64 MBBS interns suspended at Telangana private medical college for protesting non-payment of stipend
The suspension order, issued on July 3, lists the names of 64 interns and states that the action is based on a disciplinary committee's report. 'The following interns of the institute are suspended from their duties for a period of one week with effect from July 3 to July 10. They have to resume duties on July 11,' the notice reads.
The interns at the college agitated for more than two months, alleging that despite a 2023 Government Order (G.O.) mandating a stipend of ₹25,906 per month for MBBS interns across both government and private medical colleges in Telangana, CAIMS has been paying only ₹2,000 per month. A revised G.O. issued on June 28, 2025 further increased the stipend to ₹29,792, but students say the new amount is also not being honoured.
The suspension comes in the wake of a protest organised on July 1, National Doctors Day, when a group of MBBS interns staged a peaceful protest on campus. The college management reportedly called in the police, leading to a scuffle. 'We have videos that clearly show the police being rude and aggressive with students who were protesting peacefully,' said one of the suspended interns.
Speaking to The Hindu, another intern said, 'Anyone who tries to raise their voice individually is threatened with academic retaliation which would make us ineligible for NEET-PG. So most of us remain silent. The suspension is a way to crush our collective protest.'
Attempts by The Hindu to reach S.A. Asaim, principal of CAIMS, for comment went unanswered.
In response to the incident, the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA) has extended support to the protesting interns and condemned both the suspension and alleged police aggression.
In a statement, JUDA said, 'A group of young doctors engaged in peaceful protest to raise legitimate demands for basic rights and minimum stipends were reportedly subjected to verbal abuse, manhandling, intimidation, and threats by a police officer on campus. The harassment continued with college management summoning students, using abusive language, and ordering suspensions.'
JUDA has urged the Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narsimha to intervene demanding immediate revocation of the suspensions, and disciplinary action against both the police officials and the college administration for their alleged role in harassing students.
The issue of non-payment of stipend is not limited to CAIMS alone. Similar complaints have emerged from MBBS interns at several other private medical colleges across Telangana.

A Delhi court on Saturday declared United Kingdom-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari a fugitive economic offender in a case pertaining to tax evasion and money laundering, reported The Indian Express. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal of Tis Hazari court on an application moved by the Enforcement Directorate under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, according to The Hindu. It will enable the Enforcement Directorate to confiscate Bhandari's assets worth crores of rupees. Bhandari is accused of defrauding the Indian income tax authorities between July 1, 2015, and February 7, 2017, by submitting two tax returns in which he deliberately hid details about his foreign assets and foreign income. As a resident of India at the time, the 63-year-old was obligated to pay tax on all his global assets and income. In 2016, Bhandari fled India for London, despite a lookout notice against him. In October 2016, a case was registered against him under the Official Secrets Act after confidential defence ministry documents were recovered from his residence during an Income Tax department raid. The Enforcement Directorate had told a Delhi court in April that a court in the UK has rejected its appeal for Bhandari's extradition. In its application to declare the arms dealer a fugitive economic offender, the central agency claimed that the UK court's order had no bearing on Indian proceedings against Bhandari, reported ANI. Bhandari opposed the application, stating that his stay in London is legal, as the London High Court had refused his extradition. His counsel, Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, claimed that the Enforcement Directorate's plea was unclear, improperly filed, and did not meet the legal standards under the Fugitive Offenders Act. On Saturday, the court stated it was 'satisfied that Bhandari, against whom an warrant of arrest has been issued…has left India so as to avoid criminal prosecution', reported The Indian Express. 'Further, this court is satisfied that the total value of the schedule offence is `100 crore or more,' said Aggarwal. He added that the 'extradition attempt may have failed, but it will not make the accused an angel or immune to prosecution for the violation of Indian laws'. Bhandari has alleged that he had faced 'undue harassment and pressure' from several enforcement agencies to 'compel him to give false statements against the political opponents of the government'. He fled India due to this 'harassment', he claimed. Besides tax evasion, Bhandari is also one of the accused in a case of alleged corruption in the procurement of Pilatus trainer aircraft in 2009. In June 2019, the Central Bureau of Investigation had filed a case against Bhandari and unknown officials of the Indian Air Force, Defence Ministry and Switzerland-based Pilatus Aircraft.

Two killed in Karol Bagh mall blaze
Two men died in a massive fire that broke out inside a shopping mall in central Delhi's Karol Bagh, the police said on Saturday. The blaze started on the second floor of the four-storey Vishal Mega Mart at 6.44 p.m. on Friday. Thirteen fire tenders and 90 firefighters were rushed to the spot to douse the flames, said DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan, adding that the blaze was so severe that cooling operations continued until early morning on Saturday. The officer said a short circuit on the second floor could have caused the fire that later spread to other floors, but a detailed probe to ascertain the cause is under way. He added that there were at least 93 people — 23 employees and 70 customers — in the mall at the time of the incident. The deceased were identified as Dhirender Pratap, 25, a resident of Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, who was at the mall in search of a job, and Pawan Gautam, 30, a married IT professional and resident of Aligarh in U.P., who was shopping at the mall. The body of Pratap, who is suspected to have died of asphyxiation, was recovered from a lift. 'The body of the other victim was charred beyond recognition. It was identified by Gautam's friends who had reached the mall looking for him,' said a senior police officer. Pratap's family alleged laxity in the rescue operations. 'How come they did not check the lifts for people? They turned off the [mall's] power supply and left him to die,' alleged his brother, Vikram. 'Please save me' Mr. Vikram told The Hindu that his brother had sent him several messages pleading to be rescued. 'At 6.51 p.m., he sent a message on WhatsApp about a fire breaking out at the mall he was visiting. Dhirender said he was stuck in a lift and pleaded with me to save him,' he said. 'Saas phul rahi hai, kuch karo (I am out of breath, do something),' read a message. In response, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said it had immediately pressed into service the required manpower and fire engines to extinguish the flames and rescue those trapped inside. 'We received the call at 6.44 p.m., shortly after which our team reached the scene. It was difficult to enter the complex because the fire was spreading fast due to combustible items like groceries and clothes. It was around 2 a.m. that a body was found inside a lift,' said DFS Assistant Divisional Officer Ravi Nath. He added that the close proximity of buildings in the Karol Bagh market posed a challenge to firefighting operations. He said this made it difficult for fire tenders to reach the spot, contain the blaze, and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings. Case registered The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS, including those pertaining to negligence. 'We are examining if safety protocols such as functional fire exits, extinguishers, and alarms were in place at the time of the fire,' said an officer.
