Thierry Henry gives his honest verdict on Viktor Gyokeres after his £64m move to Arsenal after a mixed pre-season
Gyokeres arrives with a sizzling reputation after scoring 97 goals and providing 28 assists in two seasons with Sporting Lisbon - but the Premier League is a different beast.
The Swedish marksman made a faint impression when he was at Brighton - only earning eight outings in four seasons and being constantly farmed out on loan - but is remembered by Coventry City fans for his prolific net-busting in the Championship.
Now he is back on English turf, and as is custom for anyone who signs for one of his alma mater, Henry has been asked to weigh in. It also sends a strong message that Gyokeres has taken Henry's old number: 14.
The Frenchman is arguably the most legendary striker in Arsenal's history and his words have the power to influence fan sentiment.
He said: 'He already was in England, let's not forget that. He was at Coventry, he couldn't do it at Brighton.
'So, you can see a guy who already knows what struggling is and comes back from that.
'He's more confident, and you can see from his body the way he's looked after himself, the way he's changed.
'You have a guy that's a killer in the box – numbers don't lie – and you have a team that creates a lot of chances, so it should be the perfect match.
'It's always unfair when I talk about a striker, it brings an unnecessary pressure because it goes above and beyond.
'What you want is people to be patient with him, and what is annoying right now is that people are not that patient anymore.
'They want the guy to perform straight away, score goals straight away and make us win straight away, which doesn't happen often. Sometimes it doesn't click straight away.
'I love when people show me what they can do, and then I can talk. Right now, people love to talk before the performance.
'I'm an Arsenal fan, I obviously hope he's going to do well, bang goals for us, and guide us to a title, but he's not going to do that alone.
'We have seen that goals don't always assure you a title. We've seen guys with mad numbers, but they didn't win anything. The team around them has to be good.
'From what I've seen from him and how he finishes, hopefully it's going to be a great match and we can finally go back to lift that trophy. But, a lot of teams want to lift that.'
Gyokeres has hit the ground running with the Gunners, scoring on his second friendly outing in a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Emirates Cup final.
He is the first top out-and-out striker they have had since the 2021-22 season, when they were serviced up front by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Arsenal star told to improve after Man Utd display: 'Everything is the same'
Paul Parker fears Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has become too predictable going forward after his quiet display against Manchester United. The Gunners scraped past United in their Premier League opener, with Riccardo Calafiori's header securing a 1-0 win at Old Trafford. But it was hardly a vintage attacking display from Mikel Arteta's side, who lacked a great deal of fluency in the attacking third. Summer signing Viktor Gyokeres endured an underwhelming start to his Premier League career, while Gabriel Martinelli struggled to get into the game off the left wing. However, Parker admitted he was most concerned by the performance of Saka, who completed just three of his eight dribbles and managed just the solitary shot on goal. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The 23-year-old has been virtually ever-present in Arsenal's front line over recent years but has now scored just once in his last ten league fixtures since returning from a long-term hamstring injury in April. 'When you talk about Saka, I think he needs to get different pictures in his game. Everything is the same,' Parker told Metro via 7bet football betting. 'He hasn't got tremendous pace. Has he really got a trick to go past people? No – he's looking for people to dive in all the time. 'If you stop his run, then he hasn't really got anything else in my opinion. Everything is about him fainting and then checkinng back and crossing it, but then you have to have midfield players who are going to make those runs into the box. 'The game was away from home which does make a difference and maybe when the set-up is different at home that will be allowed to happen. 'But he was up against Luke Shaw, a physical presence which Saka doesn't like, and then up against Dorgu who was very tenacious and he didn't like that.' Having finally added an out-and-out striker over the off-season, many have tipped Arsenal to finally get over the line after three successive second-place finishes in the league. But Parker is not convinced of Arsenal's title credentials after their first performance of the season, and challenged Arteta to change his own methods to try and take the pressure off his side. 'I'm still not sure about Arsenal but they are in the position that Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool have been in in the past where people are now expecting more from you all the time,' Parker added. 'Now you have to look at the manager and how he deals with it but he isn't always the best best person to handle something. More Trending 'He shows it, he wants to talk about things too much and he puts the team under more pressure and that's the bit he hasn't learnt about managing a side that now is expected to deliver. 'There was expectation before, but the way they have talked themselves into this position and how they have sold themselves means that now everyone is looking at them. 'Arsenal had that in the early years with Arsene Wenger and he handled it perfectly and knew exactly when to lift it and when to play it down. 'Arteta has to learn that because there's so much pressure on his team and he has to learn how to take the pressure off rather than put it on.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Alexander Isak 'expected to MISS PFA awards' despite being nominated for top prize - as his self-imposed Newcastle exile to force Liverpool move continues
Wantaway Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is expected to miss the glitzy Professional Footballers' Association awards gala on Tuesday night, according to a report. The striker has been nominated for the biggest prize of the night, Players' Player of the Year, but he will reportedly miss the occasion as his self-imposed exile, in order to force through a move to Liverpool, continues. Isak was the subject of a £110million bid from Arne Slot 's side last month, which was promptly rejected by the Newcastle hierarchy, who are believed to value Isak at closer to £150m. The saga began at the beginning of the summer when the talented frontman initially reported an injury to keep him out of the Magpies' pre-season tour and the stand-off has continued since. Isak, who has been heavily criticised in the media and by Magpies fans, then missed Newcastle's 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday, a move that saw him fined by the club. During that clash, he was targeted by supporter chants where he was labelled as a 'greedy b*****d'. Despite the constant speculation surrounding his future, Isak hasn't publicly commented. The Swedish striker is nominated for the night's biggest prize but is yet to confirm his attendance According to a BBC report, the 25-year-old is yet to confirm his attendance with just over 24 hours until the event. The report goes on to claim that sources have indicated that the forward is not planning to be there. On Saturday, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was unsurprisingly probed on the issue of Isak's future at every opportunity and he provided an update after the Villa clash. 'We would like a resolution,' he said. 'I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. We need that clarity. You don't need any distraction. 'But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.' He added: 'This season, any season, every season, is going to be hard enough. You don't need any kind of distraction to swerve your thoughts, to unbalance what we're doing. 'I hope it's resolved quickly, because it's news around us all the time. The players have managed to shut that out and perform. We have to continue to do that.' Of the fan chant aimed at Isak, Howe said: 'Whatever happens, I think the support has acted really well today because they supported the team, which is always my big ask, to support the team when we're playing. 'And they've done that unbelievably well in some difficult moments during the four years. And then if afterwards they want to say something, I think they're very free to do that.' Howe then reiterated his wish for Isak to return to the squad, and said: 'Nothing has changed, but the door is well and truly open. But yeah, he has to decide what he wants to do.' On Monday, Isak received the backing of his international manager, Jon Dahl Tomasson, who described him as 'an extremely professional player'. 'Situations like this are quite complex,' Tomasson told Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen. 'These are extremely complex environments that the players operate in. 'I'm sure it will work out in the end, but you have to know the whole picture before you draw conclusions. That's always a good tip.'
