Over a hundred people jabbed with syringes at French music festival
Across France, millions of people spilled out into the streets over the weekend to celebrate the annual music festival Fête de la Musique. In the French capital of Paris, authorities reported that there were three to four times as many people in public as normal.
The needle attacks involved 145 victims, including 13 cases in Paris, the French Interior Ministry told NBC News in a statement, adding that at least 12 people had been arrested.
In the northeastern French city of Metz, local police arrested two individuals, including a 'syringe attacker,' during the festival that broke all attendance records, Mayor François Grosdidier said in a post on Instagram.
'Risks are always present in wild...However, we had to deal with syringe attacks,' Grosdidier wrote.
The first syringe attack in Metz was reported at about 9:15 p.m. local time, he said, adding that the victims included 15 young women between the ages of 14 and 20. The suspected syringe attacker had been arrested and handed over the National Police for further investigations, he added.
"I hope that the investigation, particularly through the examination of his cell phone, will lead to the identification of other attackers," Grosdidier said.
French officials did not say if these were cases of 'needle spiking,' which typically see attackers inject victims with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, typically in the arm, leg or buttocks, leaving them disoriented and vulnerable to assault.
Warnings about the attacks first appeared on TikTok from social media influencer Abrège Soeur, who said in a post on Saturday that "Men are planning to attack and sting women at the Fête de la Musique on June 21st."
Soeur, who describes herself as a feminist, suggested that women in danger during the festival use "H&M" as a code.
"Approach the person and ask, 'Where's your top from?' If they answer 'H&M,' it means they need help," Soeur said. If "you are in danger, hail someone over and ask, 'Where's your top from? H&M, right?'" she added.
This year's summer music festival season in Paris has brought with it renewed fears of syringe attacks after a wave of reports in 2022. At the time, the French government put out alerts advising people to stay vigilant, go to the police, and take a toxicology test if they suspected they had been drugged by a needle prick.
More than 370 people were arrested on various charges during the festival that year, including nearly 90 in Paris. Among the 14 seriously injured festival-goers was a 17-year-old who was hospitalized from wounds to the lower abdomen, according to news agency Agence France-Presse.

He reportedly endured '10 days and nights of torture' which included sleep deprivation, extreme physical violence and the 'ingestion of toxic products'. Another streamer who was present was seen cutting the stream after trying to wake up Pormanove. Pormanove caused controversy with his live antics with fellow content creators Naruto and Safine in particular. He was seen in clips having food pushed into his mouth while he was restrained, being tackled in a room that appeared to be a basement and having objects thrown at him. Naruto and Safine were taken into custody in January this year on suspicion of violence against vulnerable people. Reports say Pormanove and another disabled influencer had been humiliated live. This was denied by both streamers. In a tribute to Pormanove, Naruto said on Instagram he had always 'dreaded the day I'd have to write these words'. They said: 'Sadly, last night, JP (Raphael Graven) left us. My brother, my sidekick, my partner, six years side by side, never letting go. I love you, my brother, and we will miss you terribly. 'I ask you all to respect his memory and not share the video of his last breath in his sleep. For his family and for us, his second family. Rest in peace, my brother, Owen.' Naruto's lawyer told AFP on Tuesday his client bore "no responsibility" for Pormanove's death.

Aberdeen swim coach sentenced for sending child sexual image
A former swim coach from Aberdeen will undertake hundreds of hours of unpaid work after he sent a child an image of his penis. Joel Valentine, 27, appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Friday to be sentenced for sending a sexually explicit picture to a 15-year-old boy, whom he knew through swimming, in November 2023. The court had previously been told that Valentine – the former owner of the Aberdeen Swimming Academy – sent the picture to the teenager on Snapchat after the boy had innocently inquired who was going to win the school's 'assistant of the year' prize. Sheriff Morag McLaughlin branded the crime as 'entirely inexplicable' and handed Valentine 200 hours of unpaid work. Defence solicitor Jenny Logan, representing Valentine during the case, said her client had now begun attending counselling sessions to deal with alcohol issues in his personal life. Noting a background report on the former swimming instructor, which she claimed was 'fairly positive', Ms Logan said the offence was 'borne through alcohol misuse'. 'He accepts that,' she added. 'He has also been struggling with his mental health.' Sheriff McLaughlin, addressing Valentine directly, said she was given 'some comfort' that social workers did not deem him a high enough risk for direct intervention. Ordering him to complete unpaid work in place of such an order, she said: 'This is otherwise, to me, an entirely inexplicable offence and you will benefit from doing some work with social work around everything that has caused you to commit that offence to make sure nothing similar happens again.' He will have one year to complete the hours. Valentine will also fall under the supervision of social workers for the next 18 months and be subject to the sexual offenders notification requirements during that period. In reply, Valentine sent a further message asking: 'You gay? You gay?' The boy then blocked Valentine on Snapchat before he was messaged again via Instagram. Valentine claimed the image was a 'stock image' that had been sent to him from another party. The teenager reported the incident to the police.
