The world's strongest currency is also super-competitive
AMID all the talk about whether the United States is keen to devalue the mighty dollar as one way to revive American manufacturing, it is worth noting that the dollar is not the world's strongest currency and has not been for decades. That title goes to the Swiss franc, and the mighty franc has done nothing to undermine Switzerland's competitiveness.
The world's richest major economy has both a strong currency and a strong manufacturing base. The Swiss franc has been the top-performing currency over the past 50 years, 25 years, 10 years and five years. It is near the top even over the past year when some of the more beleaguered currencies have staged a comeback against the dollar. Nothing can compare for durable strength.
Historic highs
Yet, Switzerland also defies the assumption that a strong currency will undermine a nation's trading prowess by making its exports uncompetitive. Its exports have risen and are near historic highs both as a share of Swiss gross domestic product (75 per cent), and as a share of global exports (near 2 per cent).
The global conversation has become unduly obsessed with currency valuations, which are just one of the factors that shape a nation's competitive position. Like Germany and Japan in their heydays, Switzerland has gained a reputation for goods and services of such high quality that the rest of the world is willing to pay a currency premium for the 'Made in Switzerland' label.
Despite its lingering reputation as a haven for illicit fortunes, the country's economy has long shown extraordinary dynamism and competitive range. For more than a decade, it has dominated a UN ranking of the most innovative economies, both for the resources it puts into innovation – for example through practical university education and research and development – and for its returns on these investments.
It generates more than US$100 in GDP per hour worked – that's more productive than any of the other 20 largest economies. Its decentralised political and economic system encourages the rise of small enterprises, which account for over 99 per cent of Swiss companies. It also has a large share of globally competitive businesses in sectors from pharmaceuticals to luxury goods.

Harvard's Growth Lab ranks Switzerland number one among major economies for the 'complexity' of its exports, a measure of the advanced skills needed to produce them. And its exports range from chocolates and watches to medicines and chemicals – belying the notion that strong currencies kill factories.
At 18 per cent of GDP, its manufacturing sector is one of the largest among developed economies. Over half its exports are 'high-tech' – more than double the US level. As advanced goods are more expensive, this has helped Switzerland keep its current account in surplus, averaging more than 4 per cent of GDP since the early 1980s.
Income from trade is recycled into significant investments abroad. The country now runs a net international investment surplus of more than 100 per cent of GDP, which helps it resist external shocks. This is the opposite of the US, with its heavy deficits in the current account and net investment.
If Switzerland has a weakness, it is a huge run-up in private debt as a share of GDP. Yet, unlike the US and many other European countries, it does not have a large population of zombie companies – which earn too little to pay even the interest on their debts.
All-weather economy
Quietly, the Swiss have built an all-weather economy. The franc has appreciated steadily whether the dollar was rising or falling, and whether the global economy was in recession or recovery. They just seem to understand how to stay competitive. In 2015, the franc surged on a shift in central bank policy and manufacturers responded by moving even more sharply to sophisticated exports, which are less sensitive to currency shifts.
Many policymakers think the east Asian 'miracles' devalued their way to prosperity. Undervalued exchange rates did help countries from South Korea to China grow their manufacturing export bases rapidly. But other factors including infrastructure investments and opening to foreign capital played a bigger role. Meanwhile, the importance of exchange rate valuations faded as they moved up the development curve.
Developed economies need to compete more on quality than on price. For them, devaluation can backfire by encouraging domestic producers to focus on making cheaper goods. The Swiss lesson for nations such as the US is that a cheap currency is no fix for a broken manufacturing sector. FINANCIAL TIMES

SEOUL/WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump and South Korea's new president Lee Jae-myung agreed to work toward a swift tariff deal in their first phone call since Lee was elected this week, Lee's office said on Friday (June 6). Trump has imposed tariffs on South Korea, a long time ally with which it has a bilateral free trade deal, and pressed it to pay more for the 28,500 US troops stationed there. Separately, Trump allies have aired concerns about Lee's more conciliatory stance towards China, Washington's main geopolitical rival. Lee, a liberal, was elected on June 3 after former conservative leader, Yoon Suk Yeol, was impeached and ousted. The future of South Korea's export-oriented economy may hinge on what kind of deal Lee can strike with Trump, with all of his country's key sectors from chips to autos and shipbuilding heavily exposed to global trade. His term began on Wednesday. "The two presidents agreed to make an effort to reach a satisfactory agreement on tariff consultations as soon as possible that both countries can be satisfied with," Lee's office said in a statement. "To this end, they decided to encourage working-level negotiations to yield tangible results." Trump invited Lee to a summit in the US and they plan to meet soon, according to a White House official. Analysts say the first opportunity for the two to meet could be at a G7 summit in Canada in mid-June. Lee's office said the two leaders also discussed the assassination attempts they both experienced last year as well as their enthusiasm for golf. Lee underwent surgery after he was stabbed in the neck by a man in January last year, while Trump was wounded in the ear by a bullet fired by a would-be assassin in July. South Korea, a major US ally and one of the first countries after Japan to engage with Washington on trade talks, agreed in late April to craft a "July package" scrapping levies before the 90-day pause on Trump's reciprocal tariffs is lifted, but progress was disrupted by the change of governments in Seoul. Lee said on the eve of the elections that "the most pressing matter is trade negotiations with the United States." Lee's camp has said, however, that they intend to seek more time to negotiate on trade with Trump. While reiterating the importance of the US-South Korea alliance, Lee has also expressed more conciliatory plans for ties with China and North Korea, singling out the importance of China as a major trading partner while indicating a reluctance to take a firm stance on security tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Mr Pei Qi, a 42-year-old English teacher from China who is pursuing a postgraduate degree at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), said he has noticed more of his students in China considering Malaysia over the US. 'Many of my students who initially planned to go to the US are now considering Malaysia for further studies. 'One of them gave up on her US application because of visa delays and uncertainty, and then applied to Monash University Malaysia and USM,' he said. Mr Pei said that the student and her mother visited Penang and were drawn to the island's safety, lifestyle and international feel. 'They were worried about whether they could get into a public university here, but the affordability and global rankings of Malaysian institutions have prompted them to apply,' he said, adding that Malaysia's strong ties with China is an important factor. 'Malaysia takes education seriously. I see effort going into improving curriculum, research and global rankings,' Mr Pei added. He recalled seeing China's content creators on Douyin (China's version of TikTok) mentioning that Malaysia has become the seventh most popular study abroad destination for students from China. Mr Pei said the United States' new policy against students from China had affected the global standing of the US. 'I see real, long-term damage to America's reputation as the world's leader,' he said. 'The global landscape has changed. The US is no longer the only option for high-quality, English-medium education. 'It's sad to lose access to the US, but it's not the end of the road.' First-year Bachelor of Arts in English student Lou Xiaoxiao, 20, said studying in the US is still a dream for many from her homeland. 'It's still the top choice for a lot of us because of its academic resources and reputation. At the moment, I can say Malaysia is more of an option,' she said. Ms Lou added that visa issues and parents' concerns about global tensions do play a role and more families are looking at safety and cost when making decisions. She feels that China's families are prioritising 'cost-effectiveness' and 'a sense of security' in their decision-making regarding their children's studies overseas. Another student, Mr Li Hehe, 25, said despite the visa crackdown, he felt most Chinese families still hope to send their children to the US, believing strongly in the value of an American education. 'I've worked in the study abroad consultancy field. Students and parents who choose the US believe in it deeply. 'Even though the US might be the most expensive option, the choice of the US often reflects a serious commitment,' said Mr Li, who is in his final year of a Bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning at USM. On May 28, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that some Chinese students would have their visas revoked, especially those studying in sensitive fields or linked to the Chinese Communist Party. China is the second-largest source of international students in the US after India. More than 270,000 students from China enrolled in American institutions in the 2023–2024 academic year, about a quarter of all international students there. USM lecturer Dr Kamaruzzaman Abdul Manan, from the School of Communication, said Malaysian universities should seize the opportunity. 'China sends more students abroad than any other country. Even a 10% to 15% drop in those heading to the US means thousands will look for other destinations,' he said. He added that Malaysia's strong education system and position in Asean made it an ideal choice for students from China. 'Having more students from China can raise a university's profile, attract funding and increase global partnerships,' he said. Buildup to a meltdown: How the Trump-Musk alliance collapsed
The long-awaited breakup between President Donald Trump and Mr Elon Musk was as personal and petty as anticipated, and yet it's a sign of something much more than a conflict between two of the world's most powerful and mercurial men. PHOTO: ERIC LEE/NYTIMES WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump was peeved. Just minutes before he walked into the Oval Office for a televised send-off for Mr Elon Musk last week, an aide had handed him a file. The papers showed that Mr Trump's nominee to run Nasa - a close associate of Mr Musk's - had donated to prominent Democrats in recent years, including some who Mr Trump was learning about for the first time. The president set his outrage aside and mustered through a cordial public farewell. But as soon as the cameras left the Oval Office, the president confronted Mr Musk. He started to read some of the donations out loud, shaking his head. This was not good, Mr Trump said. Mr Musk, who was sporting a black eye that he blamed on a punch from his young son, tried to explain. He said Mr Jared Isaacman, a billionaire entrepreneur who was set to become the next Nasa administrator, cared about getting things done. Yes, he had donated to Democrats, but so had a lot of people. Maybe it's a good thing, Mr Musk told the president - it shows that you're willing to hire people of all stripes. But Mr Trump was unmoved. He said that people don't change. These are the types of people who will turn, he said, and it won't end up being good for us. The moment of pique was a signal of the simmering tensions between the two men that would explode into the open less than a week later, upending what had been one of the most extraordinary alliances in American politics. This account of the crumbling ties between the president and Mr Musk is based on interviews with 13 people with direct knowledge of the events, all of whom asked for anonymity to describe private discussions. While the relationship had been losing steam over the past several months as Mr Musk clashed with Trump officials, people close to both men said the disagreement over Mr Isaacman accelerated the breakup. Mr Musk had been planning to exit the White House relatively quietly - before Mr Isaacman's ouster left him feeling humiliated. Now the two men, who seemed inseparable at one point, are on opposite sides. Mr Musk suggested Mr Trump should be impeached. Mr Trump has threatened to cancel government contracts with Mr Musk's companies. And in recent days, Mr Trump has been telling people close to him that he believes Mr Musk is acting 'crazy' and must be doing drugs. A tanked nomination For Mr Musk, there were few positions across the thousands in the federal government that mattered more to him than the head of Nasa, because of its critical importance to SpaceX, his rocket business. So it was of great personal benefit to Mr Musk when Mr Trump chose Mr Isaacman, who has flown to space twice with SpaceX, to oversee the agency. Mr Isaacman's donations to Democrats had not always been a problem. While Mr Trump privately told advisers that he was surprised to learn of them, he and his team had been briefed about them during the presidential transition, before Mr Isaacman's nomination, according to two people with knowledge of the events. But by May 30, when Mr Trump went through the file containing details of the donations, he clearly had changed his mind. Mr Musk barely mounted a defence of his friend. He was anxious about doing so with other people around, including Mr Sergio Gor, director of the presidential personnel office, who had clashed with Mr Musk over other staffing matters. Mr Musk believed that he would be able to talk to the president at some point after the gathering, privately. But Mr Musk never got a chance to make his case. In the hours after the Oval Office farewell, Mr Trump decided he would withdraw Mr Isaacman from consideration. Mr Musk was stunned by how fast it all happened. Mr Musk's allies have argued privately that Mr Isaacman's recent donations to Democrats were nonideological and made at the encouragement of Senator Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., a former astronaut. A spokesperson for Mr Kelly declined to comment. As Mr Musk dealt with the fallout from the tanked nomination, he spent part of the weekend outside Missoula, Montana, as a guest at 'Symposium', an event for tech executives, investors and startup founders thrown by Founders Fund, the venture capital firm founded by Peter Thiel. After spending a day in Montana, he turned his attention in earnest to assailing the top domestic priority of Mr Trump: the Republican Bill making its way through Congress that would slash taxes and steer more money to the military and immigration enforcement. Privately and publicly, Mr Musk stewed over the Bill, believing that its spending would erase the supposed savings of his Department of Government Efficiency and add to the federal deficit. Some Republican lawmakers had tried to assuage Mr Musk's fears. On June 2, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., walked the billionaire through the Bill and said that Congress would try to codify the work done by Doge. After the call, Mr Johnson told associates that he felt Mr Musk was uninformed about the legislation and the congressional process, but that he had been able to reason with the world's richest man, according to a person familiar with the conversation. On June 2 evening, Mr Musk still had concerns. He hinted at them on his social platform X, reposting a chart apparently showing the yearly increase in the national debt. 'Scary,' Mr Musk wrote as a caption. Mr Trump did not respond to Mr Musk's criticisms of the Bill and maintained a light public schedule. Meltdown The Trump-Musk alliance fully ruptured on June 5, six days after the two men put on the collegial display in the Oval Office. Mr Musk, who had largely focused his attacks on Republicans in Congress, had started directing more ire at the president. So when Mr Trump was asked about Mr Musk's comments during a meeting with Mr Friedrich Merz, the new German chancellor, the president finally let loose. He said he was 'disappointed' in Mr Musk, downplayed the billionaire's financial support for his presidential campaign and posited that Mr Musk developed 'Trump derangement syndrome' after leaving the White House. Mr Musk fired back in real time. Using X, he unleashed a torrent of attacks. He claimed there were references to the president in government documents about Jeffrey Epstein, the sex offender, and indicated his support for the president's impeachment. He also said Mr Trump's tariffs would cause a recession by the end of the year. Later, Mr Trump, using his own social media platform, threatened to cut billions of dollars in federal contracts with Mr Musk's companies. By June 5 evening, Mr Musk signalled he would be open to de-escalating the fight, while the president seemed to have little interest in an immediate reconciliation. White House officials said Mr Trump had no plans to call Mr Musk. 'President Trump is the unequivocal leader of the Republican Party, and the vast majority of the country approves of his job performance as president,' Ms Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said in a statement. 'Inflation is down, consumer confidence and wages are up, the jobs report beat expectations for the third month in a row, the border is secure and America is hotter than ever before.' A spokesperson for Mr Musk did not respond to a request for comment. White House officials said on June 6 that Mr Trump was considering selling the bright red Tesla he got in March as a show of support for Mr Musk.
