Former Ajax Amsterdam and Nice manager Francesco Farioli has been appointed head coach of Porto on a two-year contract, the Portuguese side said on Sunday.
Farioli left Ajax in May after the Dutch side missed out on a record 37th Eredivisie crown following a late season collapse, which allowed PSV Eindhoven to snatch the title on the final day.
The Italian led Nice to a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 in the 2023-24 season and has also coached Turkish sides Fatih Karagumruk and Alanyaspor.
He replaces Martin Anselmi, who departed Porto earlier this month after their group-stage exit from the Club World Cup.
Porto finished third in the Primeira Liga last season, nine points behind champions Sporting. REUTERS

Norway's second Group A win put them top of the standings with six points. Finland, who defeated Iceland in their opening game, remained on three. "We buzzed our way to three points in one way or another, but that's what counts in championships. There's a bit to work with, but we won, it helps," player of the match Graham Hansen told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. Eva Nystrom's own goal put Norway ahead after three minutes as Graham Hansen's cross into the goalmouth hit the Finland defender and slid into the net. The Norwegians were unlucky not to score again when they hit the woodwork twice within a minute, Ingrid Syrstad Engen's close-range header striking the crossbar before Finland goalkeeper Anna Koivunen tipped Vilde Boe Risa's corner onto the post. Finland equalised in the 32nd minute when midfielder Oona Siren found forward Oona Sevenius with a precise through ball. Sevenius hammered a left-foot shot into the top right corner to score her first international goal for over a year. Graham Hansen stepped up to seal the win in the 84th minute, fooling two defenders with quick dribbling as she moved in from the right and dispatched a shot in off the far post. Top stories Swipe. Getting her in the most amount of one-on-one situations is something we want," Syrstad Engen told newspaper VG. Norway, who beat Switzerland in their opening game, could have a place in the quarter-finals confirmed if the hosts beat Iceland later on Sunday, or if the match ends in a draw. Finland coach Marko Saloranta said his team did not deserve to lose. "I am very proud of how we played, it feels extremely bad," he said. Bonmati's health remains priority, Tome says ahead of Belgium game

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Spain's twice Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati is keen to start against Belgium on Monday at the Women's Euros, but manager Montse Tome is leaning on the side of caution a week after the midfielder was released from hospital after viral meningitis. The 27-year-old played the final nine minutes in the world champions' 5-0 thrashing of Portugal on Thursday, and was itching to play a bigger role. "I'm ready for 90 minutes and more," the Barcelona player said in an interview with RTVE. "You know my mentality and my ambition; if I'm healthy, I'm never going to complain." Bonmati was frustrated at spending most of the Portugal game on the bench, Tome said, stressing that her health was the main consideration. "She has a very high mental capacity. She's super focused in the tournament," Tome told reporters on Sunday. "It's a pity she was sick at the beginning. We were afraid at the beginning, when we knew what she had, but she recovered very quickly. "The other day, talking to the medical services, she played what she could play, because priority was her health. "That's the line we will follow. Aitana is available (on Monday), and we will decide what the game, the team needs and what's most suitable with all the information we have. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll will also be available against Belgium, Tome said, after being ill with what Spanish media reported was tonsillitis. "We'll decide if she'll be playing or not. I think the Belgium coach (Elisabet Gunnarsdottir) is wondering if she's playing or not, but we're not giving any additional information," Tome said. "But the positive thing is that she is improving, and that what she has is not serious." Spain, who have never won the Women's Euros but are favourites in Switzerland, top Group B, while Belgium are third having lost their opener 1-0 to Italy. REUTERS
