‘He used to watch LOC: Kargil, say he would also come home wrapped in tricolour': Lt Vinay Narwal's sister remembers Pahalgam terror attack victim
Naval officer Lt Vinay Narwal was a big fan of the 2003 Bollywood movie LOC: Kargil, said his sister Srishti Narwal during a prayer meeting in Karnal Sunday. Narwal was one of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
'He (Vinay Narwal) used to watch the LOC: Kargil movie often. It was his favourite movie. He used to say, 'Srishti, a day will come when your brother will also return home wrapped in tricolour like this'. I used to scold him for saying that,' said Srishti.
Narwal and his wife Himanshi, who had got married just a week before the terror attack, were on their honeymoon in Pahalgam when terrorists shot the Naval officer dead at point blank range.
Besides Himanshi and Srishti, Narwal's father Rajesh Kumar, mother Asha Devi, grandfather Hawa Singh, their family members and several senior BJP leaders joined the prayer meeting arranged by the Narwal family at D Mangal Sen Auditorium. Himanshi and Hawa Singh saluted Vinay's portrait on the occasion.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's wife Suman Saini, Legislative Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan, and several others attended the prayer meeting.
On the occasion, Srishti recalled her relationship with Vinay and said, 'I had to carry the pyre of my brother in whose lap I grew up playing. In the last 12-13 days in this grief, our family has got support from many people. This shows people's immense love for Vinay. He was my brother. I had never dreamt that I would have to light the pyre of the man who always kept me away from the firecrackers. He was the man who could never see even a drop of tears in my eyes.'
'While I am crying today, he is nowhere near to hold me. I still can not believe that he is not among us. He loved to play pranks. Whenever he came home on holiday, he never informed our grandfather. He used to come late in the night and sleep in their room. They would only find him around when they woke up. He loved to surprise us. Today, I can not believe what happened to us. But, maybe it is God's wish,' she said.
'Today, the entire country knows Vinay by his uniform and martyrdom; we know him by heart. It feels as if somebody has amputated a part of my body,' Srishti added.
Lauding Himanshi for her courage, Suman Saini said, 'Himanshi is a very courageous daughter. I cannot not describe in words what she must be going through. I can only say that every family should have a son like Vinay Narwal. He sacrificed his life for our nation. I will call him a martyr.'
Earlier, urging people not to 'go after Muslims and Kashmiris', Himanshi prayed for 'peace' while emphasising 'justice' for her husband.
'We don't want people to go after Muslims and Kashmiris. We want peace and only peace. Of course, we want justice. The people who have wronged him should be punished,' Himanshi had said. (https:// indianexpress.com /article/cities/ chandigarh

RCB, event firm execs held as K'taka shunts out CM's aide to quell anger
Four executives, one from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and three from an event management firm, were arrested and chief minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary was ousted on Friday as the Karnataka government moved to fend off criticism over the deaths of 11 fans during chaotic celebrations for RCB's Indian Premier League (IPL) title victory earlier this week. The police arrested Nikhil Sosale, in charge of RCB's marketing and revenue — who moved the Karnataka high court against the action — and DNA Entertainment Private Limited executives Sunil Mathew, Kiran Kumar and Sumanth R. Police had booked RCB, DNA and as well as the state cricket body for culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and assault on Thursday. Another first information report (FIR) was filed against the three organisations following a complaint by Rohan Gomes , 25, who survived the chaos, which also injured 56. However, the high court restrained state police from taking coercive action against top officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). As the political backlash grew, the Congress government removed chief minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary K Govindaraj and also transferred additional director general of police (ADGP), intelligence, Hemant Nimbalkar on Friday. The government did not reveal the reasons for their removal. However, people aware of the matter said Govindaraj was removed followed criticism of his reported involvement in the event. Govindaraj denied any involvement ahead of his removal. The Opposition BJP and the JD(S) jointly lashed out at the Congress government, saying police officers were being made the 'scapegoats' for the tragedy and alleging that the entire responsibility for the incident lies with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar. Karnataka BJP general secretary P Rajeev said he has filed a police complaint seeking legal action against Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar and Home Minister G Parameshwara. Shivakumar accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of 'politicising dead bodies', as the opposition party in the state blamed the government for the mayhem. 'They (opposition) are trying to do politics over dead bodies. We are not doing it. We have do they have to target me? In what way am I responsible?' he said. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of thousands of people thronged the Chinnaswamy stadium. The RCB team landed at the HAL airport at 2.45pm, and were received by Shivakumar. The first felicitation ceremony was organised by the state government at the Vidhana Soudha around 4.30pm. The 11 fans, mainly students or young IT professionals, died after they were caught in the crush at the gates . The first deaths were reported around two ambulances were present and 1,318 policemen were deployed, the government told the high court on Thursday. In comparison, around 5,000 were deployed for the 2024 World Cup victory parade in Mumbai. The crush led to four deaths at Gate 7, two at Gate 6, one at Gate 1, and four more between Gates 17 and 21, the government told the court. At a press conference on Thursday, Siddaramaiah ordered the arrests of representatives of the organisations booked by police, announced a judicial probe and said that five police officers, including the city's top cop B Dayananda, were suspended. On Friday evening, a city court in Bengaluru sent the four arrested men to 14 days' judicial custody. The high court will hear Sosale's plea challenging his arrest on June 9. 'A few arrests have been made. Ultimately, the case has to go to CID. So before that, whatever legal formalities have to be done by our team are being done,' Bengaluru's new police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said. Gomes, 25, in his complaint, said that he reached Gate 17 after seeing social media posts by RCB indicating that the tickets will be issued at the venue and that entry would be allowed without a ticket. He also alleged that RCB publicised a victory parade in an open-top bus. Sosale's lawyers, in his petition, argued that he was detained solely on the basis of an oral directive from the chief minister, without a preliminary inquiry or investigation. 'The Petitioner's arrest is motivated and an attempt to shift the blame of the tragedy to RCSPL and its officials,' the plea said, referring to Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, the company that owns the franchise. KSCA, meanwhile, argued that it had no operational role in the event and merely rented the stadium to RCB's management company. It claimed RCB, through DNA, bore full responsibility for managing the entry and exit gates. It further alleged that the cricket body was being scapegoated to deflect criticism away from government leaders who had facilitated a separate ceremony at Vidhana Soudha earlier in the day. Granting KSCA officials interim protection from arrest till June 16, Karnataka high court judge justice SR Krishna Kumar directed that no 'precipitative action' be taken against KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, who are among the accused named in one of FIRs registered by police over the tragedy. The court however, directed the petitioners to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, and barred them from leaving its jurisdiction. (With PTI inputs)

Kashmiri man's death in Delhi: Parties seek probe
Amid allegations of foul play, the mysterious death of a Kashmir youth in Delhi earlier this week has triggered anger in the Valley with increasing demands from political parties for an impartial probe. Zubair Ahmad Bhat, 30, a resident of Ali Kadal in Srinagar, died in New Delhi under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday. His family has alleged that he had gone to Delhi for work and was assaulted in Delhi. People's Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti alleged that Bhat was subjected to custodial torture by Delhi Police. 'Zubair Ahmed Bhat didn't die under mysterious circumstances. Let me bite the bullet & state the unpleasant truth. His family claims he was picked up by Delhi Police, questioned & thrashed with rods. This 30 year old man was the sole breadwinner for his mother & siblings. When will this pattern of snuffing out the lives of innocent Kashmiris purely on suspicion end? We demand answers & accountability. @DelhiPolice @JmuKmrPolice,' Mufti wrote on X. She also met the family and said that his family members showed her the texts he had sent before death. She said: 'They showed me his last message, which said the police caught him and took his Aadhaar card. He messaged his sister and wrote, 'The police caught me because I am Kashmiri. They took my Aadhaar card, and then they beat me with sticks. I am in a hotel. May God have mercy. His family says he left Jammu for Delhi. After reaching Delhi, the police at one of the stations, I think it was Lajpat Nagar, caught Zubair, took his Aadhaar card, and beat him. The next day, when he went back to collect his Aadhaar card, they beat him again. And when he returned home, he died' is what happened to Zubair.' Congress leader and AICC chairman of media and publicity, Pawan Khera sought response of Delhi Police regarding Bhat's death. 'In the capital city, a young Kashmiri dies under mysterious circumstances and not a word of it gets discussed in mainstream media? If you don't question the authorities, obviously the authorities won't give you answers. @DelhiPolice needs to respond to questions surrounding the death of Zubair Ahmad Bhat,' he said on X. National Conference spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar sought an impartial probe. 'In this age of technology & smart policing, I fail to understand how a death could be termed mysterious. Clear the air around the death of Zubair Ahmad in Delhi @DelhiPolice. We demand an impartial, time bound probe into the incident,' Dar said. Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari said that the J&K administration should take up the matter with Delhi authorities. 'It is now the responsibility of the J&K administration to take up this matter with the authorities in Delhi to ensure that the truth behind his tragic death is fully uncovered,' Bukhari said.

Minor gang-raped 8 times in presence of mother: Uttarakhand cops
Dehradun : Days after a 37-year-old expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district leader, her boyfriend and his aide were arrested in connection with the gang rape and sexual exploitation of the woman's 13-year- old daughter, police on Friday said that the minor was gang-raped at least eight times allegedly in presence of her mother. The former BJP leader allegedly used to take her daughter on trips, during which she forced the minor to consume liquor and indulge in sexual acts. She even told her daughter that 'it was a normal way of living', a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity. 'The minor told police that she was gang-raped eight times, every time in presence of her mother. The first such incident took place inside a car in January. The abuse continued at various locations, including hotels in Agra and Vrindavan during their trips, till March. She was also assaulted in a hotel in Haridwar that was leased out in the name of the woman and her boyfriend. During their trips, the woman would force her daughter to drink liquor, following which her boyfriend and his aide gang-raped the minor in her presence,' said station house officer Kamal Mohan Singh Bhandari. 'The woman was estranged from her husband and was living separately since January,' he added. Bhandari said, 'She would tell her daughter that such acts were normal. When the minor once told the woman that she would tell her father about the abuse, she threatened to kill her.' The minor finally disclosed her ordeal to her father after months of abuse, police said, adding that the father then reported the matter to police. Based on the complaint of the minor's father, a case in this connection was registered under sections 70 (2) (gang rape), 351(3) (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (criminal act by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Pocso Act on Tuesday, police said. On Wednesday, police arrested the woman and her boyfriend in Haridwar, and his aide in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut. All three are in judicial custody, they added. 'Our detailed probe is underway. We will question the staff of the hotels at various locations where the accused stayed during their trips,' Bhandari said., The medical report also confirmed sexual exploitation of the girl, police said. On Wednesday, the BJP expelled the district leader from the party. Launching a scathing attack on the BJP, the Congress alleged that the incident exposed the 'hollowness of the BJP's slogan of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign'. 'It is a disturbing case. An impartial, high-level investigation should be carried out,' said state Congress vice president Suryakant Dhasmana. 'She was relieved of all responsibilities and posts in August 2024 for being inactive and not assuming responsibility properly. Now, she has been expelled from the party's primary membership with immediate effect,' BJP leader Ashutosh Sharma said.
