Child, 11, bitten by mountain lion outside Malibu home

Yahoo3 days ago
Authorities shot and killed a mountain lion after an 11-year-old child was reportedly bitten outside a Malibu home Sunday, officials confirmed to KTLA.
Officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lost Hills Station said deputies responded to the 32500 block of Pacific Coast Highway shortly after 5:30 p.m. on reports of the incident.
Early reports suggest that the child may have been feeding chickens on the property when the attack occurred, with officials saying the 11-year-old suffered a bite on the arm. While the extent of the child's injuries are unknown, the minor was rushed to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
A large presence of emergency crews responded to the scene, including officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, who worked to track down the animal and, eventually, shoot and kill it. DNA samples were taken from the young victim that will be tested against the mountain lion to confirm that the big cat was involved in the attack.
Last year, a 5-year-old boy was attacked by a mountain lion at Malibu Creek State Park at around 4:30 p.m. while picnicking with family members at Tapia Park.
In early July, a woman hiking the popular Gridley Trail in Ojai found herself in a tense situation when one of the big cats emerged from the bushes and began walking toward her on the trail.

Several children were playing near the family's picnic site, where at least six adults were present, when the mountain lion attacked the boy, grabbing him by the head and starting to run.
Crowds of people were able to scare the animal away before CDFW officers located the animal and euthanized it.
An experienced hiker, Cortney Rasura told KTLA that she knew not to run but instead maintained eye contact with the mountain lion and loudly shouted at it before it eventually turned and ran behind some nearby bushes.
'I was just so thankful when it ran up the hill,' she said.

Jim Harbaugh refuses to comment on NCAA penalizing University of Michigan for sign-stealing

Jim Harbaugh is refusing to comment on the NCAA's decision to fine the University of Michigan tens of millions of dollars and to suspend head coach Sherrone Moore for three games due to the sign-stealing scandal that occurred during Harbaugh's tenure at his alma mater. Harbaugh stayed mum on the Wolverines when he stepped to the podium at SoFi Stadium on Saturday night following his Los Angeles Chargers' 23-22 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams for his first interaction with the media since the NCAA's rulings were announced Friday. "Like I said to you last year, not engaging," Harbaugh said. "Not engaging." The NCAA sharply criticized Harbaugh's stewardship over the winningest program in college football when it announced the sanctions, saying it had "overwhelming" evidence of a cover-up by the Michigan staff. Harbaugh has always claimed he didn't know about the sign-stealing and scouting operation run by Connor Stalions. Stalions was given an eight-year show-cause order, restricting him from all athletically related activities during the show-cause period. He was on Harbaugh's staff until he resigned amid the scandal in November 2023. In the Netflix documentary "Untold: Sign Stealer," Stalions said he did not break any NCAA rules. Michigan only avoided a multi-year postseason ban because the NCAA decided it wasn't fair to the Wolverines' current student-athletes to penalize them for the misdeeds during Harbaugh's tenure, which culminated in a national championship in January 2024. He jumped back to the NFL two weeks later with the Chargers, and the NCAA hit him in August 2024 with a four-year show-cause order for recruiting violations. Harbaugh now faces a 10-year show-cause order following the conclusion of the four-year order, which effectively serves as a 14-year ban from college football. Moore said in a statement on Friday after the NCAA's announcement that he's "glad that this part of the process has been completed. I greatly respect the rules governing collegiate athletics and it is my intent to have our program comply with those rules at all times." Michigan has said it will appeal the NCAA's decision, claiming the body has made errors in interpreting its own bylaws while drawing conclusions that are contrary to evidence. Moore was Harbaugh's assistant for six years before getting the top job upon Harbaugh's departure. Moore will be suspended for two games this September and for the Wolverines' 2026 season opener in Germany. Note: The above video first aired on Aug. 15, 2025.

Driver in custody after crashing into Denver area sports bar; three hospitalized

Three people were taken to the hospital after a driver crashed into a sports bar just north of Denver. The crash was reported just before 1 a.m. on Sunday at the Ugly Dog Sports Cafe at 1345 Cortez St. Photos posted by the Adams County Sheriff's Office show a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on the outdoor patio area of the cafe, with windshield and front-end damage, crashed up against at least one table. The driver, who has not yet been identified, is in custody, the sheriff's office said, but the investigation has since been turned over to Colorado State Patrol. CSP did not immediately respond to a request for more information. There was also no word on the condition of the three injured people.
