India's energy sector is rising through global uncertainty: Hardeep Puri
"While the world faces fuel volatility, India is moving ahead with reforms. Oil refining capacity in the country has increased from 215 to 258 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), and Jamnagar is now Asia's largest refinery, exporting petroleum products to 100+ countries," the minister said in a post on X.
Highlighting the reforms in the upstream oil & gas exploration and production segment, the minister said that the open acreage licensing policy (OALP) Round 10 has unlocked 2.5 lakh sq km for further exploration and production. The clearances required for exploration have also been reduced from 37 to 18 to facilitate the ease of doing business.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision is driving India's energy security through resilience with over $1.3 billion having been invested in the upstream segment to increase oil exploration and production," he said.
The minister has also recently highlighted in the Parliament that India is witnessing a renewed surge in
oil and gas exploration
with the opening of nearly one million square kilometres of erstwhile 'No-Go' offshore areas in 2022.
Since 2015, Exploration and Production (E&P) companies operating in India have reported 172
hydrocarbon discoveries
, including 62 in offshore areas. Puri highlighted the geological significance of the AN basin, which lies at the junction of the Andaman and Nicobar Basins within the Bengal-Arakan sedimentary system.
The tectonic setting, located at the boundary of the Indian and Burmese plates, has led to the formation of numerous stratigraphic traps that are conducive to hydrocarbon accumulation. This geological promise is further amplified by the basin's proximity to proven petroleum systems in Myanmar and North Sumatra. The region has attracted renewed global interest following significant gas discoveries in South Andaman offshore Indonesia, underlining the geological continuity across the region, the minister explained.
In a significant development, ONGC and Oil India Ltd (OIL) have launched an ambitious exploration campaign in the Andaman ultra-deepwater region. For the first time, drilling operations are targeting depths of up to 5,000 metres. One such wildcat well, ANDW-7, drilled in a carbonate play in the East Andaman Back Arc region, has yielded encouraging geological insights. These include traces of light crude and condensate in cutting samples, heavy hydrocarbons like C-5 neo-pentane in trip gases, the minister further stated.
These findings establish, for the first time, the existence of an active thermogenic petroleum system in the region, comparable to those in Myanmar and North Sumatra. While commercial reserves remain to be established, this campaign has validated the presence of a working petroleum system and laid the foundation for focused exploration in the area, the minister said.
Providing an overview of the exploration outcomes so far, the Minister informed that ONGC has made hydrocarbon discoveries in 20 blocks, with an estimated reserve of 75 million metric tonnes of oil equivalent (MMTOE). Oil India Ltd., on its part, has made seven oil and gas discoveries over the past four years, with reserves estimated at 9.8 million barrels of oil and 2,706.3 million standard cubic meters of gas.

Self-reliance, use of technology, health competition: Delhi Police chief outlines 3 focus areas on I-Day
Delhi Police Commissioner S B K Singh Friday, urged the force to strive for self-reliance, the use of technology and healthy competition. During the Independence Day celebrations at the Delhi Police headquarters, the police chief, while addressing the force, reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision on these three points, which he had outlined at the Red Fort. During his address, Singh directed Delhi Police units to work on 'atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) and come up with a proposal within 15 days. The aim is to make the Delhi Police self-reliant on as many fronts to stop dependence on other units for things like commandos, bomb disposal squads and wireless sets, he said. 'Although the Delhi Police have always been making the best use of technology and we are way ahead on this front, there is still a need to go further,' he said. 'We need to embrace this principle at an individual and as well as at the organisational level.' He advised the units and districts of the Delhi Police to work on this principle to develop a sense of healthy competition among themselves. While expressing his concern, the police commissioner said that despite working so hard, even beyond working hours, the force has not been able to win the trust of the public as it should have. He further suggested that every police personnel needs to come out of a feudalistic mindset and shift attitude from 'Shasak Bhav' to 'Sewa Bhav' to make the public feel more comfortable approaching the police in case of need. The force's head also took the opportunity to congratulate the 18 officers and personnel of Delhi Police who have been awarded police medals for 'distinguished service' and 'meritorious service' on the occasion of Independence Day, acknowledging their hard work and dedication.

Delhi–Gurugram commuters, your wait is over – this new route is expected to cut travel time to 30 mins
Travelling between Delhi and Gurugram is set for a major transformation. With the launch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway, commuters finally have an alternative to the heavily congested NH-48. Reportedly, the twin corridors are expected to bring travel time from Delhi to Gurugram down to under 30 minutes, while also easing pressure on choke points such as Ring Road, Dhaula Kuan and Mahipalpur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday will inaugurate the 76-km UER-II, known as Delhi's new 'outer ring road,' and the 29-km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway. Together, the projects are expected to transform connectivity between Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Jaipur. UER-II runs from Alipur in North Delhi to Mahipalpur near IGI Airport. Built at a cost of around ₹ 7,700 crore, it connects Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh and Dwarka, while also linking with highways to Chandigarh, Rohtak and Sonipat. The Dwarka Expressway stretch, costing about ₹ 9,000 crore, extends from Kherki Daula toll plaza in Gurugram to Shiv Murti near Mahipalpur, directly linking with the Gurugram portion inaugurated in March 2024. With these corridors now operational, travel from Noida or Dwarka to IGI Airport will take just 20 minutes. More importantly for daily commuters, the new routes create a parallel path to Gurugram, bypassing NH-48 and the notorious traffic at Dhaula Kuan and Mahipalpur. Officials said the shift is expected to significantly reduce load on Delhi–Gurugram Expressway. For lakhs of commuters, the new roads promise more predictable travel times, shorter drives to Gurugram's business hubs, and relief from chronic congestion. Together with existing expressways, the projects are being seen as a game-changer for Delhi–NCR's road network.
