Bad Beat: Ole Miss' meaningless 3-pointer crushes Michigan State backers in Sweet Sixteen
Friday night's Sweet Sixteen matchup between No. 6 seed Ole Miss and No. 2 seed Michigan State produced an all-time comeback by the Spartans — and an all-time bad beat for Spartans bettors.
While Michigan State won outright, 73-70, after facing a 10-point deficit, a meaningless three-pointer from Ole Miss' Matthew Murrell as time expired wiped out a win against the spread. The Spartans 3.5-point favorites and attracted a vast majority of all bets and all money at BetMGM.
As of Friday morning, 79 percent of all wagers and 85 percent of the handle was on Michigan State, making this a horrible beat for the public and a great game for the books.
Take a look at how crushing the buzzer-beater was. Murrell's heave clanked off the back of the rim before dropping through the net as if taunting the gamblers who were paying close attention to it.

Michigan State assistant coach to be his GM, it reminds me of the Charlotte Hornets under Michael Jordan when he hired Mitch Kupchak, former Chapel Hill guy, uh, UNC guy, Mitch Mitch Kupchak to be his GM and Buzz Peterson, Michael Jordan's roommate at college to be the assistant GM. It just feels like that recipe of of. Of hiring your buddies, hiring your college buddies, isn't necessarily a recipe for success, but it is something you can do as an owner. So like keeping things all in the family, that's always been true in the NBA previous to the Jordan not higher. Michigan State picks up commitment from 3-star CB KJ Deriso of Fayetteville, Ga. Michigan State football added to its 2026 class on Friday afternoon thanks to a commitment from a cornerback prospect from SEC country. KJ Deriso of Fayetteville, Ga. announced his commitment to Michigan State on Friday, becoming the Spartans' seventh commitment in the 2026 class. Deriso announced his commitment to the Spartans via a post on his Instagram account. Deriso is a three-star prospect with a recruiting rating of 87 on 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 79 cornerback in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 class. According to Justin Thind of 247Sports, Deriso has cancelled his official visit to Kentucky and is locked in with the Spartans following his commitment. Michigan State beat out Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Mississippi State, Syracuse, Tulane, UCF and a host of group of five schools for Deriso's commitment. Michigan State is set to kickoff another big weekend of recruiting with numerous official visits planned starting today. So the commitment from Deriso is a great way for Michigan State to get the weekend started. ESPN FPI gives Michigan State near zero percent chance of reaching College Football Playoff Each P4 Team's Chance to Make CFP 🏈 (via ESPN FPI) — CFB Tracker (@MatchupTracker) June 6, 2025 Michigan State football has been given a near zero percent chance of reaching the College Football Playoff in 2025 by one metric system. While the betting odds are posted at +1800 for Michigan State to make the 2025 College Football Playoff (which isn't as high as I personally would have thought), ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) is giving the Spartans essentially no chance of reaching the playoff. ESPN's FPI rating system gives the Spartans a 1% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff this year -- which is one of the lowest of all the power four teams. Per ESPN's FPI, these are the only power four teams with a lower percentage to reach the College Football Playoff: Oklahoma State (0.9%) Vanderbilt (0.9%) West Virginia (0.8%) Mississippi State (0.7%) Arizona (0.5%) Stanford (0.5%) Syracuse (0.5%) Houston (0.3%) Northwestern (0%) Purdue (0%) Wake Forest (0%) FPI is a predictive rating system used by ESPN to measure and project the strength of college football teams. These ratings take a lot of things into consideration and can help predict how things will play out this fall. While I'm not expecting a College Football Playoff run for the Spartans in 2025, I would personally give them a much higher chance than 1% of making it happen. I wrote recently how there is a path for the Spartans to be this year's Indiana and reach the College Football Playoff, and I simply wouldn't have written that article if I thought it was a 1% chance of happening. So with all due respect to ESPN's FPI ratings, I'm going to pass on these odds and give the Spartans more of a fighting chance of shocking the college football world in 2025.
