Naqvi assures UAE visa issues will be resolved soon
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has acknowledged that Pakistanis are facing difficulties in obtaining visas for the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Oman, but assured that the issues would be resolved soon.
'UAE visa rejection has become a significant issue. I am meeting with the interior minister of the UAE on July 9, and I am hopeful that we will find a solution to this,' said Naqvi while addressing a gathering at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday.
He also highlighted the government's efforts to improve the global ranking of the green passport and expressed optimism that the country's passport ranking would soon see a significant rise. "We are proud of our green passport, and in the future, it will be a source of even greater pride," he stated.
Naqvi stressed the importance of Karachi's well-being for the country's overall progress, declaring, 'If Karachi is healthy, Pakistan will be healthy.' He vowed that the federal government would do everything possible to address the city's growing challenges, especially crime and smuggling.
He also revealed that discussions are underway with NADRA to integrate criminal records into citizens' national ID cards. 'The Safe City project in Karachi is expected to significantly reduce crime rates, following the success of similar initiatives,' he added.
The minister addressed the issue of smuggling, acknowledging that while it has not been completely eradicated, Pakistan had only six coast guard boats to patrol its 1,002-kilometre coastline. However, two additional boats have been added, and further strengthening of the coast guard is planned.
He also admitted that the government had not done sufficient planning for water supply in major cities but expressed hope for positive progress in the future.
Naqvi emphasized that peaceful labour strikes are a fundamental right, but the government's primary goal is to boost the national economy, which is currently a top priority.
Naqvi further appreciated that the initial ten days of Muharram passed peacefully across the country, thanks to the crucial role played by all provinces. 'The government maintained close coordination with provincial authorities, minimising mobile network disruptions and providing relief to citizens,' he said.
In conclusion, he assured that the government would crack down on the black-market trading of dollars, aiming to stabilise the currency and improve the economy.

Despite securing the lowest tariff rates on exports to the United States in the region, Pakistan risks losing this competitive edge due to high energy costs and production inefficiencies, warned Atif Ikram Sheikh, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI). The United States has lowered its reciprocal tariff rate on Pakistani goods to 19%, compared to the 20–25% imposed on regional competitors such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, archrival India faced a 50% tariff after US President Donald Trump issued an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on goods from India on Wednesday, adding to the 25% tariffs already announced. 'The US has imposed the lowest tariff in the region on Pakistani products,' said Atif Ikram Sheikh, urging authorities to 'take full advantage' of this situation, read a statement on Thursday. However, higher production costs in Pakistan, as compared to other countries in the region, can neutralise this benefit, he warned. 'Taxes, high electricity rates and gas prices for the industry are a major obstacle to taking advantage of low tariffs,' said Sheikh, urging the government to take immediate action to resolve these issues and reduce energy prices for the industrial sector. 'A significant increase in exports, especially textiles, to the US is possible amid a reduction in production costs,' he said. The US administration struck a deal with Pakistan, in which Washington would work with Islamabad to develop the South Asian nation's oil reserves. 'We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves,' Trump wrote on social media. Islamabad described the deal as a marker of a broader partnership with Washington. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, who led the final round of talks, said there was a larger economic and strategic agreement. The US is Pakistan's biggest trade partner. 'This golden opportunity should be taken advantage of,' said President FPCCI. He said that investment in the export sector is essential, saying that Pakistan must create a conducive environment for FDI. 'Low tariffs, single-digit interest rates, sustainable policies and long-term planning are the solution to the problems,' he said.

Advanced security features introduced in passport: Minister told
ISLAMABAD: The backlog of passport applications has ended, and advanced security features have been introduced, said Immigration and Passport (I&P) Directorate Director General (DG) Mustafa Jamal Qazi on Wednesday. Qazi said this, while briefing Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal at the passport headquarters. During the visit, the federal minister toured various sections of the Passport Directorate and observed the passport production process. The DG of passports, briefed the minister on the latest advancements in passport lamination and security features. The issue of passport backlog has been eliminated, with all pending passport applications being processed efficiently, Qazi further said. He said that the directorate is providing an easy online passport service for overseas Pakistanis, so that they can access essential services remotely. Thanks to modern printing technologies and state-of-the-art offices, the passport processing time has been significantly reduced, he said. Jamal expressed interest in the incorporation of artificial intelligence in passport production. He emphasised that the timely delivery of passports and the introduction of advanced security features in line with the government's vision is a commendable step forward for Pakistan. Cut in circular debt: FPCCI leader for benefiting consumers
KARACHI: Vice President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Amaan Pracha has demanded that the benefit of the significant reduction in the power sector's circular debt be passed on to electricity consumers. He stated that there has been a reduction of Rs. 700 billion in circular debt, bringing it down from Rs. 2,300 billion to Rs. 1,600 billion. He added that the main reasons for this decrease are reduced electricity losses, improved recoveries by Discos (distribution companies), and savings from renegotiated agreements with IPPs (Independent Power Producers). Therefore, the government should significantly reduce electricity tariffs to help alleviate the financial burden on trade and industry. In addition, Amaan Pracha appreciated the decision of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to approve a technical supplementary grant for the electric vehicle subsidy, the payment of remittance scheme claims, and the provision of free electric bikes to high-performing students of public colleges under the subsidy scheme.
