Actress Tamanna appointed KSDL's brand ambassador
Large and Medium Industries Minister M.B. Patil on Thursday announced that actress Tamannaah Bhatia has been appointed as the brand ambassador of Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Limited (KSDL). The move is aimed at expanding the global reach of the prestigious State-owned enterprise.
The minister stated that the decision was made considering the actress's wide appeal, strong digital presence, and her ability to connect with the younger generation.
Responding to objections raised by certain quarters, Minister Patil described the appointment of Tamannaah as a thoughtful and research-backed decision. She has been signed as the brand ambassador for a period of two years, for which she will be paid ₹6.2 crore.
In the financial year 2024–25, KSDL recorded an impressive turnover of ₹1,785.99 crore, out of which around ₹1,430 crore—approximately 80%—was generated from six key States: Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Maharashtra.
'Other leading celebrities such as Deepika Padukone, Rashmika Mandanna, Pooja Hegde, and Kiara Advani were also considered. However, after evaluating factors like ongoing brand endorsements, availability, and associated costs, Tamannaah was selected for her strong pan-India appeal, reasonable engagement terms, and remarkable digital reach with over 28 million followers,' Patil said.
Marketing experts felt that her persona resonates well with younger audiences and aligns with KSDL's brand values of quality, heritage, and contemporary relevance.
He further added, 'It is important to note that this endorsement is only one part of a much broader strategic transformation currently underway at KSDL.'
Highlighting KSDL's commitment to local employment, the minister pointed out that 89% of its workforce comprises Kannadigas. 'It is a matter of pride that a government enterprise like KSDL has grown to the extent of establishing a unit in Vijayapura. We are also working on improving packaging appeal to enhance the brand's value,' the Mminister added.
KSDL Chairman Appaji Nadagouda said that a strong and suitable strategy is crucial for expanding the brand in North India and global markets. Tamannaah's appointment is based purely on marketing criteria, and the government is committed to taking this 109-year-old state enterprise to even greater heights.

Maharashtra's CAP admission process now has four rounds, new rules announced
In an overhaul of the centralised admission process (CAP) for professional courses, the Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Department has announced that the number of CAP rounds will be increased from three to four starting from the upcoming academic session. The changes come ahead of the announcement of the common entrance test (CET) results, conducted by the state's CET cell for admissions to degree programs. Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil confirmed the development, stating that a formal government resolution (GR) will be issued soon. 'These reforms are similar to the changes made in the polytechnic admission process and are aimed at making the system more efficient and student-friendly,' Patil said. This decision is intended to improve flexibility and transparency in the admission process. The department has clarified that the revised rules will be implemented during the upcoming academic session. A highlight of the new structure is the auto-freezing of seats. If a candidate is allotted a college listed among their first three preferences in the second round or among the top six in the third round, the seat will be automatically frozen. Once frozen, the student must take admission to that institution and cannot participate in further rounds. Candidates will also have the chance to modify their preferences before each of the second, third, and fourth CAP rounds. This ensures that students are provided with flexibility while also maintaining fairness in seat allocation. The new policy also brings more transparency and merit-based selection into the management quota admissions. For the first time, colleges will be required to announce complete details of the available management quota seats on the official website. In terms of fees, institutions will be permitted to charge up to three times the regular tuition fee for management quota seats. For NRI quota seats, the fee can be as high as five times the standard rate. NRI candidates must submit a certificate from the income tax department, and their admission will be governed by the Foster Parent Act. The new rules also define a clear process for admission cancellations. Students wishing to cancel their admission must submit a request online. Once cancelled, the student forfeits any claim to that seat, which will then be made available in subsequent rounds. If the cancellation is completed before the specified deadline, a refund will be issued after deducting ₹1,000 from the total fee. No refunds will be granted for cancellations made after the deadline. Colleges are required to publish the list of eligible candidates, the merit list, and a detailed admission schedule on their official websites. Commenting on the reforms, Patil said, 'These changes are in line with those implemented in the polytechnic admission process and are aimed at enhancing efficiency and making the system more student-friendly.'

Sugar co-ops face govt action for loan default
MUMBAI: The state government has decided to take to task respective board of directors of 31 sugar cooperatives that were extended margin money loans (down payment) and have defaulted in paying back the first two instalments. The loans were disbursed to the cooperatives, linked to prominent politicians, in tranches ahead of the Lok Sabha election in August 2024, and thereafter in March 2025. The cumulative amount totals ₹4,355 crore. Some of the sugar factories that have taken loans are controlled by top Maharashtra leaders -- Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil (BJP), Harshavardhan Patil (NCP-SP), Shivendraraje Bhosale (BJP), Sanjay Mandalik (Shiv Sena), Hassan Mushrif (NCP), among others. The loan taken by each sugar factory is approximately between ₹40 crore and ₹300 crore. The government did not disclose who among them, or 26 others, were defaulters. People in the know of things from the government have said if the money is not recovered in a month the government will dissolve the boards and recover dues by attaching personal immovable properties of respective directors – this was the norm in August 2023, which was diluted in subsequent years, and has been reinstated now. The cash-strapped government has been compelled to take this step as it has ended up paying back instalments to the bank – ₹79 crore in the interest on loan in January -- on behalf of the factories, said a senior officer in the cooperation department. The government stood bank guarantee for the margin money loan from National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), controlled by the central government. The loan, at 9.46%, is lower than the market rate, and is given for eight years, with the actual repayment of the principal amount beginning in the third year of the disbursement. Factories are expected to pay interest on the loan for the first two years. Most have failed to pay the interest component, compelling the government to bear the burden. Explaining the government's move, the officer said, 'If things are not set right, the burden of repayment of loans in the first two years will be over ₹350 crore, which will increase with time once the repayment of the principal amount begins.' He added, strict norms were laid out following poor recovery from the factories. 'Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who is also the finance minister, finally decided it was time for hard talk,' he said. Babasaheb Patil, cooperation minister and NCP leader, said, 'We have made it mandatory for sugar factories to first pay the FRP (fair and remunerative price) and the loans from selling the sugar produced from the season which ended last month.' Patil added that the loan was not being used for the purpose it was taken – on upgradation of factories, setting up distilleries, etc. Most of it, he said, was utilised in paying salaries. 'Stricter norms will help the government to restrict non-deserving factories from availing bank guarantee from the government.' PR Patil, chairman, Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation, found the state's conditions unrealistic. 'The state cannot dissolve the board of directors and mortgage immovable properties. It will it not stand in court,' he said.
