Mark Carney's anti-Trump message leads him to victory in Canada's election

ITV News29-04-2025

Last night, an election slogan became a dance move as Mark Carney rocked out in celebration, with his elbows up.
The phrase taken from ice hockey suggests a defensive posture in which a player is also ready to fight back - a suitable metaphor for a country facing punitive tariffs and a US President who wants to annexe it.
I managed to grab a couple of words with the new Canadian leader and asked in this Trumpian world of trade wars and tirades, what his message was to the UK.
"Good luck," he replied with a grin as he held my arm in an apparent attempt to reassure, knowing more about the British economy and the pressure it faces from Trump's tariffs than any other Canadian politician.
The former Bank of England Governor then swerved a further question about what he'd say to Donald Trump, simply replying it was "time to listen".
I think he was referring to the rock band, Down with Webster, taking to the stage, but the answer may perhaps have had a second meaning when it comes to how he will deal with both the Canadian people's concerns about the cost of living and how he'll deal with the US President.
Mark Carney's carefree dancing with his British-Canadian wife, Diana Fox Carney, last night was a brief moment of levity at the end of a gruelling campaign.
His message on stage earlier hadn't deviated from that which he had given repeatedly to the Canadian people: Trump wants to break us so America can own us.
No softening of the rhetoric then, from a leader who knows all too well the economic nightmare facing his country if the US tariffs remain. This is the first election where Trump has had a direct influence on the outcome. This was a dramatic repudiation of Trump's bullying tactics, and it may not be the last time voters react to Trump's trade war.
Australia votes on Saturday, and the progressive Labour party may also benefit from an anti-Trump bump, securing another term for Anthony Albanese.
Both Albanese and Carney share the same humility and easy-going character. I met and interviewed Albanese in 2022 at his official residence, Kirribilli House in Sydney, when he was riding high on strong approval ratings.
Now, the occupant of the White House may once again sway voters towards the candidate they think can stand up to Trump rather than bow before him.

Kash Patel has live ‘WTF' moment on Joe Rogan as he learns of Trump vs. Musk mid-interview

FBI Director Kash Patel first learned that the world's richest man had just accused his boss of being in the so-called 'Epstein Files' while taping an episode of Joe Rogan's podcast on Thursday. Patel, who has come under fire from MAGA supporters in recent weeks for backing away from conspiracy theories about disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein now that he leads the FBI, appeared taken aback by Elon Musk's wild tweets about Donald Trump's lengthy past relationship with Epstein. 'That's way outside my lane,' Patel demurred while Rogan wondered 'what the f*ck' was going on between the president and his former 'first buddy.' With the bromance between the president and Musk – who funded Trump's campaign to the tune of a quarter-billion dollars and spearheaded DOGE's government-dismantling mission – blowing up in spectacular fashion on Thursday afternoon, Rogan interrupted his interview with Patel to break the news to the FBI chief. Roughly an hour into The Joe Rogan Experience taping on Thursday, Musk took issue with the president saying he was 'disappointed' about the Tesla CEO's ongoing criticisms about the 'Big, Beautiful Bill' that Republicans are trying to pass. Following Musk's exit from the administration last week as a 'special government employee,' the tech mogul had grown increasingly outspoken against the president's signature legislation, claiming it would 'bankrupt' the country. 'Time to drop the really big bomb,' Musk tweeted on Thursday afternoon. '@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!' He followed up that tweet by adding: 'Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.' Moments before Musk dropped his bombshell post, Patel had spent a significant portion of his Rogan interview attempting to convince the conspiracy-peddling podcast host that Epstein did indeed commit suicide. Patel and his deputy director Dan Bongino – both of whom had previously supported the theory that Epstein was murdered in jail – have taken heavy criticismfrom right-wing influencers for now insisting that all evidence suggests Epstein killed himself. While Rogan began wondering if Patel and the FBI had footage of Epstein's island residence, the show's producer jumped in to let them both know that Musk had just flung out his allegation about Trump. 'Jesus Christ,' Rogan gasped in shock. 'I'm not participating in any of that conversation between Elon and Trump,' Patel muttered. Reading from the tweets, Rogan then said 'someone should take his phone away' and that it was 'crazy' for Musk to accuse the president of being on the supposed client list of the deceased sex offender. 'How does he know? Does he know that Donald Trump's in the Epstein files? Does he have access to the Epstein files?' Rogan then asked Patel directly. 'I don't know how he would, but I'm just staying out of the Trump-Elon thing,' the FBI director shot back. 'That's way outside my lane.' As a shocked Rogan wondered 'what the f*ck are they doing,' Patel reiterated that he know his 'lane and this ain't it.' Rogan, meanwhile, expressed concern over the amount of time that Musk spends posting to the social media platform he owns. 'I understand he owns Twitter, I think it's bad for your mental health,' the podcaster concluded. 'I think posting things publicly all day and arguing with people all day is bad for you.' Beginning in the 1980s, Epstein and Trump began hanging out in the same social circles and soon became friends, partying and dining together at their palatial estates. They posed together for photographs and were 'each other's wingmen' at one point in time. 'He's a lot of fun to be with,' Trump said about Epstein in a 2002 interview. 'It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. The pair would have a falling out in 2004. According to one Trump aide, Trump banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago after he asked a young female worker for a massage. Following Epstein's 2019 arrest on sex trafficking charges, Trump said he was 'not a fan of his' while one of the president's lawyers insisted they had 'no relationship.'

Bitter Trump-Musk breakup forces allies to take sides as MAGA influencers quip Don's ‘not invited to Mars anymore'

LAWMAKERS have been forced to pick sides after President Donald Trump and Elon Musk's bromance came to a screeching halt. Democrats and Republicans are scrambling to pledge their allegiance after Musk called for Trump's impeachment and hurled unfounded accusations about the Epstein files. 7 Elon Musk's feud with President Donald Trump has left some MAGA loyalists picking sides Credit: Reuters 7 The feud erupted over Trump's 'big, beautiful bill,' which proposed stripping billions in government subsidies from Tesla Credit: AP 7 The drama unfolded when Musk disapproved of Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," calling it a "massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill." Trump said the world's richest man was furious because the bill proposes stripping billions in government subsidies from Musk's electric vehicle company Tesla. The two exchanged digital blows with searing social media posts until late Thursday night, when White House aides were said to have scheduled a call between the bitter rivals. RECONCILIATION REJECTED Musk appeared to have offered a possible olive branch when he responded to a post on X from hedge fund manager Bill Ackman. Ackman called for reconciliation, "for the benefit of our great country," and said, "We are much stronger together than apart." In a telling reply, Musk said, "You're not wrong." Speaker Mike Johnson raced to try to get Musk on the phone to negotiate a peace offering. He said they were trying to nail down a time to chat, but haven't been able to iron things out yet. But that all fell apart on Friday morning when Trump blasted Musk again and said he wasn't interested in talking anytime soon. Despite glimmers of hope, politicians and thought leaders have rushed to pick sides and share their two cents on the matter. Trump crushes hopes of 'peace talks' call with Musk as he insists Elon has 'lost his mind' after feud went nuclear Though many of them have been quick to stick to President Trump, not everyone is falling in line. TRUMP SUPPORTERS RALLY Support for Trump was immediate and forceful as allies rallied around the president. Johnson, who oversaw the passage of Trump's "big beautiful bill" in the House that prompted Musk's initial shot across the bow when he called the legislation a "disgusting abomination," was among the first to come to the president's aid. "Look, I know all of you are very concerned about [Musk's] tweets, but I think the American people are concerned about things that really matter," Johnson told reporters Thursday. How did Musk and Trump's relationship crumble? ELON Musk and Donald Trump spent Thursday launching insults on social media as their relationship quickly went sour. The Tesla owner called for Trump's impeachment as the president hit back and warned the government could end all federal contracts with Musk's companies. Here's how it went down: On Tuesday, Musk tweeted that Trump's signature "big beautiful" spending bill was a "disgusting abomination" that would add billions to the federal deficit On Thursday in the Oval Office, Trump addressed Musk's criticism of the bill and accused Musk of trying to kill it because the bill ends federal subsidies for electric vehicles Musk responded by live-posting on X as Trump spoke, initially shrugging off the president's assessment with an unbothered "Whatever," before tearing into the bill's other spending provisions Trump escalated the feud after the Oval Office meeting with multiple posts on Truth Social, saying he told Musk to leave the White House instead of continuing to work with Doge and threatening to dump Musk's federal contracts, which are worth billions Musk fired back on X by saying he was "decommissioning" the Dragon spacecraft made by SpaceX that brought the stranded Nasa astronauts back from the International Space Station in March Musk also escalated the war of words by reposting and replying "Yes" to a tweet claiming that Trump should be impeached and replaced by Vice President JD Vance Musk further fanned the flames by claiming that Trump is named in the infamous "Epstein files" and making unfounded accusations that its the reason they haven't been released to the public. "That is making their taxes low, making their economy work, making the border secure, making energy dominance a big thing again, and that's what our bill is going to do." Johnson said he supported Trump's massive tax and spending cuts bill, and called it a "historic step forward." Vice President JD Vance rushed to his bosses aid and blasted "lies the corporate media tells about President Trump." "One of the most glaring is that he's impulsive or short-tempered," he wrote. "Anyone who has seen him operate under pressure knows that's ridiculous." White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the feud was an "unfortunate episode from Elon," adding that he wasn't happy with the bill because "it does not include the policies he wanted." "As a businessman, he has a right to speak for his companies, but as president, President Trump has a responsibility to fight for this country," she told Fox News. CJ Pearson, who is the co-chair of the Republican National Committee Youth Advisory, made it clear who had his vote and confidence. "I'll be on the side of the guy that took a bullet for his country. Simple as that," he told the Daily Mail. 7 Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, slammed Musk's claims, but added that he should be respected Credit: Getty 7 White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the 'big beautiful bill' when she was asked about the feud Credit: Splash EPSTEIN CLAIMS 'RIDICULOUS' Other Republicans fumed over Musk's unfounded claim that Trump is named in files on sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and should be impeached. Leader of the House Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, Anna Paulina Luna, said the Epstein accusation was bogus. "The fact is, I do not believe that President Trump is in the Epstein files," she said. Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky who Musk supported, disagreed that Trump should be impeached but added that he still respects the Tesla CEO. "This is the language Trump speaks in. [Musk] is speaking it back to him," he said. Meanwhile, Tennessee Representative Tim Burchett argued that if Trump were in the files, it would've already be used against him politically. "Honestly, if any of that stuff was true on Trump, don't you think the Biden administration would have brought it out? I mean, that's just ridiculous," he said. There's no evidence that Trump had any involvement in Epstein's crimes. 7 Vice President JD Vance blasted the 'corporate media' for portraying Trump as short-tempered Credit: AP MAGA INFLUENCERS CAUTIOUS MAGA influencers remain divided on the feud, including Emily Wilson, known as Emily Saves America, who said that she "doesn't agree with doing this publicly and it's not a good look for us… compared to Democrats, our party at least goes for it. "We go with what we think and feel, we don't just fall in line with each other. I feel like Democrats are all shady and do everything behind closed doors and eat their own." Raquel Debono, who runs Make America Hot Again, jokingly said: "I guess Trump's not invited to Mars anymore." However, activist Robby Starbuck said MAGA is stronger "with Trump and Elon working together," and hopes the two can come together. "Elon is right to want a balanced budget and Trump is right to want his signature legislation. "Remember, our founders in America did great things, often fought and later made up. "This doesn't need to be a breakup if they let cooler heads prevail." Meanwhile, podcaster Joe Rogan, who endorsed Trump as president, called for Musk's phone to be thrown away. 7 White House aides reportedly set up a phone call between Musk and Trump to clear the air, but it fell through Credit: AP DEMOCRATS DIVIDED ON MUSK PRAISE The feud has had some in the Democratic party praising Musk, which has earned the ire of Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman. "The Dems, we've been dumping all over Musk and vandalizing Teslas or whatever, and now, suddenly, we might be more back into him," he said. Fetterman warned the party against fawning over the billionaire. "It wasn't that long ago that Tesla was like the virtue-signaling kind of accessory for Dems," he said. "I would never want to vandalize Teslas, and the 'big, beautiful bill' is wrong for America. So, from my perspective, I've just tried to be consistent through that." WHO'S STAYING QUIET Some key decision makers are keeping to themselves until tensions cool. "I'm staying out of it," Representative Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, told NBC News. "There's a good verse in Proverbs, 'Stay out of fights.' I'm staying out of this one." Representative Richard Hudson, a Republican from North Carolina, said that he has faith the feud will "blow over." When he was asked whether the two would make up, he merely shrugged.

Canada's PM faces backlash for inviting India's Narendra Modi for G7 summit

Canada's prime minister Mark Carney has defended his decision to invite India's prime minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 summit in Alberta, despite Canada's federal police's conclusion that the murder of a prominent Sikh activist in British Columbia was orchestrated by the 'highest levels' of the Indian government. Carney declined to answer reporters' questions over whether he believed Modi had a role in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar – a killing on Canadian soil that shattered relations between the two countries. 'There is a legal process that is literally under way and quite advanced in Canada, and it's never appropriate to make comments with respect to those legal processes,' he said on Friday. Four Indian nationals living in Canada have been charged with Nijjar's murder. The summit, attended by key world leaders, runs from 15 to 17 June in Kananaskis, Alberta. Carney said because India was the 'fifth largest economy in the world, the most populous country in the world and central to supply chains', he said it was important to invite the country's leader despite the continuing investigation to discuss energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals. 'I extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi and, in that context, he has accepted,' Carney said. Modi said he was glad to receive a call from Carney and congratulated the Liberal leader on his recent electoral victory. 'As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the summit,' Modi said in a statement. Canada and India expelled each other's top diplomats last year over Nijjar's politically motivated murder in the British Columbia city of Surrey. Canadian law enforcement also alleged India was involved in extortion, gang violence and intimidation. Carney's decision to invite Modi prompted an outraged response from the World Sikh Organization. 'For Sikhs in Canada, this is a betrayal, not just of our community, but of core Canadian values. Prime Minister Carney's decision to invite Narendra Modi, while India continues to deny any role in the assassination of Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar and refuses to cooperate with Canadian authorities, is both shameful and dangerous,' its president Danish Singh wrote in a statement. 'We would never welcome leaders from Russia, China, or Iran under such circumstances. Yet India has done far more on Canadian soil in terms of foreign interference and transnational repression, including orchestrating murders, and is being rewarded with a red carpet welcome.' Carney's decision comes as his new government looks to ease tensions with other nations feuding with Canada. Late Thursday, he posted a readout of a call with the Chinese premier Li Qiang and said there was interest on both sides to 'regularize channels of communication' amid a trade spat that has cost both sides billions through tariffs on seafood, electric vehicles, canola, pork and peas. In the call, the first high-level call since becoming prime minister in March, Carney said both sides were also fighting illegal production of the opioid fentanyl. Carney is also in direct talks with Donald Trump, the US president, to end a trade war between the two allies following economically damaging tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Doug Ford, the Ontario premier, told reporters the Canadian prime minister was engaged in 'deep, deep discussions' with Trump's team – a development confirmed by Canada's industry minister hours later.
