Mizorams proximity to Golden Triangle causing inflow of drugs: CM

Aizawl, Aug 13 (PTI) Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday said that the state's close proximity to the 'Golden Triangle', a region in southeast Asia infamous for drug manufacturing, is causing an inflow of drugs. The chief minister was addressing a state-level programme on 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' (Drugs Free India Campaign) here. More than 600 students from various schools and colleges took part in the event. He said drugs must be eradicated completely as they harm society. 'Mizoram's close geographical proximity to the 'Golden Triangle' is leading to frequent inflow of drugs into the state," he said. 'Golden Triangle' refers to a mountainous region in northeastern Myanmar, northwestern Thailand and northern Laos, infamous for drug manufacturing. Lalduhoma urged all to remain vigilant and united in the fight against drugs to ensure that the Mizo society remains protected from such harmful influences. He encouraged young people to abstain from using drugs and warned that even occasional use of them is the first step towards addiction. The 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' is currently being implemented in 372 districts across the country, including all the 11 districts of Mizoram. ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat' campaign: A slew of anti-drug rallies held in Mysuru, surrounding regions

A number of anti-drug rallies have been conducted in Mysuru and surrounding regions since the last few days as part of the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat' campaign. On Wednesday, at least two such events were conducted, one in Mysuru and another in Mandya, to draw public attention to the scourge of drug addiction and substance abuse among the youth. In Mandya, Deputy Commissioner Kumar inaugurated the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan 2025' organised by the Mandya district police. He said that drug abuse has emerged as one of the biggest challenges to the nation's development, and every citizen must resolve to stay away from narcotic substances to help address this problem. Mr. Kumar emphasised that the greatest social responsibility of all is to ensure that the youth do not fall prey to drugs, and to help rehabilitate those already addicted to it. He also drew a correlation between drug addiction and an increase in crime rate, and said that a review of registered criminal incidents in the district revealed that a significant proportion of it stemmed from substance abuse. The Mandya Deputy Commissioner called upon the public to work with the police to rid society of drugs, stressing that this responsibility rests on everyone. Addressing students in particular, Mr. Kumar urged them to take it upon themselves to reform and guide those in their colleges, families, and neighbourhoods who have developed tendencies of drug abuse. Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi, in his address, observed that many young people and workers in the country have become slaves to harmful habits, thereby ruining their promising futures. The main objective of the campaign was to raise awareness in universities, higher educational institutions, and schools about the harmful effects of drug abuse. Mandya Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K. R. Nandini administered a pledge to the students to stay away from drug abuse. Hanumant Prasad, principal, Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, and others were present. Mysuru, which witnessed two rallies on Tuesday, organised by the Sarada Vilas Pharmacy College and ABVP, saw school and college children taking out a procession as part of the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan 2025' on Wednesday. The rally was organised by former corporator Suhail Baig, and the procession, which commenced from Mission Hospital circle (Dr. Zakir Hussain Circle), made its way through Sawday Road, Savoy Chowk, Meena Bazaar and culminated at St. Philomena's Church Circle. Karnataka Exhibition Authority chairperson and former mayor Ayub Khan, and others were present.

Breastfeeding reduces risk of breast cancer

Eluru: District collector K Vetriselvi said that every pregnant and lactating woman in the district should be made aware of the importance of breast milk. As part of the Breast Milk Week celebrations, the Collector unveiled a poster on the importance of breast milk at the Collectorate here on Thursday. Later, nutritious food was provided to the pregnant women. Speaking on the occasion, Collector Vetriselvi said that it is mandatory to feed the baby with breast milk immediately after birth. The immunity of breastfed babies is enhanced. Breastfeeding has benefits for the baby as well as the mother. Breastfeeding releases a natural hormone called oxytocin, which helps the mother to feel less stressed after childbirth. Mothers who breastfeed for a long time have a lower risk of breast cancer. Breast milk contains all kinds of nutrients and that breastfeeding is sufficient from the time of birth to 6 months, and there is no need to give any solid or liquid foods. Kangaroo care strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child. Anganwadi staff should inform every pregnant and lactating woman in the Anganwadi area about the importance of breastfeeding, kangaroo care to keep the baby warm in the mother's lap, and other child care methods. Anganwadi staff should ensure that ANMs are seen to prevent anaemia and malnutrition, and that immunisations are administered regularly and health check-ups are conducted. Anganwadi staff should create awareness so that husbands and in-laws can support the mother in household chores for up to 6 months after delivery. They should ensure that breastfeeding rooms are set up in bus stands, cinema halls, malls, and other public places in the district. ICDS PD P Sharda said, 'As part of the Breastfeeding Week celebrations, we are making every pregnant and lactating woman in the district aware of the importance of breast milk.' She said that there are 24 breastfeeding rooms in the district and plans are being made to set up more. CDPOs Padmavati and Tulasi, Legal Advisor Raghavamma, Anganwadi supervisors, and Anganwadi staff participated in the programme.
