Star Wars' Darth Maul had huge role in second major film and fans never realised

Star Wars has no shortage of memorable villains. Darth Vader may be the most notorious, but there's also the repugnant gangster Jabba the Hutt, bounty hunter Boba Fett, and the evil Emperor Palpatine, to mention a few.
The first instalment of the prequel trilogy - The Phantom Menace - released in 1999, introduced fans to a chilling new antagonist. Darth Maul, with his red and black face paint, crown of horns, and iconic double-bladed lightsaber, was a terrifying presence.
This role marked a significant breakthrough for Ray Park, the Scottish actor behind the menacing character. Prior to this, Park had competed in martial arts tournaments and was part of the British national wushu team.
He had also worked as a stunt double, including in 1997's Mortal Kombat Annihilation, and served as Christopher Walken's body double in 1999's Sleepy Hollow.
Park even added a few personal touches to the character. Observant viewers will notice that Maul only blinks once throughout his entire screen time in The Phantom Menace, reports the Irish Star.
While this enhances his frightening persona, it was reportedly a decision made by Park due to the discomfort caused by the red and yellow contact lenses he had to wear. Additionally, Maul has a piercing in his upper left ear - apparently because Park forgot to remove his own piercing before going into makeup.
Apart from Star Wars, Ray also landed a role in another big franchise. Just a year after The Phantom Menace, he played Toad, Magneto's agile mutant sidekick, in the first X-Men film.
In one scene, he even pays homage to his Star Wars character by wielding an iron bar similarly to his iconic lightsaber.
The epic lightsaber duel in The Phantom Menace, where Qui-Gon Jinn dies and Darth Maul is cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi, is often ranked as one of the best fights in the series, thanks to Ray's impressive acrobatic moves. He also showcased his physical skills as Toad and later as Snake Eyes in the two G.I. Joe films.
Although Darth Maul's apparent demise in The Phantom Menace was his last appearance in the prequel trilogy, animated shows later revealed that he survived, got robotic legs, and sought revenge against Kenobi.
After Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise in 2012 and announced new movies, Ray expressed interest in returning. In a 2013 interview with cinemovie.tv, he said: "I was excited about the possibility of the new Star Wars, but I didn't once think about me coming back."
Ray expressed his enthusiasm, stating: "Talking to everybody, now I'm getting excited. I'm practicing my two-sided lightsabers in hopes that I [will] be asked. I would love to do it. I would love to come back as Maul and take the top off and do the whole tattoo body and robot legs. It [would] be fun."
The opportunity to reprise his role as Maul arose with a surprise cameo in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story. Recounting the moment he was offered the part, Ray said in an interview with Forbes: "I got the phone call from Lynne Hale from Lucasfilm. And it was really nice of her, because she said to me 'Ray, we're just calling to see if you would like to do it.' And I went 'Yeah. Do you want me on the plane now?'".
In 2020, Ray provided motion capture for an animated sequence featuring Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Dave Filoni, the show's creator, revealed his thought process behind the decision to involve Ray: "I wanted this fight to be big, and it got me thinking - and I've known Ray for a while - but why don't we bring Ray in and do some motion capture? He could be Maul one more time, physically fighting."
During a rehearsal for the fight scene, Ray shared his experience of reprising the role: "It's amazing to play Darth Maul again. We've just been hitting it hard, coming up with some new stuff. It's been really nice, we're trying to do as much as we can - butterfly twists and flips and corkscrews, it'll be fun."
Ray Park, who originally played Toad in the X-Men films, didn't return for the character's later appearances, including in last year's Deadpool and Wolverine. But there's another character he's keen to revisit.
Speaking to Forbes, Ray expressed his desire to don the mask of Snake Eyes again, a fan-favourite from the G.I. Joe series. "I'm in a different state in my life now then I was before," he explained.
"I'm a lot fitter, I'm older, I'm wiser I think, and I'd like to bring that to Snake Eyes."
He also mentioned, "I was signed on for three movies, and I would like to do the third one. I'd like to finish it."

'We put plans in place, found a gorgeous little cottage in Wexford and put down a deposit, secured tenants for our home here in the UK and began to pack our whole lives into my little fiat 500 (Ollys car broke 2 weeks before the move and had to have a full new gear box… just the start of the twists in this eventful story),' Emily shared. Two weeks ahead of their before, Emily explained that they got an offer 'we just couldn't refuse.' 'As we both run remote businesses we thought… What could go wrong!? Just us… 19 wild horses, 2 border collies and Nancy and Ralphy of course,' Emily said. Noting that food shopping was ordered via click and collect every three weeks by boat, Emily joked that 'if you didn't buy your Prosecco in advance… Friday night is going to be pretty boring.' The pair resided on the island during Storm Eowyn, which Emily branded 'mad.' Likening the experience to lockdown, Emily explained that she refrained from sharing her journey online as she wanted to take time away to re-evaluate her journey in life and the next steps. Clothing sale will be 'largest Princess Diana auction ever'

An auction featuring more than 200 items will be the "largest Princess Diana auction ever", according to its director. Julien's Auctions' Princess Diana's Style And A Royal Collection live sale will take place in California on Thursday 26 June and will include clothing worn by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, with the aim of celebrating her style and preserving her legacy. Items include a silk floral printed day dress designed by Bellville Sassoon, estimated to fetch between 200,000 and 300,000 US dollars, and an embroidered evening gown, designed by Catherine Walker, with the same estimated selling price. Martin Nolan, co-founder of Julien's Auctions, told the PA news agency: "This is the largest Princess Diana auction ever. Diana herself did an auction in 1997 to raise money for charity, sadly two months before we tragically lost Diana. "So now we have over 100 items representing her amazing life and her career, and of course, she's the mum of the future king of England, Prince William, so we have really iconic outfits. "Diana was a style icon, she knew what to wear, when to wear it, what was appropriate, she knew how to send a message by what she was wearing. "She was very shy, but she knew by the items of clothing, it became sort of her uniform if you will and, of course, with all the amazing power suits you see behind me, the message she sent. "She knew how to dress when she went on a royal visit to Saudi Arabia, or the United Arab Emirates, and when she was going to a hospital, she knew to wear bright colours that sick children would feel that she was likeable, huggable, approachable, and she brought hope wherever she went." Up for auction will be a collection of clothes and artefacts from British royal history, including items that belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and other members of the royal family, some dating as far back as the 19th century. Nolan said the market for items relating to Diana had increased thanks to Netflix series The Crown. He said: " The Crown certainly has introduced Diana to a whole new younger generation, and they relate to her and they love her, and they love her style, they love her innocence, they love her sense of fun. "They love her messaging, and they love what she had to live through, the challenges she had to deal with, and she overcame them all, and so it's a success story. "Sad ending, of course, but like the younger generation loved that, and that's why Diana's prices have been impacted so much and are increasing more and more." Elizabeth Emanuel, who designed a number of items of clothing for Diana, including her wedding dress, said: "When Diana first came to us for all of these dresses, she didn't have a lot of ideas of her own, because fashion wasn't her number one subject. "She didn't really take much of an interest in it, and we were very lucky to have been involved with her at the beginning, when she was developing her own style. "And then over the years, you could see her being more and more confident in what she was wearing and knowing her own style, so we were very lucky to have been there in the formative years." Julien's Auctions held a sale of Diana's items last year, billed as the most extensive collection of Diana's personal belongings since 1997. The auction house previously sold one of Diana's gowns for 1.14 million US dollars and a pair of her shoes for 390,000 US dollars. The live auction will take place at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, California, in the US, on Thursday 26 June.

Love Island 2025: Meet the Irish contestant among cast of ‘bigger' and ‘bolder' new summer series

The 12th season of the popular reality TV dating series is set to return with a string of brand new contestants looking for love amid the drama in a villa in Majorca. Presented by Maya Jama since 2023, Love Island will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, with many of its most memorable personalities set to return for a reunion special. In its first trailer for the 2025 summer season, Jama demanded something 'bigger' and 'bolder', and promised 'more twists', 'more bombshells' and 'more drama' than ever before. Here are the contestants that have already been announced for this year... Sophie This 29-year-old 'CEO of empowerment' has one mission: 'I want women to feel beautiful and validated in themselves and feel their best self.' That's because Sophie works as a motivational speaker and author in Manchester. But despite her optimistic approach, she's only found men 'draped in red flags and 'do not cross' signs' so far. She's looking for someone who is 'fun, spontaneous, who has a lot of jokes and who is attentive.' Dejon Twenty-six-year-old Londoner Dejon is no stranger to fame, being the son of former professional footballer player Gifton Noel-Williams, who played for Watford, Stoke City and Burnley. He's met David Beckham 'and all kinds of famous people' through his dad. In the villa, the personal trainer is looking for something fairly straightforward – 'someone who is beautiful on the inside and out, looks after themselves and is healthy.' Meg Meg, a payroll specialist from Southampton, describes her love life as 'bankrupt, right now'. She's not asking for much, only that the prospective love of her life be 'tall, with a nice tan, nice eyes and a nice smile', with 'a good fashion sense' and 'a really good, funny personality that I can get on with.' The 25-year-old is optimistic about her chances in the villa, saying: 'We're going to make sales and get on that corporate ladder and be booming. Profits, profits, profits!' ADVERTISEMENT Learn more Tommy While it may appear effortless, landscape gardener Tommy, 22, takes 'hours' to do his perfectly-styled hair. He hopes he isn't 'asking for too much' but his ideal woman is 'very ambitious, with a big personality, caring, but also someone that doesn't take themselves too seriously.' His one concession is that he doesn't have a specific type in terms of looks. 'I want a bit of everything,' he says. Alima Glaswegian Alima has a very clear image in her mind of what she wants her man to look like: a Disney prince, which she describes as 'a tall man with a handsome face.' The 23-year-old wealth management client services executive has a clever trick to flirting, which filters out the guys she fancies and the ones she doesn't. 'I always ask guys on a night out to guess which country I'm originally from,' she says. 'If they get it right, they can get my number. But they never guess correctly so it works really well if you don't want to give a guy your number. I'm originally from Guinea Bissau. If they're close and I really fancy them, I'll give them my number anyway.' Ben If 23-year-old Ben's love life were a business, he says he'd be bankrupt too. 'I'd have been out of business a long time ago,' he says. 'That's exactly why I'm here.' The private-hire taxi driver is from Gloucester and describes his perfect woman as 'someone sexy, good looking, good chat, good vibes, nice teeth and good eye contact – they're all the traits I look for. Oh, and also a cute smile, I just look at you and know I can be around you all day, every day.' Megan 24-year-old Megan sometimes gets stopped in the street, but it might not be in the way you think. 'Me and my friends made a Derry Girls TikTok for Halloween and it went a bit viral around Brighton,' explains the musical theatre performer and energy broker from Dublin, who now lives in Brighton. Her ideal man may not be the conventional Love Island archetype, as she's swerving tanned and muscly bods for something a bit different. 'I love a boy that's a bit pasty, like Timothée Chalamet,' she says. 'I don't mind scrawny, or a bit of a 'dad bod'. I'm 5ft1 so any height really.' She adds: 'Someone who doesn't take themselves too seriously and has a sense of humour. If they're not bad looking, that's always a plus.' Helena Londoner Helena has been all around the world as cabin crew but prefers guys from the other end of the country. She describes her ideal type as: 'Somebody funny or Northern.' Why? 'I feel like Northern people have much more banter than Southerners,' she explains. 'If you look through my previous dating history, you'll see I clearly go for personality. You can pretty much laugh me into bed.' The 29-year-old says Maya would hire her for flirting skills 'but then quickly fire soon after'. She adds: 'It would only be a temporary contract.' Kyle Water operative, Kyle, 23, is a man of few words. Hailing from Stafford, he describes his flirting technique as follows: 'I just go with it, find something to compliment a girl on and go from there.' His perfect woman is 'someone that's fun, confident and just themselves.' Blu Construction project manager Blu appears to be older than his years as he's looking for 'someone who is family oriented, has a lot of love to give and a lot of love to receive.' He adds: 'Personality goes a long way.' The 26-year-old from London says his Spanish-language skills are a hit with the girls when flirting. 'I've got the charm to smooth things over with a girl,' he says. Shakira Hailing from Burnley, 22-year-old marketing professional Shakira hopes there'll be someone in the villa who's 'tall, charming, witty, with big arms, a good smile and just really funny'. She describes her current love life as 'booming' except there's one catch: 'They're all frogs.' She explains: 'It's a busy love life but I've not found 'the husband'. I'm looking for 'the one'. I'm looking for the ring.' Harry Harry is a man of many talents. The 30-year-old from Guildford is a gold trader, semi-professional footballer and model. He's also a body double for England footballer Declan Rice: 'When he does a shoot, any body close ups will actually be me. You'll never see my face, but you'll see my shoulder or chest, that kind of thing.' His type? 'The girl next door that makes me laugh and can hold eye contact with me. I don't think I'd go for the most obvious girl, I like a real sweet girl.' Love Island will air on ITV2 and ITVX.
