'Quality Of Journalism Has Gone Down': Rohit Sharma Slams Scribes, Commentators
Last Updated:
India ODI skipper Rohit Sharma has criticised media for prioritising views over cricket analysis.
India ODI skipper Rohit Sharma, who announced his Test retirement on Wednesday, has taken a massive dig at reporters and commentators, saying that the quality of journalism has gone down and there is no discussion on tactics and analysis, rather focusing more on garnering views.
Rohit said that the current state of commentary in India is a disservice to genuine cricket lovers who are eager to deepen their understanding of cricket.
Rohit accused Indian broadcasters of focusing on a single star player and discussing his personal life, rather than appreciating the cricket itself.
'You guys are focused on creating controversy, on blowing up news. The quality of journalism has gone down. Earlier, conversations would revolve around cricket. Now, it's all about getting views, likes, and making more people read your articles," Rohit said while speaking to journalist Vimal Kumar.
'Very little is written or spoken about the game itself. Tactics, analysis, it's all missing. When there's a match on, we watch it on TV. But listen to how commentators speak these days," Rohit added.
The India ODI captain isn't the sole senior player to have voiced concerns about the standard of commentary in India. Ace India batter Virat Kohli has been critical as well in the past.
'Yes, things have sometimes gone out of our hands, and we haven't performed well. We fully deserve criticism for that. Yes, we didn't do well against New Zealand at home, so yes, criticise us," Rohit said.
'But there's a way to criticise people. I think here, it's agenda-driven criticism. That's not likeable," Rohit added.
Meanwhile, the man who handed the India ODI captain his Test cap marvelled at his growth in the format, while the bunch which bloomed under his captaincy called Rohit a talismanic presence in the dressing room.
The 38-year-old India ODI skipper announced his retirement from Tests on Wednesday, having represented India in 67 matches in which he led in 24.
Rohit will next be seen in action when the Mumbai Indians take on the Punjab Kings on Sunday, May 11 in Ahmedabad, a fixture which was shifted from Dharamsala due to the closure of airports across multiple venues in North India due to India-Pakistan cross-border tensions.

Women's ODI World Cup: Delay In Forming LOC Raises Concern Within BCCI
Last Updated: The Women's ODI World Cup is nearing, but the BCCI hasn't formed the local organizing committee. The tournament runs from Sept 30 to Nov 2 across five venues, including Colombo. The Women's ODI World Cup is imminent, and yet the host Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to establish the local organising committee (LOC) responsible for the smooth operation of the ICC event. The LOC's formation was tabled during the BCCI Apex Council meeting in March, but a decision was deferred. Earlier this month, the ICC announced a partial schedule for the tournament, which will be played across five venues from September 30 to November 2. Colombo will serve as the neutral venue for matches involving Pakistan, as per the hybrid model agreed upon by the BCCI, PCB, and ICC for all ICC events until 2027. The BCCI's senior officials were occupied with the Indian Premier League (IPL) until 3 June, and with the Apex Council expected to meet soon, the LOC may finally be formed. 'There is no deadline per se to form the LOC but it is always better if these things are done well in advance. In countries like England and Australia, you would normally see the LOC in place a year before the event and even the schedule is out well in advance so that the fans can plan," a BCCI source was quoted as saying to PTI. 'As far as the conduct of the tournament goes, the LOC is the main body responsible for sorting out the logistics for the participating teams. Needless to say, it has a massive role to play," the source added. India will host a women's ICC event for the first time since 2016, when it last staged the T20 World Cup alongside the men's tournament. It is worth noting that there was a considerable delay in announcing the schedule for the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup hosted by India, which was finalised at the last minute owing to logistical challenges. The four Indian venues for the Women's ODI World Cup are Bengaluru, Guwahati, Vizag, and Indore. The last 50-over women's World Cup was held in India in 2013. Despite the recent equal pay initiative by the BCCI and the resources at its disposal over the past decade, the women's team is yet to win an ICC trophy. First Published: June 11, 2025, 18:36 IST

Pooran surprised the world on Tuesday by announcing his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. Since bursting onto the international scene in 2016, Pooran featured in 106 T20Is and 61 ODIs, garnering more than 4,258 runs across both formats. "Catching yaar": India players engage in intense fielding drills filled with banter ahead of England Tests
London [UK], June 11 (ANI): Indian players engaged in intense fielding drills, which were topped up by a fun banter between the players as they continued to fortify their preparations for the upcoming Test series against England. Fielding coach T Dilip orchestrated the fielding drills, which involved taking low and high catches and hitting the stumps from a distance, in a video posted by the BCCI. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant's throw was a whisker away from hitting the stump, and he expressed his agony by saying, 'Arey yaar.' In one instance, Indian Test captain Shubman Gill was impressed when his Gujarat Titans teammate Sai Sudharsan took a sharp catch and said, 'Catching yaar.' Towards the end of the video, Mohammed Siraj celebrated by jumping in the air after cleanly completing a catch. After batting wizards Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bid adieu to Test cricket last month, India was left short on experience. With India bereft of its torchbearers, the management turned to youngsters to mark the beginning of a new era. The five-test tour of England starts June 20 at Leeds and lasts until August 2025. With India lining up without its batting bigwigs Rohit and Virat following their retirement from the game's longest format, the onus lies on the Shubman-led revamped side to prove itself away from home in testing and gruelling English conditions. The series will be held from June to August, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. England squad for first Test vs India: Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Ben Stokes (capt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
