Religious structure with bathtub inside, and other buildings: Why Jamnagar administration is clearing ‘encroachments' along Rangmati river
On Sunday, a video of a bathtub inside a religious structure in Jamnagar went viral on social media. Built on the banks of river Rangmati, the structure is among several others demolished by the Jamnagar police on Saturday as part of an ongoing anti-encroachment drive.
On Sunday, police said, they cleared 71,933.5 square metres of encroached land on both banks of the river in an area known as Bachu Nagar, located at the heart of the city.
'There are all sorts of residential, commercial and religious encroachments here, totalling more than 600 structures. While we cleared 294 structures yesterday (June 14), in total, we have cleared about 400 till now,' said Jamnagar Superintendent of Police (SP) Premsukh Delu on Sunday, adding that the drive is being conducted in a phase-wise manner.
The local administration has cited severe flooding, alleged encroachment by what they termed as miscreants, and plans for a riverfront development project, to rationalise the demolitions underway on Rangmati banks, one of the two rivers that flow through Jamnagar, the other being Nagmati. The Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC) told the police that the valuation of the encroached land stood at approximately Rs 193.57 crore.
Talking about the religious structure, the largest that the JMC and the police have cleared till now, Delu said, 'This particular religious structure was built like a fort and the inside was like a maze. The premises were large and built over 11,000 square feet (1,021 sq metres). There were several rooms and a bathtub inside. Outside the room, there was a warning that entry is restricted and allowed only by permission.'
Detailing on who took the action, Delu said, 'It is a joint action by the JMC and the District Police. Apart from illegal homes of miscreants on our list, the civic body is also working on its pre-monsoon plan. There are plans to develop this area into a riverfront as well.'
Delu stated that encroachments are located mainly outside the walled city of Jamnagar, on the river banks. 'Because of this, the river used to extend right up to the walls, causing the encroachments to enter deep into the river bed,' he added.
SP Delu said that Jamnagar city has regularly been facing a problem of severe flooding. 'The CM's (Bhupendra Patel) first visit after assuming office was to Jamnagar due to the floods. Last year (2024), again there were floods. The encroachment on the river is the reason why this problem was exacerbated,' the SP added.

Hyderabad: A senior manager of DigiTele Networks Pvt Ltd, an IT and drone services provider associated with Greenko Group, has been accused of siphoning off more than Rs 2 crore by routing projects through two private companies he secretly controlled. A case has been registered by the Central Crime Station (CCS) following a complaint by the company. In his complaint, the company's authorised signatory, Venkata Thota accused Madan V Golagabathula of conspiring with select Greenko officials and outside clients to defraud the company. Madan had joined DigiTele in Dec 2014 and handled business development, billing, and recruitment. "Madan secretly incorporated 9th Pixel Geosoft (OPC), exercising full control over its operations and finances. As part of his conspiracy, he also brought in another entity, Atree Solutions, owned by Chandra Murali. By misleading Greenko officials and misrepresenting 9th Pixel and Atree Solutions as associates of DigiTele, Madan secured contracts for these entities while utilising DigiTele and Greenko's employees and resources to execute the work. Invoices were raised in the names of his personal companies while payments were misappropriated, resulting in significant financial losses to DigiTele and Greenko," the complainant alleged. Between April 2022 and Jan 2025, 9th Pixel booked revenue of about Rs 2 crore, while Atree Solutions earned nearly Rs 28 lakh from Sept 2023 to June 2024, as per the complaint. "Both firms had no staff or equipment. DigiTele and Greenko employees executed the work while invoices were raised at inflated rates," the complaint reads. Investigators uncovered alleged kickbacks worth Rs 48 lakh paid to 10 DigiTele and Greenko employees to suppress the irregularities. A further 50 recruits were placed on DigiTele rolls without approval, the complainant said. Based on the complaint, CCS registered a case against Madan, Chandra Murali and others under sections 316(4) (criminal breach of trust by clerk or servant), 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 336(3) (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 340(2) (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) read with 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Faridabad Police arrest 2 men after encounter in Rs 1 crore extortion case
According to the police spokesperson, a case of extortion was registered on April 27 at Saran Police Station after the accused fired bullets at the house of the complainant. The accused were identified as Karan Garhwal (22), and his accomplice, Shad Qureshi (21), they said. Faridabad, Jun 16 (PTI) Faridabad police arrested two men, following an encounter, for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 1 crore from a textile businessman, police said on Monday. The Crime Branch Sector 30 team received information on Sunday night that Karan Garhwal, the main accused, was spotted near Hanuman Temple on the Gurugram-Pali road. When the police team approached, Garhwal fired at them and attempted to flee. In the ensuing encounter, police retaliated, injuring Garhwal in his right leg. He was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. During interrogation, Garhwal revealed that acting on the instructions of his associate Kamal Bhadana, he, along with other accomplices, had shot at the complainant's house in April. After the incident, Garhwal fled to Uttar Pradesh but returned to his residence in Dabua Colony on June 15, where he was arrested by the police. Garhwal has five previous cases against him, including charges of assault and attempted murder. He was produced in court and sent to judicial custody, the police spokesperson said. Meanwhile, Shad Qureshi, Garhwal's accomplice, was also arrested on Monday. During interrogation, Qureshi disclosed that he had fled to Haridwar and later to Mawana in Uttar Pradesh to evade arrest. After enduring five years of violence, her divorce has been finalised. 'This is my last visit here,' she says, breaking into a faint smile. Indore, Jun 16 (PTI) Preeti (name changed) sits quietly on a plastic chair under a tree outside a One Stop Centre here. Her dupatta is neatly folded on her lap and her eyes shine with purpose. 'He kicked me even when I was carrying his child. But this place helped me walk away,' Preeti told PTI about her now ex-husband. She said this OSC helped her close a painful chapter of her life and she does not want to look back. 'This place gave me the courage to leave. Now, I can start over,' she said. Launched in 2015 under the 'Nirbhaya Fund' following the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, the OSC scheme was envisioned as a nationwide support system for women facing violence in any form — physical, sexual, emotional or economic. Also known as 'Sakhi Centres', these facilities are now operational in districts across India, offering integrated services under one roof. The centre in Indore is one of the country's more active and fully functional models. The centre offers legal aid, medical assistance, emergency shelter, psychological counselling, police facilitation and linkage to social welfare schemes — all coordinated through a single window. Since its inception in 2016, the Indore OSC has registered more than 15,683 cases. Each of these is not just a file — it's a story of pain, survival and, often, justice. Not sitting far from Preeti is Sita (name changed), whose husband circulated intimate videos of her. 'When I saw my neighbour watching that video on his phone, I knew I could not stay silent,' she said. Sita claimed her husband is wealthy and powerful, while she comes from a family of daily wage labourers. 'We earn Rs 500-600 a day. We cannot support her for long,' said Sita's sister-in-law, sitting beside her. 'We came here hoping someone will.' Inside the centre, the atmosphere is quiet but brisk. Women arrive at all hours, some with babies in arms, others with hesitant steps and tear-streaked faces. 'This place does not close,' says Dr. Vanshchna Singh Parihar, Women Empowerment Officer at the OSC. 'Like hospitals and police stations, we run 24X7. Violence doesn't follow office hours,' she said. Parihar explained that survivors receive six core services — medical aid, police assistance, legal support, psychological counselling, temporary shelter and social reintegration. 'And beyond that we provide whatever emergency help is needed, be it food, clothing, or protection,' she added. One of the biggest advantages of the OSC model is its single-window access. 'A woman does not have to run from police (station) to hospital to court. Here, everything is under one roof. We coordinate with the home ministry, health ministry, legal services authorities, and NGOs,' she said. Women come to the centre through multiple channels — via the 181 women's helpline, Anganwadi workers, court referrals, NGOs, or they simply walk in. The first step is always the same: being heard. 'They first come to me. I listen to their story, take a full statement and assess where to direct the case for counselling, to police, or for legal aid,' Dr. Parihar said. 'In 70-80 per cent of domestic violence cases, early counselling prevents escalation. If reconciliation is possible, we try. If a woman does not want to go back, we help her move forward, legally and emotionally,' she said. For many, the OSC is a last resort. Among such women is Roshni (name changed), who came to the centre with her six-month-old daughter and her mother. 'My husband became violent after I gave birth to our daughter. He says she is a burden,' Roshni said. Anjali Tiwari, a woman constable posted at the OSC, is part of a three-member team that works in 8-hour shifts round the clock. 'Seeing a woman in uniform gives them confidence. Women coming in tell me, 'I want my daughter to grow up to be like you'. That is what keeps me going,' she said. From medical examinations to escorting women to court, Tiwari helps with everything at the OSC. 'For many, this is the first place they feel safe,' she said.
