McDonald making change as netball league's first club sustainability officer
As LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons battle on the court, Elle McDonald is fighting the good fight off it.
The mid-courter works as the Welsh franchise's sustainability officer to help those around her make informed choices and protect the planet.
McDonald took on the role ahead of the 2025 season and has been involved across several initiatives.
'I've got a new role at Cardiff Dragons as the sustainability officer, which involves being an advocate among the players and our wider community to really make greener choices,' she said. 'And how we can take steps forward in that sustainability space.
'I have a background in teaching back at home, so it is quite different for me to have come across this role.
'But at the end of last year, I was speaking to quite a few people within our franchise and they felt really passionately about the sustainability space, and they wanted to come up with a role that would allow a player to really advocate for that.
'It is something that is important to me, but it should be important to everyone, so I am really proud to step into that space and really try and encourage not only our team, but across the league, all those small changes that can ultimately have a really big impact.'
Dragons were part of history last weekend as they and London Mavericks played the first extra-time period in Netball Super League history.
The game ended 55-55 after 60 minutes before Mavericks pulled away to take the game 72-61.
It means the team in green are still searching for their maiden win of the season and face new side Birmingham Panthers for the first time on Friday.
For McDonald, her performances on the court are fuelled by the choices she makes off it.
She added: 'As athletes, there are so many of those things that we really value, including obviously our health and wellbeing.
'Reducing those environmental toxins will make us feel mentally and physically better, but something that we are really focused on is sustainable travel.
'We are encouraging our fans to travel sustainably, whether it is catching public transport, walking, cycling, or carpooling to our events. We want to make sure we are encouraging that.
'Also, with our food choices, as athletes, that is so important for us and our performance.
'But how can we make sure we are supporting local and organic farms and reducing those transportation emissions.
'It is just a small thing that we can consider doing that will make a big impact. We've teamed up with Grassboots, which is a preloved sports gear app.
"We are hoping to build on the Cardiff Dragons community so people can sell or buy pre-loved sports equipment to help them get involved in sport, but also chose to donate any money to local charities.
'That is something we have been working on as well as some litter picks around the city.
'We are trying to make small changes when we can and hopefully influence our fan base and community to do the same.'

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS counter-suing Tottenham relating to Harry Kane's Bayern Munich move
Sir Jim Ratcliffe's car company INEOS Automotive is counter-suing Tottenham Hotspur for more than £1million. In legal documents filed to the High Court earlier this month, INEOS' lawyers have disputed Tottenham's claim from June, in which the Premier League club sued the company for £11million ($14.8m). Advertisement The legal dispute centres on the 'Official Partnership Agreement' between Tottenham and INEOS that was signed in December 2022. This agreement was intended to grant INEOS commercial sponsorship rights for almost five years, specifically relating to the 'INEOS Grenadier' brand in exchange for almost £17.5m in sponsorship fees, not including indexation. That sponsorship deal has now collapsed. Tottenham argued in their 'Particulars of Claim', filed to the High Court in June and seen by The Athletic, that they terminated the agreement on March 11 this year. They cited INEOS' failure to pay an indexation payment of almost £480,000, which was due by 16 August 2024, and a sponsorship fee of £5.1m, which was due by 1 December 2024, as well as another interest charge of almost £300,000. Tottenham's claim describes the failure to pay as a 'material breach of the agreement'. Tottenham have also claimed damages of more than £5.2m for breach of contract. INEOS has always maintained their right to terminate the agreement. In INEOS' 'Defence and Counterclaim', also seen by The Athletic, they argue that the company wrote to terminate the agreement in a letter dated December 6 2024, in effect from 30 June 2025. Their argument is that neither the indexation payment of almost £480,000 nor the sponsorship fee of £5.1m are therefore payable. INEOS further argue that Tottenham were 'not entitled to terminate the Agreement'. INEOS' counterclaim argues that Tottenham 'failed to grant' INEOS rights from 11 March 2025, when they wrote to INEOS to terminate the agreement, until 30 June 2025, 'when the Agreement terminated pursuant to the INEOS Termination Letter'. For these 112 days, INEOS has claimed damages of £1,073,972.60. The INEOS' counterclaim also makes reference to discussions between Tottenham and German car giant Audi at the time that Harry Kane was transferred from Tottenham to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023. The 'Defence and Counterclaim' starts by referring to a 'highly significant series of events' in which Tottenham 'started negotiating with a major competitor to INEOS'. The counterclaim argues that the club 'was not entitled to have discussions with a Competitor in connection with any rights which were the same as, or substantially similar to, the Rights granted to INEOS'. Advertisement The document states that, on August 3 2023, Tottenham's then-chief commercial officer Todd Kline told INEOS chairman Ashley Reed he 'had been in discussions' with Audi: 'According to Mr Kline, the discussions and/or negotiations related to a proposed transfer of the Club's player Harry Kane to the German club FC Bayern Munich.' According to the document, this led to discussions which brought about a new agreement between Tottenham and INEOS, under the terms of which INEOS had the right to terminate the agreement after its third year, provided that INEOS provided the Club with no less than six months' written notice. Battle For Eberechi Eze Has Big Implications For Arsenal And Spurs
Eberechi Eze is a man in-demand. The 27-year-old is wanted by both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur with the two North London rivals hoping to complete a deal for the England international before the end of the summer transfer window. Eze could cost as much as $80m, reflecting his match-winning quality. Last season was an excellent one for Eze who registered eight goals and eight assists in 34 Premier League appearances. He was also a key figure as Crystal Palace won the FA Cup, sensationally beating Manchester City in the final to lift the first piece of silverware in the club's 119-year history. Eze is a legend at Selhurst Park. Such a talent, however, deserves a higher platform and Eze seems destined to be granted this before the summer transfer window closes. However, it's yet to be decided whether he will be wearing an Arsenal or Spurs jersey. There's reason to believe the 27-year-old would be a good fit for both North London outfits. Arsenal has been forced into the market for a new attacker following news of Kai Havertz's knee injury. Eze is capable of playing as a number 10 or on the left wing, but his signing would free up Gabriel Martinelli to operate through the middle. He would also give the Gunners a different dimension with his dribbling ability. Spurs could also be a good fit for Eze. Thomas Frank is remoulding the Europa League winners in his own image with Tottenham already apparently stronger having pushed Paris Saint-Germain all the way in the Super Cup and beaten Burnley in the opening game of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. Frank likes his teams to attack open space at speed and this is where Eze could offer a lot. Tottenham also needs to find goals from other sources and Eze would bring plenty in this regard with his willingness to get forward and shoot from in and around the penalty area. His positivity would improve Spurs as an attacking proposition. Eze might be more of a key figure at Tottenham than Arsenal. However, at Arsenal the 27-year-old would be part of a team that is targeting the Premier League title. Spurs, on the other hand, is merely aiming to finish in the top five and put itself in a position to build on last season's triumph in the Europa League. At 27, Eze is at a critical juncture in his career. His route to the top of the English soccer has seen him progress through the lower leagues to the point he is now a proven difference-maker at Premier League level. Arsenal and Tottenham would both be lucky to have him, but only one can.
