SCBAP rejects Indus canal plan, calls for fair water sharing
The Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBAP) has strongly opposed the construction of six new canals from the Indus River, warning that the project could intensify inter-provincial tensions and worsen already dire water shortages in Sindh.
In its sixth meeting of the 27th Executive Committee, held at the SCBAP registry branch in Lahore, the committee passed a series of resolutions addressing key national concerns, including water distribution, regional security, and political unrest.
The committee unanimously disapproved of the proposed extraction, calling it a potential flashpoint between Punjab and Sindh.
It urged the government to focus on reducing water wastage rather than building new infrastructure that could disrupt the fragile balance of existing resources.
'Instead of creating six new canals, comprehensive efforts should be made to minimise water wastage,' the committee stated, emphasising that equitable access to water for local farmers, particularly small landholders (harries), must be prioritised.
The committee also called for strict action against long-standing power groups and feuds that have monopolised water usage.
It demanded a nationwide crackdown on individuals and entities involved in water theft, calling such actions a major obstacle to fair distribution.
Turning to internal security, the SCBAP expressed serious concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).
While welcoming the recent announcement to end the BNP-Mengal sit-in, the committee stressed that the grievances behind such protests must be addressed through sustained political engagement.
The committee commended the efforts of SCBAP President Mian Muhammad Rauf Atta, who has led a political initiative to build national consensus around the challenges in Balochistan.
Members encouraged him to continue holding meetings with key stakeholders to develop long-term solutions.
'While progress has been made, much more remains to be done,' the committee said. 'Political negotiations and discussions remain the most viable path to achieving peace and national stability.'
The committee also recognised the role of the federal government and other stakeholders in addressing Balochistan's concerns, but emphasised that further action is needed to resolve long-standing structural issues through inclusive dialogue.
The SCBAP's resolutions reflect growing calls within Pakistan's legal and civil society communities for transparent governance, equitable resource distribution, and political reconciliation in marginalised regions.
Earlier, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has issued a strong warning to the federal government, stating that the controversial canal projects could endanger the federation's unity.
He demanded that the federal authorities withdraw the proposed canal initiatives or risk losing PPP's support in the ruling coalition.

Sindh govt schedules ‘Grand musical show' for tomorrow
KARACHI: The Sindh government has finalised arrangements for a grand musical show scheduled for Aug 13. A meeting in this regard was held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner East, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting reviewed in detail the preparations and arrangements for the event. He said PPP leadership, the Sindh chief minister and cabinet members wanted such children to be part of the celebrations as they deserved special attention and should feel that the country and the occasion were equally theirs. Regarding security, the senior minister said that all requirements should be strictly met and that maximum Rangers personnel be deployed to ensure the public could enjoy Independence Day celebrations in a peaceful environment. He added that the grand show on Aug 13 was a gift from the Sindh government to the public on Independence Day, and expressed the hope that citizens of Karachi and other participants would spend a safe, pleasant and memorable evening. During the briefing, the Deputy Commissioner East said the event would have a seating capacity of 27,000, of which 10,000 seats would be reserved for families. He added that three buses and special entry passes would be arranged for children with disabilities to facilitate their access to the venue. Security officials informed the meeting that a two-tier security arrangement would be in place at the stadium. Bilawal attends concluding ceremony of Urs of Bhittai
HYDERABAD: Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, attended the concluding ceremony of the 282nd annual Urs of the great Sufi poet, Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (RA). On the occasion, he visited the shrine, offered Fateha, and laid a ceremonial Chaadar. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also visited the shrine of Hazrat Shah Habib, the father of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (RA), where he offered Fateha, and later listened to Shah Jo Raag in the courtyard of the shrine. Afterwards, Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari participated as the chief guest in the awards ceremony held at the HT Sorly Hall in Bhitt Shah, where he distributed awards to individuals who had shown outstanding performance in various fields. Addressing the ceremony, he said it was an honour for him that his family has, for generations, maintained devotion to the shrine of Bhitt Shah. He added that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and President Asif Ali Zardari have all been followers of Shah Latif's message. Bilawal said Pakistan has never initiated a war but has always ended it. He further stated that 'every citizen and youth of the country defended the homeland by taking the frontline on social media.' He said 'India attacked our water and the Indus River to target our centuries-old history and culture, but we responded to Modi's threats before the entire world.' Bilawal made it clear that 'while we desire peace, if war is imposed upon us, its declaration will be made from the land of Shah Latif.' Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, addressing the ceremony, said that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's participation was a matter of great joy for them. He said 'this relationship is historic — 64 years ago, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto came here and laid the foundation of the Cultural Centre, while Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto attended the 250th Urs along with her father and delivered a historic speech in Sindhi. Recalling excerpts from that speech, the CM said 'Mohtarma urged the youth towards education and hard work and had the Ganj Sharif published at her own expense and sent to all universities.' Syed Murad Ali Shah said Shaheed Mohtarma had expressed the wish to establish a Centre of Excellence, which President Asif Ali Zardari fulfilled in the form of the Sufi University. He further said 'this year's Independence Day holds a special significance because Pakistan, through Bunyan al-Marsoos, defeated India, and this victory is being celebrated under the title Battle for Truth, in which the Urs of Shah Latif has also been adorned in the same spirit.' At the concluding ceremony, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari presented awards to Dr Ali Akbar Dhakan (for the English translation of Shah Latif's poetry), the best Shah jo Raagi Haji Sher Muhammad Nizamani, best singer Mumtaz Lashari, best storyteller (Sugharr) Faqir Fayaz Hussain Mahesar, best instrumentalist Shahid Ali, best composer Faqir Ghulam Rasool, and folk singers Mai Sanon and Mai Sarhai. Posthumous Latif Awards were also conferred on Shams-ul-Ulama Mirza Qaleech Baig and Ustad Gulzar Ali Khan. Bilawal attends Bhittai Urs, vows to defend Indus
The Pakistan Peoples Party's Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has equated the diversion of the Indus river's water away from Pakistan as an attack on the history, culture and civilization of the country particularly Sindh. "If Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces an attack on Indus, he attacks our history, our culture and our civilization," he accentuate in his speech delivered at the concluding ceremony of the three-day urs celebrations of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai in Bhit Shah, Matiari district, on Monday. He referred to the Indus as the singular major water source for the entire country and said the Indus valley civilization has remained connected with the river for aeons. He believed that not only the people of Pakistan but even those in India have been opposing such an attack. "We have fought wars in the past but the Indus was never attacked and no one even thought of building dams or canals on the river." The PPP's chairman said by announcing water project on the river, Modi has issued a direct threat to 250 million Pakistanis that he would stop their water. He recalled that during his delegation level visits to the foreign countries they raised this water aggression to expose the ferocious plans of the Modi government. He recalled that the water aggression started as a reaction to Indian forces' defeat at the hands of Pakistan's armed forces in May this year. He described it as a historic attack and a blatant violation of the Indus River Treaty because, historically, Sindh has commanded the biggest right on the Indus. Bilawal said whenever Sindhu river came under an attack the people of Sindh courageously came to the forefront to protect the river. "The people of Pakistan have the strength to confront Modi in the event of war," he asserted, warning the neighbouring country that yet another war may end up with Pakistan taking back all its six rivers from India. Alluding to the battle between the two neighbouring countries in May this year, he maintained that Pakistan had not initiated that because the country believed in finding peaceful solutions to the conflicts. According to him, Pakistan's diplomats in the foreign lands also spoke about peace while those of India were adamant on war. He said India attacked Pakistan in the dark of the night yet that country and its forces faced defeat. "The way the armed forces, especially the air force responded to the Indian attack is historic." He also appreciated the country's citizens for fighting a battle on social media to expose Modi government before the globally community and the country's diplomats for contending Pakistan's case in the global capitals. Talking about his family's devotion to Bhitai, he stated that he felt honoured to be attending the urs celebrations for a second time. He recalled that his grandfather former Prime Minister and PPP's founding Chairman Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, his mother and former PM and PPP's chairperson Benazir Bhutto and his father President Asif Ali Zardari had also visited the shrine. Bilawal later distributed Lateef awards among the best performing artists. He also visited Bhitai's shrine to pay his respects and listened to the musical rendition of Shah Jo Ragis. Earlier, the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also addressed the awards ceremony.
