Mark Carney's anti-Trump message leads him to victory in Canada's election
Last night, an election slogan became a dance move as Mark Carney rocked out in celebration, with his elbows up.
The phrase taken from ice hockey suggests a defensive posture in which a player is also ready to fight back - a suitable metaphor for a country facing punitive tariffs and a US President who wants to annexe it.
I managed to grab a couple of words with the new Canadian leader and asked in this Trumpian world of trade wars and tirades, what his message was to the UK.
"Good luck," he replied with a grin as he held my arm in an apparent attempt to reassure, knowing more about the British economy and the pressure it faces from Trump's tariffs than any other Canadian politician.
The former Bank of England Governor then swerved a further question about what he'd say to Donald Trump, simply replying it was "time to listen".
I think he was referring to the rock band, Down with Webster, taking to the stage, but the answer may perhaps have had a second meaning when it comes to how he will deal with both the Canadian people's concerns about the cost of living and how he'll deal with the US President.
Mark Carney's carefree dancing with his British-Canadian wife, Diana Fox Carney, last night was a brief moment of levity at the end of a gruelling campaign.
His message on stage earlier hadn't deviated from that which he had given repeatedly to the Canadian people: Trump wants to break us so America can own us.
No softening of the rhetoric then, from a leader who knows all too well the economic nightmare facing his country if the US tariffs remain. This is the first election where Trump has had a direct influence on the outcome. This was a dramatic repudiation of Trump's bullying tactics, and it may not be the last time voters react to Trump's trade war.
Australia votes on Saturday, and the progressive Labour party may also benefit from an anti-Trump bump, securing another term for Anthony Albanese.
Both Albanese and Carney share the same humility and easy-going character. I met and interviewed Albanese in 2022 at his official residence, Kirribilli House in Sydney, when he was riding high on strong approval ratings.
Now, the occupant of the White House may once again sway voters towards the candidate they think can stand up to Trump rather than bow before him.

He followed up that tweet by adding: 'Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.' Moments before Musk dropped his bombshell post, Patel had spent a significant portion of his Rogan interview attempting to convince the conspiracy-peddling podcast host that Epstein did indeed commit suicide. Patel and his deputy director Dan Bongino – both of whom had previously supported the theory that Epstein was murdered in jail – have taken heavy criticismfrom right-wing influencers for now insisting that all evidence suggests Epstein killed himself. While Rogan began wondering if Patel and the FBI had footage of Epstein's island residence, the show's producer jumped in to let them both know that Musk had just flung out his allegation about Trump. Canada's prime minister Mark Carney has defended his decision to invite India's prime minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 summit in Alberta, despite Canada's federal police's conclusion that the murder of a prominent Sikh activist in British Columbia was orchestrated by the 'highest levels' of the Indian government. Carney declined to answer reporters' questions over whether he believed Modi had a role in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar – a killing on Canadian soil that shattered relations between the two countries. 'There is a legal process that is literally under way and quite advanced in Canada, and it's never appropriate to make comments with respect to those legal processes,' he said on Friday. Four Indian nationals living in Canada have been charged with Nijjar's murder. The summit, attended by key world leaders, runs from 15 to 17 June in Kananaskis, Alberta. 'For Sikhs in Canada, this is a betrayal, not just of our community, but of core Canadian values. Prime Minister Carney's decision to invite Narendra Modi, while India continues to deny any role in the assassination of Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar and refuses to cooperate with Canadian authorities, is both shameful and dangerous,' its president Danish Singh wrote in a statement. 'We would never welcome leaders from Russia, China, or Iran under such circumstances. Yet India has done far more on Canadian soil in terms of foreign interference and transnational repression, including orchestrating murders, and is being rewarded with a red carpet welcome.' Carney's decision comes as his new government looks to ease tensions with other nations feuding with Canada. Late Thursday, he posted a readout of a call with the Chinese premier Li Qiang and said there was interest on both sides to 'regularize channels of communication' amid a trade spat that has cost both sides billions through tariffs on seafood, electric vehicles, canola, pork and peas.
