CAIRO — A truck and a microbus collided on a road in Egypt on Friday, killing 19 people, officials said.
The microbus was carrying workers on a regional road in the city of Ashmoun, in the Nile Delta governorate of Menoufia, as they were heading to their jobs, according to a statement by the Labour Ministry. Three people survived the crash.
The victims, including the injured, were transferred to General Ashmoun hospital, according to local media reports.
Labour Minister Mohamed Gebran ordered authorities to take the necessary measures to disburse compensation to victims' families, sending up to 200,000 Egyptian pounds (about US$4,000) to the families of those deceased and 20,000 Egyptian pounds ($400) to each injured person.
Menoufia's governor, Ibrahim Abu Leimon. said that the cause of the crash would be urgently investigated, and he called on the transportation ministry to reassess safety measures on the regional road, according to local media outlet Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Deadly traffic collisions claim thousands of lives every year in Egypt, which has a poor transportation safety record. Speeding, bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws are the main reasons behind most of the crashes.

3rd Edmonton-area collision reporting centre slated to open next year

The south Edmonton collision reporting centre on 58 Avenue at 87A Avenue on Aug. 8, 2025. A new Edmonton-area collision reporting centre is expected to open next year. The centre in Sherwood Park is slated to open in the spring at 911 Bison Way, next to the Strathcona County RCMP headquarters. Edmonton has hosted two collision reporting centres, on the north and south sides, for the last three years in partnership with city police. Stephanie Greening, Accident Support Services International's operations manager for Western Canada, said the centres free up police officers and support staff for other work. 'If you have five-to-10-to-15 officers taking these collision reports right now, wouldn't you rather see those officers have availability out on the streets, doing investigations for major crimes?' Greening told CTV News Edmonton on Friday. A Calgary-area collision reporting centre, in Airdrie, is scheduled to open next month. With files from CTV News Edmonton's Dave Mitchell

‘What was the driver thinking?': OPP report crash on Highway 21

Highway 21 was closed for a head-on collision between Army Camp Road and Port Franks Road, south of Grand Bend, on July 10, 2025. A head-on crash in Lambton County has sent one person to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. Around 6 a.m. on Thursday, police, fire and EMS responded to Highway 21 near Army Camp Road, about 20 km south of Grand Bend. According to OPP, a vehicle traveling on Highway 21 tried to pass a transport truck in the fog, colliding with an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the vehicle attempting to pass, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and the driver of the oncoming vehicle has serious life-threatening injuries. OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said, If you wake up and it's foggy outside, pack an ample supply of patience, you're eventually going to arrive at your destination. 'I understand people don't want to be late for work, your bosses will understand, especially due to the weather conditions. If you find yourself behind a transport truck in thick fog, the best place for you is behind that transport truck... This crash didn't need to happen.... this crash was preventable,' said Sanchuk. Highway 21 remains closed between Army Camp Road and Port Franks Road, and isn't expected to reopen for several hours.
