Toddler found safe in back seat of stolen vehicle that crashed after 100 mph pursuit
The details of the vehicle theft and resulting chase in St. Clair and Macomb counties were related in reports by the Port Huron Police Department and St. Clair County Sheriff's office.
The vehicle was stolen about 9 p.m. by a male juvenile from a gas station in the area of Pine Grove Avenue and Hancock Street in Port Huron, the reports said. A toddler was asleep in the vehicle's back seat at the time.
A Marysville Police officer saw the stolen vehicle on Interstate 94 near Gratiot Road / Exit 266, and attempted to stop it. But the driver sped off, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit. A deputy from the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office then saw the vehicle on westbound I-94 south of County Line Road.
"The vehicle failed to stop and continued to flee from police putting themselves, the child, the public and law enforcement in danger," deputies said.
Speeds reached over 100 mph during the chase, Port Huron police said.
Deputies related that at one point, the driver exited onto 23 Mile Road and then re-entered the interstate.
The pursuit ended as the suspect crashed into multiple parked cars near the Sugarbush Tavern off 21 Mile Road near Sugarbush Road in Chesterfield, which is in Macomb County.
Emergency medical personnel checked the child, who was found unharmed and cleared at the scene.
The driver, whom deputies identified as "a juvenile with a lengthy criminal history," was immediately taken into custody. The suspect has since been lodged at Macomb Juvenile Detention Facility.
Other agencies assisting on this call included Marysville Police Department, Macomb County Sheriff's Office and Chesterfield Police Department.
"We want to thank the Marysville Police Department, St. Clair County Sheriff's Office, Macomb County Sheriff's Office, and Chesterfield Township Police Department for their swift response and teamwork in bringing this dangerous situation to a safe resolution," the Port Huron report said.
"Great work by deputies, officers and Central Dispatch today. When a child is involved, situations are certainly more heightened and we are all grateful the child was unharmed in this instance," St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King said about the incident.

Fatal shooting of Shelby Township suspect justified, prosecutor says
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office hosted a press conference Thursday at its headquarters building in Mt. Clemens to report on and present some of the bodycam footage from a June fatal shooting of a suspect in Shelby Township. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, who spoke at the press conference, said he has concluded the shooting was justified. "When he was ordered and commanded to stop and still went on after tase attempted, there was also another officer on the opposite side yelling gun, gun, gun. As a result of that, you have a duty to protect yourself and anyone else as a lawful officer," Lucido said. The investigation involves a June 3 incident during which Shelby Township police fatally shot a man who ran away from a traffic stop. That afternoon, the Shelby Township officer attempted a traffic stop on a white Dodge Caravan in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and 22 Mile Road. During the stop, police say the suspect, a 41-year-old Troy man who was driving the Caravan, got out and ran off. A police chase resulted behind a nearby business, and the suspect is accused of continuing to run and then drawing a weapon. The officer ordered the man to drop his weapon. Eight shots were fired, five of which struck the man, according to authorities. The suspect, who has since been identified as Thomas Antonio Jackson, 41, of Troy, died at an area hospital. Since that time, police learned the weapon involved was stolen in a 2023 auto larceny. They also learned Jackson had five warrants for his arrest, and his license was suspended. The officer who fired the shots has resumed duty. His name will not be released per department policy. Authorities say Jackson's family has retained an attorney. Family of man killed at Detroit Lions tailgate sues Eastern Market, security company
The family of a man killed at a Detroit Lions tailgate at Eastern Market in September 2024 has filed a lawsuit against the venue and two other companies, claiming negligence by the three parties. The lawsuit was filed July 31 in Wayne County Circuit Court on behalf of the estate of Rayshawn Palmer, age 40, of Detroit, one of the two who died in a shooting that took place Sept. 15, 2024, during a tailgate party at Eastern Market. The defending parties are Eastern Market Corporation, Shield Security Consultants and Protection Services, and Bullseye Event Group. The tailgate gathering was at the Eastern Market venue and hosted by Bullseye Events. Shield Security was a third-party security company hired to work at the event. The lawsuit seeks at least $25,000 in damages for medical, funeral and burial expenses related to Palmer's fatal injuries. "The shooting was a foreseeable act in light of the history of similar activity on or near the premises and the absence of reasonable preventative measures by Defendants," the lawsuit claims. The lawsuit was filed by Orlando-based personal injury law firm Morgan & Morgan on behalf of Palmer's family. The law firm said in a statement that Palmer was not involved in the conflict but instead "tried to de-escalate the situation." "Rayshawn Palmer's six children will now go through life without their father because of an act of violence that we believe was preventable. Our lawsuit alleges that, despite a history of fights and violent incidents at Eastern Market, the defendants moved forward with inadequate security that allowed violence to escalate into a shooting that killed a beloved father, son, brother and uncle. Mr. Palmer's family has been absolutely devastated and will never be made whole again, but they are seeking justice and accountability in hopes that no one else has to endure the type of loss that they have," read the statement attributed to Morgan and Morgan founder John Morgan and attorney David Stechow. Eastern Market has declined to comment on the lawsuit. Detroit police said a large fight broke out in Shed 6 and was briefly dispersed that day. But when two people started to act as if they would resume the fight, one of them pulled out a gun and fired it at least twice. Two guns were recovered from the area. Police officers who were in the area to direct traffic after the Detroit Lions game rushed to the scene and took one man into custody immediately. The victims were later identified as Palmer and 25-year-old Jalen Welch. One shot was fired, the bullet first struck Welch and then traveled through his body, striking Palmer. After an investigation, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced that no charges will be filed against the 40-year-old man, saying the shooter acted in self-defense. His name was not released by authorities. "It is absolutely tragic that during all the fun and merrymaking at a Lions tailgate that two lives were lost," Worthy said at the time. "The first was Mr. Welch, who was the one who first pulled out a gun and was shot by the 40-year-old, a lawful CPL holder, who was defending himself. A single shot was fired." Eastern Market canceled its Sept. 30, 2024, tailgate party in response to the incident. The market's tailgate party event series has since resumed in conjunction with selected events, with new policies that include no weapons on site, shorter time limits and assigned spots.
