Shillong, Aug 4 (PTI) Doctors at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) here have warned that smoking significantly increases the risk of developing a slipped disc, also known as lumbar disc herniation.
The warning came after a successful surgery was performed on a patient referred with recurrent lumbar disc herniation.
A team led by surgeon Dr Bhaskar Borgohain recently carried out a tubular microdiscectomy successfully to relieve the pressure on the S1 nerve root on a patient admitted to the hospital.
Four large fragments of the disc were removed during the minimally invasive procedure, he said.
'Research suggests that smoking is one of the risk factors for slipped discs, possibly due to damage to collagen fibres in the disc's outer ring caused by toxic hydrocarbons in cigarette smoke," Dr Borgohain said.
He added that such damage weakens the structure of the spinal discs, making them more prone to rupture or herniation, particularly in the lower back.
Doctors at NEIGRIHMS have urged the public to avoid smoking not only to reduce the risk of spinal problems but also to improve overall musculoskeletal health. PTI JOP ACD

These committees will include 10 to 20 members, depending on the population, he said, adding that only individuals with clean records and reputation — such as retired army personnel, teachers, and village headmen — will be included. Each committee will be officially notified by the local sub-divisional magistrate, and committee members will be issued special government ID cards. It will facilitate communication with the administration regarding drug-related information or anti-drug activities, he said. Villages and wards will have round-the-clock surveillance to ensure no trafficker dares to operate, he said. The committee members will also assist in drug rehabilitation efforts and help reintegrate former addicts into society, he added. Any village or ward that achieves 100 per cent drug-free status will receive formal recognition and certificates of appreciation from the government, said Mann. 'These committees will raise awareness through street plays and door-to-door campaigns, adding that schools will also conduct awareness programs for children,' he said. He said, once the app is in force, they will expand its scope. "Next will be to take it to the pharmacy level. We want to onboard every pharmacy on the app," he added. At present, the recall procedure takes two days, he said, citing the recent recall of nearly 40 lakh drugs in two days. "This too, we had made a breakthrough with the help of a software. Earlier, it used to take nearly 30 days to recall batches of failed drugs from the market," he added. The minister also said work is progressing at expected pace in bringing the private ambulances and mobile medical units under the ambit of Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act. "We will be coming out with an amendment soon," he added.

The contractual jobs span an initial two-year period, with an option for extension based on performance and further requirements. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must be between 25 and 45 years old, weigh at least 45 kg, and have a minimum height of 1.5 metres. A Class 10 pass certificate is the minimum educational requirement, along with proven proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. A valid passport is also mandatory. While 90 percent of the posts will be reserved for women, the remaining 10 percent are open to men. Preference will be given to female candidates with prior training in General Duty Assistant (GDA), Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM), General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM), Diploma in Senior Care (DSC Nursing), or Post-BSc Nursing.
