Two die when helicopter strikes powerlines and crashes into a barge on the Mississippi River
Two people working on powerlines near the Mississippi River died Thursday when their helicopter hit the lines, crashed into a barge and sparked a fire that belched plumes of black smoke, officials said.
The helicopter crew was near East Alton, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of St. Louis, when it careened into the barge on the Missouri side of the river. Authorities said no other injuries were reported.
Adam Briggs was on the opposite shore when it all happened and filmed the crash scene.
'The helicopter was just working on these power lines, it hit the power line, blew up,' he said in the video as flames flashed through the rolling smoke. 'There was a pilot, there was a worker, the helicopter blew up and fell and crashed in that barge and it's exploding right now.'
'They're dead. They have to be dead,' said Briggs in shock.
A spokesperson for the power company Ameren said a contractor and its subcontractor had been repairing and replacing tower lighting and marker balls on lines.
'Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the victims' families and colleagues,' Ameren said in a statement, adding that and they will cooperate with the investigation.
The collision brought an immediate response from about a dozen agencies in Illinois and Missouri, said Kyle Gaines, a spokesperson for the St. Charles County Ambulance District.
The nearby fire department rushed by boat to the crash site and a private tug boat helped to douse the flames, said Alton Deputy Fire Chief Matt Fischer.
No one was on the barge when the helicopter smashed into it and the fire has been extinguished, the state patrol said. The river has been closed to commercial traffic.
The helicopter crashed around 11 a.m. Thursday on the Mississippi River about half a mile (800 meters) downriver from the Melvin Price Lock and Dam, said Rivers Pointe Fire District Chief Rick Pender.
Pender said federal agencies were on the way. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. The NTSB said an investigator was expected to arrive on site Friday. The helicopter, the agency said, was an MD 369, which are typically smaller.
In 2018, a helicopter crew stringing new powerlines crashed in Pennsylvania, killing two people and injuring the pilot.

Woman rescued after 300 foot plunge off side of Angeles Crest Highway
A woman was saved on Friday after she plunged 300 feet off the side of the Angeles Crest Highway, according to authorities. It happened sometime in the afternoon near Mile Marker 28 above Pasadena, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies told CBS News Los Angeles. Deputies say that they were only alerted of the crash because of an electricity crew working at the same spot in the canyon. Crew members saw her fall and called 911. "They took one of their workers and went down and were trying to help this person," said LASD Sergeant John Gilbert. When they realized they were unable to provide the help she needed, they made the call. It was a 20-person rescue operation, complicated by power lines directly over the spot where the woman's car finally came to a stop. "Some people can be there for many hours or sometimes days, without anyone knowing they were over the side," Gilbert said. After they loaded the woman into a basket in order to clear the power lines, they were able to hoist her up via helicopter, deputies said. However, while the rescue was underway, one of the rescuers suffered their own medical emergency when he was stung by a bee and had an allergic reaction. This required a second aerial hoist rescue, deputies said. "There are bees and hornets up there in the ANF, and if you're at the wrong place at the wrong time, they let you know you shouldn't be there in the worst way," Gilbert said. "These things do happen in rescue work. ... Thankfully, we were able to adapt and overcome and get everyone home safe." He credits the successful operation to a wide range of cooperating agencies, including Los Angeles County Fire, Air Rescue 5, Pasadena Police Department and Search and Rescue teams from Altadena and Montrose. Deputies said that both the woman who fell and the first responder are expected to recover from the emergencies they underwent on Friday.

Helicopter crashes into barge on Mississippi River near St. Louis, killing 2 people
Two people died when a helicopter crashed into a barge in the Mississippi River near East Alton, Illinois, north of St. Louis, on Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Cpl. Dallas Thompson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed that the two people inside the aircraft were killed and that there were no other reported injuries. The state patrol said no one was on the barge when the crash happened. The river was closed to commercial navigation following the crash. The helicopter ran into a powerline and crashed around 11 a.m. Thursday on the Mississippi River about a half-mile downriver from the Alton Dam, said Rivers Pointe Fire District Chief Rick Pender. Video provided to CBS affiliate KMOV-TV by witness Adam Briggs shows a black plume of smoke rising up from the barge. Fire, emergency medical and law enforcement personnel responded to the crash, and federal agencies were on the way, Pender said. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. The Illinois State Police Department said the Lewis and Clark Bridge coming into Illinois will be closed for an undetermined amount of time, KMOV reported. East Alton is about 20 miles north of St. Louis.
