Mission Shakti has prevented over 1,700 child marriages: UP govt
Uttar Pradesh's flagship women-centric initiative 'Mission Shakti' has reached over 9 crore women since its launch in October 2020. Backed by coordinated efforts across departments and institutions, the campaign has completed five phases and delivered large-scale interventions aimed at women's safety, welfare, and empowerment, the state government said on Saturday.
'Through coordinated efforts, the campaign reached 9 crore women and spread awareness about safety, rights, and welfare schemes,' said Puneet Mishra, nodal officer of Mission Shakti, department of women and child welfare.
According to data shared by the government, 1,707 potential child marriages were prevented under the campaign. The Women's Helpline (1090) responded to 7.78 lakh cases, while One Stop Centres extended support in 2.10 lakh cases of violence and abuse. The Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana benefitted 23.40 lakh girls across the state.
In its infrastructure push, the campaign established 100 pink police booths and added 80 new terminals to the 1090 call centre. In urban local bodies, over 1,100 pink toilets were built across 189 municipalities to ensure better hygiene and safety for women.
'The government prosecuted 27,425 cases of crimes against women and minors, which included 11,254 cases under the POCSO Act and over 3,700 dowry death cases,' the press note stated.
In aspirational districts, over 2 lakh girls were identified and supported for holistic development. The state also recorded 84% institutional deliveries, reflecting expanded access to maternal healthcare.
According to the government, Mission Shakti's outreach was amplified through special events, awareness drives, and training sessions conducted in villages, schools, colleges, and urban wards. Departments such as Police, Health, Education, Transport, and Panchayati Raj held workshops on topics including cybercrime, domestic violence, legal rights, mental health, and financial literacy.
The campaign has involved over 30 departments, including the departments of health, and home affairs, along with contributions from social organisations and educational institutions, the officials informed.

Amravati, June 11 (UNI) Former state minister Bachu Kudu's health worsened on Wednesday on the fourth day of his ongoing hunger strike in Amravati district of Maharshtra. According to reports, his weight has dropped by 2 kg, blood pressure has fallen, and his blood sugar levels have risen, raising serious concerns about his condition. Despite medical advice to take medication, Kudu has refused full treatment. District Collector Ashish Yarikar and district Superintendent of Police Vishal Anand personally visited Kudu to persuade him to seek medical care. Following their intervention, Kudu agreed to take blood pressure medication but remains steadfast in continuing his protest. During their visit to the hunger strike site, the officials discussed Kudu's demands, which include a general loan waiver, a monthly honorarium of Rs 5,000, Rs 6,000 per month for disabled individuals, and 17 other demands. The protest has garnered widespread support across the state. Senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar reached out to Kudu via phone to inquire about his health. Additionally, MLA Rohit Pawar is scheduled to join and support the hunger strike on June 11 at Guru Kunj Mozari. Transport Minister calls for wider participation in Yogandhra-2025
Minister for Transport, Youth Affairs and Sports Mandipalli Ram Prasad Reddy on Monday called on the people to actively participate in the Yogandhra-2025 initiative and make it a grand success. The yoga campaign organised at Boyakonda Gangamma temple premises in Chowdepalle on Monday (June 9) saw the participation of District Collector Sumit Kumar, Superintendent of Police Manikantha Chandolu, and the district in-charge Minister. The yoga camp commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by the participants performing yoga asanas under the guidance of yoga masters. Highlighting that yoga has elevated India's global stature, Mr. Ramprasad Reddy said that the Yogandhra-2025 celebrations will conclude with a record-breaking mass yoga event at Ramakrishna Beach in Visakhapatnam on June 21. With an estimated participation of five lakh people, this event will be entering the Guinness World Record, he added. The Collector said that more than 5,000 yoga master trainers were deployed across the district to ensure seven yoga sessions per village secretariat. He highlighted yoga's role in combating stress and managing ailments like hypertension, diabetes, and other disorders. SP Manikantha Chandolu said that practicing yoga daily can boost one's immunity and overall health, while adding that even 30 minutes of yoga could do miracles.

Call to make Eluru a drug-free district
Eluru: District collector K Vetriselvi has called upon everyone to be a part of the goal to make Eluru a drug-free district. Along with district Superintendent of Police K Pratap Siva Kishore, she presented prizes to the winners of the two-day cricket competition organised as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan awareness programme at the Ashram Hospital playground on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, she appealed to the youth not to indulge in drugs which can ruin their bright future. If they are not addicted to drugs, they can reach a higher level in life. Awareness programmes are being conducted on the ill-effects of drug use as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. Drug use leads to serious social, mental and physical problems. Keeping this in mind, the central and state governments are undertaking various programmes under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan to combat drug abuse. Information related to drug abuse can be reported to the toll-free numbers 1972 and 14446. Along with education, the youth should also give priority to sports. The Collector said that sports provide physical and mental development and also help in staying away from addictions like drugs. Superintendent of Police Pratap Siva Kishore said that everyone should be aware of the problem of drug use. Drug use leads to an increase in the crime rate and also has a detrimental effect on the society as a whole, and in view of this, a multi-faceted movement should be taken up to solve this problem. He said that the youth should especially focus on education instead of getting involved in drugs. He said that the 'Eagle' teams and the police department are jointly conducting various programmes and inspections to inform about the ill-effects of drugs and prevent their use. He said that everyone should have sportsmanship, through which they will gain self-confidence to solve any problem in life. On this occasion, collector Vetriselvi and SP Pratap Siva Kishore presented prizes to the players of the Police team that won first place, the Judicial team that won second place, and the Revenue team that won third place in the cricket competitions. District Revenue Officer V Visveswara Rao, DSDO B Srinivasa Rao, AD of the Department of Welfare of the Differently-abled and Elderly V Ram Kumar, and others participated.
