Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS counter-suing Tottenham relating to Harry Kane's Bayern Munich move

New York Times11 hours ago
Sir Jim Ratcliffe's car company INEOS Automotive is counter-suing Tottenham Hotspur for more than £1million.
In legal documents filed to the High Court earlier this month, INEOS' lawyers have disputed Tottenham's claim from June, in which the Premier League club sued the company for £11million ($14.8m).

The legal dispute centres on the 'Official Partnership Agreement' between Tottenham and INEOS that was signed in December 2022. This agreement was intended to grant INEOS commercial sponsorship rights for almost five years, specifically relating to the 'INEOS Grenadier' brand in exchange for almost £17.5m in sponsorship fees, not including indexation. That sponsorship deal has now collapsed.
Tottenham argued in their 'Particulars of Claim', filed to the High Court in June and seen by The Athletic, that they terminated the agreement on March 11 this year. They cited INEOS' failure to pay an indexation payment of almost £480,000, which was due by 16 August 2024, and a sponsorship fee of £5.1m, which was due by 1 December 2024, as well as another interest charge of almost £300,000. Tottenham's claim describes the failure to pay as a 'material breach of the agreement'.
Tottenham have also claimed damages of more than £5.2m for breach of contract. INEOS has always maintained their right to terminate the agreement. In INEOS' 'Defence and Counterclaim', also seen by The Athletic, they argue that the company wrote to terminate the agreement in a letter dated December 6 2024, in effect from 30 June 2025.
Their argument is that neither the indexation payment of almost £480,000 nor the sponsorship fee of £5.1m are therefore payable. INEOS further argue that Tottenham were 'not entitled to terminate the Agreement'.
INEOS' counterclaim argues that Tottenham 'failed to grant' INEOS rights from 11 March 2025, when they wrote to INEOS to terminate the agreement, until 30 June 2025, 'when the Agreement terminated pursuant to the INEOS Termination Letter'. For these 112 days, INEOS has claimed damages of £1,073,972.60.
The INEOS' counterclaim also makes reference to discussions between Tottenham and German car giant Audi at the time that Harry Kane was transferred from Tottenham to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023.
The 'Defence and Counterclaim' starts by referring to a 'highly significant series of events' in which Tottenham 'started negotiating with a major competitor to INEOS'. The counterclaim argues that the club 'was not entitled to have discussions with a Competitor in connection with any rights which were the same as, or substantially similar to, the Rights granted to INEOS'.

The document states that, on August 3 2023, Tottenham's then-chief commercial officer Todd Kline told INEOS chairman Ashley Reed he 'had been in discussions' with Audi: 'According to Mr Kline, the discussions and/or negotiations related to a proposed transfer of the Club's player Harry Kane to the German club FC Bayern Munich.'
According to the document, this led to discussions which brought about a new agreement between Tottenham and INEOS, under the terms of which INEOS had the right to terminate the agreement after its third year, provided that INEOS provided the Club with no less than six months' written notice.
Tottenham Hotspur declined to comment.

Mega owners ready offer for Liverpool star

One Liverpool attacker could be on the move this summer with two mega owners ready to make an offer. All the focus is on who could be coming into the club right now. The focal point being Alexander Isak and the drama that surrounds him. 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! They are relaxed about their activity in the market so far and about the Isak situation. They're also working on other deals. Marc Guehi is one they could still get done before the transfer deadline. Meanwhile, there are also a number of deals Liverpool could complete for departing players. Among them Harvey Elliott is the most sought after player. However, there is also interest in Kostas Tsimikas. Meanwhile, another Liverpool attacker is wanted on a permanent deal. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range So, there is still a lot of moves that could be happening before the window shuts. In fact, for the first time in a while we could actually be in for a busy deadline day. It remains to be seen. One player who could make a surprise move is Lewis Koumas. It's not necessarily a surprise that he might be on the move. What is a surprise is that he could be moving on permanently from the club. That's according to a report from the Liverpool ECHO who claim that Koumas is attracting permanent interest. The report says that Birmingham City and Wrexham AFC are ready for a transfer tug of war in order to acquire the services of Koumas from Liverpool. Now while Liverpool won't want to lose Koumas on a permanent transfer as he still has a lot of potential, Birmingham's and Wrexham's interest will be intriguing enough for the Reds. Both teams have mega owners with Birmingham propped up by Tom Brady and Wrexham supported by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney. Last season, Birmingham shattered the League One transfer record for Jay Stansfield for £20m. This summer Wrexham spent £10m on Nathan Broadhead and £8m on Callum Doyle from Manchester City. Liverpool will have a price for Koumas and it will be around that figure. The ECHO claims that Liverpool value Koumas at a higher price than Bobby Clark, who joined Red Bull Salzburg for £10m last season. The Reds are very good at selling players on for a profit and if Birmingham or Wrexham come in with an offer for Koumas as the ECHO claim they are preparing to do, it will be difficult to refuse. Especially if it's in excess of £10m, something both team is capable of paying given their financial backing. For that price, Liverpool will be making a very healthy profit on a player who has a lot of potential but who doesn't have a clear pathway into the first team at the moment.

Government borrowing less than expected in July in boost for Reeves

Government borrowing in the UK slowed to a lower-than-expected £1.1 billion in July, providing some relief for Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the run-up to the autumn budget. The Office for National Statistics said the figure, which was £2.3 billion less than the same month a year earlier, is the lowest July borrowing figure for three years. It came after a rise in self-assessed income tax and national insurance payments helped increase tax receipts for the month. July borrowing was lower than the £2 billion figure predicted by a consensus of economists. Borrowing for the first four months of the financial year stood at £60 billion, £6.7 billion more than during the same period last year. ONS deputy director for public sector finances Rob Doody said: 'Borrowing this July was £2.3 billion down on the same month last year and was the lowest July figure for three years. 'This reflects strong increases in tax and national insurance receipts. 'However, in the first four months of the financial year as a whole, borrowing was over £6 billion higher than in the same period in 2024.' The figures come after warnings the Chancellor may need to raise taxes again in the budget in order to plug a black hole of up to £51 billion in the public finances. Chief secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones said: 'We're investing in our public services and modernising the state, to improve outcomes and reduce costs in the medium term. 'Far too much taxpayer money is spent on interest payments for the longstanding national debt. 'That's why we're driving down government borrowing over the course of the parliament – so working people don't have to foot the bill and we can invest in better schools, hospitals and services for working families.'

Sonny Aljofree: Man United loanee goes from strength to strength

Manchester United loanees were again in action on Wednesday night in League Two. To follow how all the United loaned players are faring, click this page. Sonny Aljofree The centre back started on the right of a back three, as he so often did for Accrington Stanley last season. He has had a mixed start to life at Notts County, being subbed off after only 56 minutes last weekend, Aljofree made a much bigger impression in this game however, scoring his first goal for his new club. The 20-year-old managed an impressive three goals for Accrington last season and once again showed his ability in front of goal, as he scored their second in a 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town. After a well-worked corner found its way into the box, Aljofree controlled the ball and poked it into the bottom corner, showing almost a striker's instinct in the box. He was also impressive in his defensive duties, making four clearances and winning all his ground duels. The youngster did lose his only aerial battle and made an error leading to a shot from the opposition. Aljofree was also positive on the ball, completing 82% of his pass attempts. He will next be in action when The Magpies host Bromley on Saturday. Elyh Harrison The United keeper started for Shrewsbury and actually conceded the goal against his fellow academy starlet. He did manage to make four saves but he also conceded four goals in the loss. Harrison did make one high claim and completed 76% of his passes. His best stop was also a diving effort to his left that kept out a long range curling shot in the first half. Unfortunately, he did make one error which led to a goal. He was at fault as he failed to hold onto a low cross from out wide and spilt the ball into the path of Matt Dennis, who made no mistake, slotting in the opener after just seven minutes. The United academy keeper will hope to bounce back on Saturday when the Shrews travel to Swindon Town. online polls Follow us on Bluesky: @
