of defacement had been registered in connection with the bypoll. Of the 699 complaints received via the cVigil app, most were resolved within 100 minutes. Delhi HC stays demolition of 11 properties in Batla House

ANI 14 Jun 2025, 00:22 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): The Delhi High Court granted an interim stay on Friday for the proposed demolition of 11 properties in the Batla House area of Okhla. Residents of these properties have challenged the notices issued by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The residents of properties situated at Muradi Road, Batla House, have challenged the notices issued by DDA on May 24 and 26. Single judge bench of Justice Tejas Karia on Friday granted interim stay on proposed demolition till next date. Delhi HC has issued notice to DDA and sought a response. The matter has been listed on July 10 for hearing before the roster bench. Delhi High Court agreed to stay the DDA notice of demolition in Batla House area subject to the petitioner filling an affidavit to withdraw their application from Supreme Court. Mohammad Tamsil Quddusi and 10 other residents have moved a petition through advocate Fahad Khan. It is stated that 9 properties don't fall within the Khasra Number 279. Two properties of Qademul Faraz and Nassu Ahmed fall within the Khasra Number 279 but are eligible under PM Uday Scheme. It was also stated that before pasting notices on the premises of petitioners by the DDA, they were not given an opportunity to be heard or redressal. Petitioner Badruddin has even not received the notice. He was orally informed by the DDA officials that his property will also be demolished. The Delhi High court' division bench on Wednesday allowed Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan to withdraw his Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against the proposed demolition. The Division bench had noted that the petitioner would inform the residents of his area to file an appropriate petition before the single judge bench which have already granted protection to some petitioners.
