Dubai achieves 70% progress on road project linking major corridors
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of 70 per cent of the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project, which extends from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the junction with Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.
The development is part of a broader master plan for the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor, a 16 km stretch connecting Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road. This corridor serves several key residential and development zones with a combined population of over one million.
The update was shared by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, during a site inspection to review progress and ensure alignment with Dubai's infrastructure strategy.
The initiative supports Dubai's urban expansion goals by easing traffic congestion and enhancing road mobility.
The current phase of the project spans 4.6 km, with major works including a revamped Umm Suqeim–Al Barsha South intersection near Kings' School, construction of an 800-metre tunnel with four lanes in each direction, and a signalised surface-level intersection to improve traffic flow.
When complete, the corridor will connect four major arterial roads - Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road - and accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Travel time between Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road is expected to be reduced by 61 per cent, from 9.7 minutes to 3.8 minutes.
Integration with Smart Technology
The RTA is also deploying smart technologies to enhance project delivery. Drones are used to capture and analyse construction progress, while artificial intelligence tracks milestones and performance indicators, and time-lapse imaging systems provide continuous visual monitoring.
These tools have led to a 100 per cent increase in on-site visibility, a 60 per cent reduction in survey time, and a 40 per cent improvement in overall monitoring efficiency.
Completed Milestones
Phase I (2013): Covered the section between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, featuring two major bridges and three pedestrian crossings between Al Quoz and Al Barsha.
2020: A 500-metre bridge was opened at the Dubai Hills–Al Barsha South intersection, offering four lanes in each direction and serving 16,000 vehicles per hour.
The Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra Corridor is one of the RTA's key east-west traffic arteries, designed to seamlessly integrate with Dubai's north-south road network and support future growth.

SRTA launches proactive plan for 5600 trips during Eid
Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. He noted that during the Eid al-Adha holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. During peak times, buses will come every 5 minutes instead of the usual 45-minute wait. This means shorter waiting times and more convenience for everyone traveling. The authority is committed to making travel easy for people visiting family or exploring popular destinations, both within the emirate and outside it. Regular comprehensive trips The Authority has improved bus services in Sharjah City for the Eid holiday, making travel easier for everyone. They are running a total of 1,144 bus trips each day across 12 different routes, using 104 buses that connect to 543 stops around the city. Al-Othmani pointed out that these efforts are part of a plan to create a well-rounded public transport system that meets the growing need for travel during busy times like holidays. He noted that Route 22 will not be in service during the Eid holiday because the Souq Al Haraj market is closed. To make things easier for passengers, they have made some changes, including quicker arrival times and more ticket sales points at bus stations and inside buses, to minimize delays and crowding. To manage passenger flow, especially at the Jubail station, the teams have stepped up their preparations. They have increased the number of staff on duty and are providing the necessary support to ensure smooth operations. They are also allowing people to book bus tickets in advance and are keeping a close eye on how things are running to maintain a high level of service. Maritime transport During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, who is in charge of transport at the local authority, announced that there will be four daily trips. These boats will leave from the Aquarium Station in Sharjah and arrive at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, working together with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. The trips will run from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a boat leaving every two hours. Each journey will take about 35 minutes. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at the station at least 15 minutes before their departure to ensure a smooth boarding process. This service is designed to provide more transportation options for everyone and help connect different types of transport. Promoting tourism Al Jarwan shared that the Authority is working closely with the Omani transport company, Mwasalat, to run international route 203. This route connects Sharjah with Muscat, the capital of Oman, and offers two flights each day. This service is expected to encourage tourism between the two countries, especially during the Eid holidays. Passengers can board at Jubail station and travel to Al Athaiba station, making stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased online through Mwasalat Oman's website or at their service points. Public engagement Al Jarwan mentioned that during the Eid holiday, a special call center will be available 24 hours a day to help people book taxis. This includes different types of vehicles like regular taxis, family-sized cars, options for women, vehicles for those with special needs, and electric cars. You can make reservations by phone, through a smartphone app, or by visiting a website. The call center keeps an eye on all the bookings to make sure taxis arrive as fast as possible. It also welcomes feedback from the public regarding bus and taxi services, helps with reports of lost bags, and answers questions about the services offered across the emirate, including Sharjah City and other regions. He highlighted that the call center plays a vital role in connecting with the community, gathering and analyzing feedback to improve services in the future.

Dubai: RTA records violations in driver training inspection campaigns
Several violations, including poor tyre maintenance and non-compliance with training session hours, were recorded at some driver training facilities in Dubai, the Road and Transportation Authority (RTA) announced on Wednesday. RTA said a series of 'comprehensive inspection campaigns' were held across driver training facilities in the emirate for three months. 'The inspection campaigns covered 26 training facilities, during which a total of 2,391 inspections were conducted and several violations were recorded. Among the most notable violations were failure to meet the technical standards for motorcycle tyre maintenance and non-compliance with the training session durations specified by the RTA.' The inspections checked all facilities and equipment used in practical driving lessons. 'One of the key objectives of the inspection campaign is to stress the importance of regular motorcycle maintenance and the correct placement of directional signage on training tracks, as both are critical to delivering a smooth and safe training experience that meets the highest standards of safety and training quality,' Saeed Al Ramsi, director of licensing activities monitoring at RTA's Licensing Agency, said in a statement sent to Khaleej Times. 'These campaigns are part of RTA's efforts to improve service efficiency and ensure that all relevant entities comply with the applicable regulations in a way that enhances the customer experience and their trust in the quality of services delivered,' he added.

RTA set to upgrade Al Wasl Road in Dubai
In line with the directives of the wise leadership to accelerate the development of infrastructure projects and enhance the capacity of Dubai's road network, thereby improving traffic flow and keeping pace with the emirate's comprehensive development, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an integrated project to upgrade Al Wasl Road. The initiative also aims to address urban expansion, accommodate population growth, and enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors. The development spans 15 km, from the intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to the junction with 2nd December Street. It includes the upgrade of six intersections, comprising enhancements to one junction and the construction of five tunnels totalling 3,850 metres. The street will be widened from two to three lanes in each direction. The project is expected to reduce travel time along Al Wasl Road by 50% and increase capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, stated: 'Al Wasl Road Development Project forms part of a master plan developed by the RTA to upgrade the road network in the area, which also includes enhancements to Umm Suqeim and Al Safa Streets. These projects are designed with a focus on creative and aesthetic elements, incorporating dedicated pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, boulevards, and vibrant urban public spaces that promote community interaction. The plan also features decorative landscaping and the creation of dynamic urban environments. The project serves a vital district that offers a broad array of modern tourism and lifestyle destinations, including beaches, luxury hotels, fine dining venues, and residential neighbourhoods, home to over one million residents.' Al Tayer added: 'The project involves the development of Al Wasl Road from its intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to its junction with 2nd December Street, spanning a total length of 15 km. The street will be widened from two to three lanes in each direction. It also includes the upgrade of six intersections along Al Wasl Road, specifically at Al Thanya, Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif, Umm Amara, Al Orouba, and Al Safa Streets. This will be achieved through the construction of five tunnels with a total length of 3,850 metres.' He continued: 'The intersection with Al Thanya Street will undergo improvements, while a unidirectional tunnel will be constructed at the intersection with Al Manara Street. This tunnel will consist of three lanes and branch into two separate routes: two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street, and two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road to Umm Suqeim Street, with a total capacity of 4,500 vehicles per hour.'
