Crown Point man charged in second domestic violence case this year

Chicago Tribune14-07-2025
A Crown Point man was charged with his second domestic violence case this year.
Joseph I. Miyake, 37, was charged July 3 with two counts of domestic battery.
He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
His lawyer Russell Brown did not respond to a request for comment Friday.
When Crown Point police responded to Miyake's home on the 4800 block of W. 92nd Ave. on July 1 after a 911 call, he eventually admitted he broke a vase with a baseball bat, according to charging documents.
His wife said he smashed a Google Home device after they started arguing.
Then, he dragged her 6-year-old son by his shirt toward the door and told him, 'get out.' The boy said afterwards his neck hurt.
The woman said Miyake took a baseball bat and destroyed a vase on the kitchen counter. A broken piece flew off and hit her near her eye.
In handcuffs, Miyake collapsed momentarily outside. He was taken to the hospital then transported to jail.
Court filings show his wife filed for divorce the next day — July 2.
In the earlier case, he was charged June 6 with three counts of domestic battery and one count of strangulation for an incident on Feb. 17.
A charging affidavit states Miyake's wife called police. He pulled and twisted her arm, trying to grab her cellphone. He slapped her, then choked her from behind, charges allege.
She got away, then grabbed his cell off the bed and locked herself in the nearby bathroom. He took a power drill and took the doorknob off.
Officers saw red marks on her neck, elbow and wrist, plus other marks on her right hand from another incident.
A different son, 12, told officers that Miyake shoved him aside when he went to check on his mom.
A man with the same name, birthday and address as Miyake is listed as a Highland family law and civil attorney.
His firm didn't return a request for comment Friday.
Both trials are scheduled in October.
A special prosecutor, former Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill, is prosecuting both cases. He was not immediately available for comment Monday.
Four women — former state Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon and then-statehouse staffers Niki DaSilva, Samantha Lozano, Gabrielle McLemore — dropped a lawsuit in December against Hill, accusing him of drunkenly groping them during a post-statehouse session wrap party at an Indianapolis bar in 2018.

Sad family detail as Jack Silvagni 'all-but certain' for AFL club switch

The Silvagni name is synonymous is Carlton, but it looks like that might be coming to a sad end. Collingwood have reportedly offered Jack Silvagni a four-contract, and is reporting he's "all-but certainly played his last game in navy blue." Details emerged earlier this month that Collingwood had expressed interest in Silvagni, who is an unrestricted free agent if he doesn't re-sign with Carlton. The Magpies are said to be keen on the 27-year-old defender, who could be the perfect replacement for veteran premiership hero Jeremy Howe. On Monday night, The Age reported that Collingwood have offered Silvagni a four-year deal - the same contract length the Blues have offered. Interestingly, the Pies are also talking the same money as Carlton - in the mid-$600,000 per season. The report states: "Multiple sources at clubs, and those close to Silvagni, suggested it was unlikely he and Carlton would be able to mend their relationship and extend his time at the Blues into 2026." Reporter Sam McLure later elaborated on 'Footy Classified' on Channel 9, saying: "I'd be very surprised if he's playing in a Carlton jumper [next year]. 'The interesting thing here though, is that if he was to leave Carlton and play for Collingwood next year, it wouldn't be about the money. It paints a reasonably dark picture about, I guess, the frustrations in the playing group at Carlton right now. 'I will say I wouldn't be surprised if another club came late after seeing how this is transpiring, because finding solid key defenders at that sort of market rate is quite rare. So maybe a Sydney or a Western Bulldogs or someone that needs a key defender. 'A few weeks for this one to play out. Not certain he'll be playing in a Collingwood jumper Round 1 next year, but I'd be very surprised if he's playing in a Carlton jumper, so it seems like he is on the way out.' Sad situation for Silvagni family at Carlton McLure stated it would be a "sad end" to the Silvagni family's ties with Carlton. Jack has played 121 games for the club since 2016, but has been sidelined since Round 16 with injury. Father Stephen played 312 games for the club, while late grandfather Sergio featured in 239 games for the Blues. Collectively they've played the second-most games in VFL/AFL history for a grandfather-father-son trio, only behind John Sr, John Jr and Josh Kennedy (695). While Stephen remains a club legend, he had a bitter falling out with the club in 2019 and has never returned in an official capacity. He was removed as the club's list manager that year and has since taken up the same role at St Kilda. He refused to enter the Carlton rooms to be part of celebrations for Jack's 100th game in 2023, and was a notable absentee earlier this year when the club marked the 30-year anniversary of their 1995 premiership. Every member of the 1995 team - bar Silvagni - attended an official function to mark the anniversary during their game against Geelong in April. RELATED: AFL world sends flood of messages over Collingwood hero's family news Max Gawn comes clean after Demons' diabolical late mistake in loss Luke Hodge's advice for Jack Silvagni Speaking last week, Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge said it would be a "no-brainer" for Jack to join Collingwood. "You've got a club who is really struggling (Carlton), has dropped away from a prelim final two years ago to players who look like they are playing for themselves out on the field," Hodge said on SEN radio. 'They don't know what is going on with the coach. They've got Wrighty (Graham Wright) coming in to make some big calls. "Versus a club who is offering you more money (Collingwood) and are sitting on top of the ladder (and) who's going to play finals. I understand loyalty is a massive thing, but (it's the) opportunity versus to play in a premiership versus a club that's stable at the moment. 'You sit back and go - the only way he wouldn't go is if Collingwood were paying less and Carlton bumped up the offer. It's common sense.'

Osaka to work with Wiktorowski on trial after Mouratoglou split

Japan's Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam singles champion, will work with Polish coach Tomasz Wiktorowski on a trial basis after splitting with Patrick Mouratoglou after less than a year together. Osaka announced the parting with Frenchman Mouratoglou, the former coach of superstar Serena Williams, on social media on Monday before defeating Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault 6-4, 6-2 in 76 minutes in a first round match at the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal. Osaka, ranked 49th, began working in Canada with Wiktorowski, who coached Poland's Agnieszka Radwańska from 2011-2018, helping her reach the Wimbledon final and world number two ranking in July 2012. Wiktorowski also coached Poland's Iga Swiatek from late 2021 until last October, a run where she won four of her six career Grand Slam singles titles, before adding the most recent at Wimbledon earlier this month. Osaka, who improved to 11-1 in matches against players ranked outside the top 100, will next face 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. They have split four prior meetings but Osaka won the two they played on hardcourts. Former world number one Osaka, 27, began working with Mouratoglou last September. "Merci Patrick it was such a great experience learning from you," Osaka posted on social media. "Wishing you nothing but the best. You are one of the coolest people l've ever met and I'm sure I'll see you around." Mouratoglou said on Instagram he was "grateful for the trust, the journey and what we have built together," and told Osaka he "will always root for you." Under the Frenchman's guidance, Osaka reached the Auckland final in January but retired after the first set with an abdominal injury. She won twice at the Australian Open but retired after the first set in her third match with the same injury. Osaka won her first WTA title since the 2021 Australian Open in May at the L'Open 35 de Saint Malo, but fell in the first round of the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon. js/lp
