NMDC to offer free courses for ST students
The initiatives — Balika Shiksha Yojana (BSY) for tribal girls and a Medical Technology Programme in partnership with Apollo University, Chittoor — are designed to bridge the opportunity gap for tribal communities.
As part of BSY, NMDC is offering 100% free nursing education to young tribal girls from Bastar, Dantewada, Sukma, Kondagaon, Bijapur, and Narayanpur.
The selected students can pursue BSc Nursing (4 years) or GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery, 3 years) courses at reputed institutions such as Apollo School of Nursing, Yashoda School of Nursing, and KIMS College of Nursing in Hyderabad.

ONGC to fund cancer infrastructure in three hospitals
Kakinada: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has agreed to provide financial support for the installation of advanced radiation machines for cancer treatment at government hospitals in Kakinada, Guntur, and Kadapa districts. The initiative, costing Rs 48 crore, will be funded under ONGC's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The decision was taken following a meeting between Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and a delegation comprising Dr P Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, and Rajya Sabha MP Sana Satish Babu. During the meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday, the leaders sought central assistance in strengthening the fight against cancer in Andhra Pradesh. Speaking to 'The Hans India', MP Satish Babu said that the proposal involved the procurement of three state-of-the-art radiation therapy machines, each worth approximately Rs 16 crore. Minister Puri responded positively and initiated discussions with ONGC officials, leading to the company's commitment to provide the equipment. He also said that these machines will play a crucial role in the early detection and effective radiation treatment of cancer. The equipment will soon be installed at the respective government hospitals, significantly enhancing oncology infrastructure and care in the region.

Union Petroleum Minister promises ₹48 crore for cancer treatment equipment in three government general hospitals in Andhra Pradesh
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has, in principle, assured ₹48 crore financial assistance from his Ministry towards providing medical equipment for treatment of cancer in the government general hospitals in Kakinada, Guntur and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh. At a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications P. Chandra Sekhar and Rajya Sabha member S. Sathish Babu, who hails from Kakinada, urged the Union Minister to provide the equipment under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), a release issued by Mr. Sathish Babu said. 'Mr. Hardeep Singh has assured to offer ₹48 crore through the CSR fund from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) towards providing medical equipment for cancer screening and radiation treatment,' the release said. 'The equipment, each worth ₹16 crore, will be installed in the government general hospitals for better cancer treatment in the respective regions,' Mr. Sathish Babu added.

Costly Drug Now Free For Needy Patients With Rare Skin Disease: Doctors & NGO
Nagpur: Needy patients suffering from a rare and painful skin disorder, Autoimmune Blistering Disease, can now receive the costly drug, Rituximab, free of charge, thanks to the initiative by the Pune-based foundation, AIBDF. The announcement came during a doctors' and public awareness programme organised by the Vidarbha Dermatology Society (VDS) attended by over 200 dermatologists from across Vidarbha. "This disease is rare but deadly, and incredibly painful. Our foundation provides Rituximab injection free of cost to needy patients so they can access the best treatment," said Dr Vikrant Saoji, a senior dermatologist. Suratwala explains that he started AIBDF in memory of his late wife, Jayshree Suratwala, who tragically lost her life to this disease during the pandemic. "I wanted to ensure that no one else suffers the way she did," he said. Senior dermatologist Dr Vinit Dubey from Chandrapur sent the very first patient to AIBDF in 2023. "The patient came from a very poor family," he said, adding, "Thanks to AIBDF, my patient received the expensive medicine for free and is now doing well." Dr Asra Khumushi, president of VDS, says the initiative is a game-changer for many underprivileged patients. "I have several patients with autoimmune blistering diseases, and many come from low-income backgrounds. Steroids are often prescribed but have severe side effects. Rituximab is the most proven and effective drug. Thanks to this NGO, it's possible now for many poor patients to get this treatment," Dr Khumushi explains. Dr Nitin Barde, another dermatologist, highlighted the financial relief for patients. "The entire treatment still adds up to around Rs one lakh. The foreign version costs over Rs three lakh per dose. So, getting this drug free of cost is a huge relief for patients," he says. Jayant Hemade, co-founder of AIBDF, and a family friend of Suratwala, said the NGO has far helped 25 patients. "Until now, the foundation was entirely funded by Suratwala. But we've recently secured CSR certification and will start accepting corporate support," Hemade said. He urged both patients and dermatologists to spread the good word. VDS secretary Dr Priyanka Magia discussed the importance of early diagnosis. "Hundreds of dermatologists across Vidarbha are now aware of this service. I urge anyone experiencing symptoms of this disease to consult a dermatologist as soon as possible, because patients must go through specialists to avail this benefit," Dr Magia advises. According to doctors, AIIMS Nagpur treated 70 patients with autoimmune blistering diseases in the past three years, highlighting the growing need for accessible treatment in the region.
