
Are GLP-1s a Cure for Menopausal Weight Gain?
While vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats are recurring topics in conversations about menopause, weight gain is just as pervasive: Around 60 percent of women gain weight during this transition, putting on an average of 1.5 pounds per year throughout their 40s and 50s. 'I have 16 patients a day, and usually 16 out of 16 are reporting weight gain to me,' says Tara Iyer, MD, medical director of the Menopause and Midlife Clinic at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Massachusetts. 'Many had never struggled with weight but now have gained 15 or 20 pounds.' And that will happen to women without any changes in diet or exercise. 'It's a very unfair paradigm,' says Caroline Messer, MD, a New York City–based endocrinologist. Much of that midlife weight gain tends to be concentrated in the midsection, earning the unfortunate moniker 'meno belly.'
This happens due to a combination of factors. Estrogen—which, much like the collagen in our faces, we lose at a rapid rate come midlife—has many important functions related to weight and body composition: It helps women maintain muscle mass, and it contributes to the regulation of appetite and metabolism. 'Essentially women are losing muscle, gaining fat tissue, and where we store our weight changes,' says Iyer. A drop in estrogen can lead to insulin resistance, meaning that it becomes more difficult for the body to regulate sugar, and for many women that glucose gets turned into fat.
Addressing excess weight around the midsection isn't just about vanity, it can pose a health risk: Associated metabolic complications can include fatty liver disease and hypertension, the latter of which, says Reena Bose, MD, an internal medicine and obesity medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic, increases almost 30 percent with even a 10-pound weight gain. The American Heart Association also highlights the menopause transition as a time of heightened risk for women's cardiovascular health.

GLP-1s—that is, the class of drugs that includes semaglutide, packaged in brand-name form as Ozempic and Wegovy, and tirzepatide, like Mounjaro—'act on estrogen receptors in the body, and they improve insulin resistance,' explains Judi Chervenak, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist at Montefiore with a clinical focus on menopause. They also slow GI motility, so you feel full. That last part 'can be essential because women are often simply hungrier during the menopause transition,' says Bose, adding that estrogen is also responsible for keeping the body's hunger-balancing hormones, ghrelin and leptin (which tell us when we're full), in check. But studies, like a recent one in the journal Obesity, found that GLP-1s can be a very effective reinforcement of diet and exercise.
Research is also growing about the potential benefits of combining GLP-1s with the menopausal hormone treatment (MHT) that has long been recommended, and there are new companies to support the regimen. Alloy Women's Health, an expansive digital menopause platform that connects board-certified physicians to women across the country (a boon in health care deserts), launched with estrogen creams and patches, but earlier this year they started offering GLP-1s as well. 'Women really wanted it,' says Monica Molenaar, cofounder and co-CEO of Alloy. Now 35 percent of Alloy's customers are on both a GLP-1 and hormonal treatment. Another platform, Noom, started as a digital weight-management platform and first offered semaglutide in 2023; it expanded into hormonal treatment this year.
'These drugs are addressing different problems, but they work together in the sense that they both bring down inflammation,' says Karen Mann, MD, medical director at Noom. Messer is a huge proponent of coupling the treatments (she favors low doses of tirzepatide, which often has fewer side effects than semaglutide). A recent study by the Mayo Clinic found that overweight or obese postmenopausal women using hormonal treatments and semaglutide lost about 30 percent more weight than those using semaglutide alone. Chrisandra Shufelt, MD, an internal medicine doctor specializing in women's health at the Mayo Clinic and one of the authors of the study, emphasizes that the findings don't necessarily mean that hormone therapy supercharges the effects of semaglutide, but rather that hormones help the body respond more optimally to the drugs. (A larger study is expected to be published soon.) In lay terms, it makes sense: Hot flashes, night sweats, mood shifts, joint pain, and sleep disruptions—all of that can dramatically impact your quality of life and, in turn, lead to weight gain.
There are doctors, of course, who remain conservative about prescribing GLP-1s to women who don't fit a specific set of criteria. 'We have to be careful about using them willy-nilly, like with someone, for example, who has a normal BMI and may just not be happy because of a slight increase in body weight,' says Chervenak. 'These drugs are not without risk.' There are the common side effects of GLP-1s, like gastrointestinal issues, abdominal pain, and nausea, and women should assess their risk factors with their doctor before starting any treatment.

High Noon recall warns some Celsius energy drink cans may contain vodka seltzer
Beverage brand High Noon is recalling some of its vodka seltzer packs due to some cans being mislabeled as non-alcoholic energy drinks, creating the potential for unintended alcohol consumption. In an announcement posted Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the two lots of the High Noon Beach Variety 12-packs contain cans mislabeled as "CELSIUS® ASTRO VIBE™ Energy Drink, Sparkling Blue Razz Edition" despite still being filled with the alcoholic seltzer. The affected Celsius cans will have a silver lid instead of a black one. The recalled packs were shipped to distributors in Florida, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin. Distributors also shipped products to retailers in the same states, minus Michigan and Oklahoma. The recalled packs include the retail UPC 085000040065 along with the following lot codes: And the recalled cans include the retail UPC 8 89392 00134 1 along with these lot codes, which are lasered on the bottom of the can: "The recall was initiated after High Noon discovered that a shared packaging supplier mistakenly shipped empty CELSIUS cans to High Noon," the FDA said, adding no illnesses or adverse events have been reported. Consumers are advised to dispose of the affected Celsius cans and not consume the liquid inside. They can contact High Noon consumer relations at consumerrelations@ to get refund information.

Other important people in a child's life, such as grandparents, can have a profound impact on their development. In fact, grandparents can play a vital role in reinforcing many of the values, attitudes and beliefs shaped by a child's parents. Children often look to outside sources for validation, comfort and support, and grandparents can be the primary source they look to.' She explains, 'First, it teaches children that secrets are okay to hide the truth. Secondly, it can create a lot of pressure for children to feel as if they must harbor a secret because Grandma or Grandpa told them not to tell. This can lead to feelings of shame or guilt, and ultimately may lead to acting-out behavior.' She adds that an emotionally supportive grandparent would not say this because they would want to promote an open, trusting environment and teach effective communication skills. 2. 'Big boys/girls don't cry.' Children should never hear this phrase from an adult, 'because it tells the child that it is not okay to cry and that their maturity is contingent on holding their emotions in,' Dr. Radice-Vella notes. She says that an emotionally supportive grandparent would not say this because it does not teach a child anything nor does it offer a loving, supportive space for the child to express emotions. 'It teaches them it is not okay to be sad, even though that is what they are experiencing at the moment. It can cause them to second guess their internal experience, without good evidence for doing so. Labeling emotions and internal experiences is crucial for healthy psychological functioning.' Instead, emotionally supportive grandparents would help a child label their feelings and validate the emotional process. 4. 'Stop crying.' Dr. Radice-Vella says that this phrase 'puts pressure on a child to put a stop to their feelings,' which is rarely possible to do. 'An emotionally supportive grandparent would not say this because they would want to create a safe space for the child to express their emotions, without shame or embarrassment,' she explains. 'An emotionally supportive grandparent would model what healthy emotional expression looks like and teach the child healthy, adaptive coping skills they could use in the moment.' Related: 5. 'It's not a big deal.' This statement could cause a child to question their emotional reaction to an event. 'If something upsets the child, telling them that it's not a big deal causes them to second guess their response to the situation,' Dr. Radice-Vella says. 'Over time, this can lead to a pattern of self-doubt, self-deprecation and insecurity.'On the flip side, an emotionally supportive grandparent would reassure the child that it is okay to be upset and ask how they can help them in that moment. 6. 'You're overreacting.' 'This statement implies that how a child is reacting is wrong or improper,' Dr. Radice-Vella says. Dr. Radice-Vella says that 'You're bad' or any phrase that implies something negative about a child's inherent worth should be avoided. 'When a child makes a mistake or does something wrong, it is okay to name the behavior as 'bad' or 'wrong',' she says. 'However, we must be careful not to label the child as such. To avoid it completely, emotionally supportive grandparents may focus on labeling a positive behavior instead.' According to Dr. Radice-Vella, this statement creates pressure for a child to respond in a way that is beyond their control. She adds, 'An emotionally supportive grandparent would not say this because they would want the child to feel comfortable expressing themselves as they are, without the pressure to be older or more mature than they may be ready to be.' These words aren't emotionally supportive because 'it signals to a child that they are responsible for another person's feelings, which is not the case,' Dr. Radice-Vella goes on to explain, 'Every person is entitled to feel how they feel, but one must take accountability for that feeling rather than blaming it on someone else. As a child, to hear the message that they are responsible for someone feeling a certain way, particularly a negative emotion, can lead to feelings of guilt or sadness. This statement does not model adaptive coping and essentially shifts the focus away from the person to the child.' 10. 'Hurry up.' Dr. Radice-Vella says that hurrying children can create anxiety. 'Children are naturally curious—from their eyes, the world is full of new and exciting things," she continues. "They see things in ways adults don't. When we try to hurry them through life, even small day-to-day activities, we are stifling their curiosity, imposing a false sense of urgency and reinforcing a societal message that we must constantly rush through life to get to the next thing.' 11. 'You're stupid.' It's simple: any negative comment or insult about a child is not emotionally supportive. 'Grandparents want to send messages of love, acceptance and unconditional worth that make children feel good about themselves,' Dr. Radice-Vella says. 'Critical statements or insults, especially from loved ones, can really affect how a child views themselves. The younger the child, the more impressionable they are, meaning those messages are going to become part of their internal view.'
