OPEC+ countries to boost oil production by 547,000 barrels per day

Yahoo3 days ago
NEW YORK (AP) — A group of countries that are part of the OPEC+ alliance of oil-exporting countries has agreed to boost oil production, a move some believe could lower oil and gasoline prices, citing a steady global economic outlook and low oil inventories.
The group met virtually on Sunday and announced that eight of its member countries would increase oil production by 547,000 barrels per day in September.
The countries boosting output, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman, had been participating in voluntary production cuts, initially made in November 2023, which were scheduled to be phased out by September 2026. The announcement means the voluntary production cuts will end ahead of schedule.
The move follows an OPEC+ decision in July to boost production by 548,000 barrels per day in August. OPEC said the production adjustments may be paused or reversed as market conditions evolve.
When production increases, oil and gasoline prices may fall. But Brent crude oil, which is considered a global benchmark, has been trading near $70 per barrel, which could be due to a potential loss of Russian oil on the market and a large rise in crude inventories in China, according to research firm Clearview Energy Partners.
'President Trump has not obviously relented from his threat to sanction Russian energy if the Kremlin does not reach a peace deal with Ukraine as of August 7, potentially via 'secondary tariffs' on buyers,' Clearview Energy Partners said in an analyst note Sunday.
The eight countries will meet again on Sept. 7, OPEC said in a news release.

Trump's Tariff Gamble Puts America's Ties With India at Risk

President Trump has staked enormous political capital on being the one to end the war in Ukraine, even asserting that he could do so 'in 24 hours.' In perhaps his biggest gamble yet to achieve that goal, he pledged on Wednesday to punish India with tariffs of 50 percent for buying Russian oil. At stake is the relationship between the United States and an increasingly important strategic partner in Asia. India, the world's most populous democracy, and the United States, its most powerful one, have an unusual relationship. They are friendly but not close, brought together by mutual interests and shared values, especially in recent decades. On Wednesday, Mr. Trump seemed ready to ditch that relationship. He doubled already hefty tariffs on Indian exports to the United States for its steadfast refusal to stop buying oil from Russia, in an effort to pressure Russia to end the war. Mr. Trump has accused India of helping Russia finance its war on Ukraine through oil purchases; India has said it needs cheap oil to meet the energy needs of its fast-growing economy. India called the additional tariffs 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' pointing out that it was being punished for doing something — buying Russian oil at a discounted price — that other nations have done, although it didn't mention names. China is the largest buyer of Russian oil, and Turkey has also deepened its energy links with Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine, without incurring similar penalties. Analysts said Mr. Trump's pressure tactics could damage the longstanding ties between India and the United States. 'We are better off together than apart,' said Atul Keshap, a retired U.S. diplomat and president of the U.S.-India Business Council. 'The partnership forged by our elected leaders over the past 25 years is worth preserving, and has achieved considerable mutual prosperity and advanced our shared strategic interests.' Trump, Apple CEO announce $100B US manufacturing investment

President Trump and Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook announced Apple's additional $100 billion commitment to manufacturing in the US. Watch the video above to hear Trump's and Cook's remarks from the White House on Wednesday. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Yahoo Finance. This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of ensuring that iPhones sold in the United States of America also are made in America, with the massive infusion of capital. It's announcing today, Apple will also build a 250,000 square foot server manufacturing facility in Houston and invest billions of dollars to construct data centers across the country, from North Carolina to Iowa to Oregon. That's big stuff. Apple will also open a state-of-the-art manufacturing economy. It's going to be a manufacturing academy in Detroit, and that's a great place to do it, you know. Big things are happening in Michigan and Detroit. They're coming in because of what we've done with the, uh, I call it the great big beautiful bill. I added one word, great. But we have, uh, the probably the biggest, most comprehensive piece of legislation ever passed. It's going to mean, uh, unbelievable numbers of jobs, and no jobs on, think of this, uh, whether it's tips or overtime or Social Security, no tax. So no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security, no tax on overtime, and there's just a small bit of it, uh, for Apple and others businesses, we're talking about the deductions and all of the things. And actually for people that go out and buy a car, first time it's ever been done. We talk about deductions for companies, but they're going to be able to deduct interest when they borrow money to buy a car, if it's made in America. Has to be made in America. So it is amazing. One of the reasons I think I can say that Apple's coming here is the legislation we just passed with this kind of investment. Apple will also open other facilities, rare earth magnets from Texas, and build, oh, I love that you're doing this. I love that. I love that. And build a brand new rare earth recycling line in Mountain Pass, California. I know that area. That's where they have a lot of truly rare earth. That's fantastic. I love that. And Apple will help develop and manufacture semiconductors and semiconductor equipment in Texas, Utah, Arizona, and New York. For years, Americans have watched as many of our leading tech giants built their factories overseas and exported American jobs abroad. I'm glad to be here with you today, and I'm very proud to say that today we're committing an additional 100 billion to the United States, bringing our total US investment to 600 billion over the next four years. As a part of this, we're launching Apple's American Manufacturing Program. It will spur even more production right here in America for critical components used in Apple products all around the world. And we're thrilled to announce that we've already signed new agreements with 10 companies across America to do just that. Darwin Nunez will receive staggering salary hike upon Liverpool exit

Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez is officially an Al-Hillal forward after Liverpool agreed to sell the mercurial 26-year-old to the Saudi Arabian side for €53 million ($61.8 million) plus add-ons. Nunez entered the season on the same contract and wage structure as when he signed with Liverpool for an initial fee of £64.1 million ($85.5 million) from Benfica in 2022. With Al-Hillal, the 26-year-old is set to see his new contract nearly triple from around a reported £140,000-a-week ($147,000) with the Reds to £400,000-a-week ($534,000) with his new side, according to TalkSport. Per Spotrac, Nunez ranked 10th amongst the top Liverpool earners last season, behind the likes of the since-departed Trent Alexander-Arnold. He was linked to Napoli, the reigning Serie A champion, earlier in the 2025 summer window. Antonio Conte's spendthrift side ultimately decided to stay within the country for a forward, plucking Lorenzo Lucca from Udinese. Nunez will finish his Liverpool career with 40 goals in 143 competitive appearances for the side. Since his 2022 arrival, he's hit the post more times (14) than any other player in the Premier League. The Uruguayan certainly had a penchant for scoring timely winners, highlighted by his stoppage time stunners on the road against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest during the 2023/24 campaign. Nunez will join an Al-Hillal side possessing brand names from across Europea over the last half-decade, including the talented Serbian duo of striker Aleksandar Mitrovic and midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Saudi outfit has already made a big splash in the 2025 summer window, signing French international fullback Theo Hernandez from AC Milan. Liverpool has also replaced Nunez with forward Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt and may put a cherry on top of an expensive window with the further signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
