France halts Gaza evacuations after Palestinian student sparks antisemitism row

India Todaya day ago
France has halted evacuations from Gaza after a Palestinian student accused of sharing antisemitic posts entered the country. The government is reviewing its vetting process and re-screening all Gaza evacuees.France has suspended its humanitarian evacuation programme for Palestinians fleeing war-ravaged Gaza after a student accused of sharing antisemitic content online was found to have entered the country under a scholarship scheme.advertisementThe move was confirmed by French Minister Jean-Nol Barrot, who said on Franceinfo radio, 'No evacuation of any kind will take place until we have drawn conclusions from this investigation.'
The student, who had been enrolled at the prestigious Sciences Po university in Lille, lost her accreditation after screenshots emerged on social media allegedly showing her reposting antisemitic content, including an image of Adolf Hitler accompanied by captions appearing to incite violence against Jews. The posts, reportedly shared in September, were widely circulated by pro-Israel accounts on X (formerly Twitter).Lille's chief prosecutor told AFP a criminal probe has been opened against the student for allegedly attempting to 'justify terrorism' and 'justify a crime against humanity.' French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau also intervened, demanding the student's social media account be shut down. It has since been taken offline. The student arrived in France on July 11 under a programme that awarded scholarships for 'academic excellence' and had already passed through an initial security screening, according to a French diplomatic source. However, Foreign Minister Stphane Sjourn later confirmed that 'She must leave the country,' adding that discussions were underway regarding her deportation destination.Barrot emphasised that all Palestinians previously admitted to France through the evacuation programme will now undergo a second round of screening. 'We are not suspending humanitarian support. But we must understand how such a failure in vetting occurred,' he said.Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, France has facilitated the evacuation of over 500 people from Gaza, including journalists, artists, students, and wounded children. The scandal has placed intense scrutiny on France's screening process and humanitarian intake policies amid growing political pressure and concerns about rising antisemitism.- EndsMust Watch

‘Every kid in Bengaluru should study in Kannada': Zoho's Sridhar Vembu slams English-medium obsession

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has reignited the national debate on the role of English in India's education system by advocating for a 'regional language first' approach. In a detailed post on X , Vembu argued that India's overdependence on English as the medium of instruction is a colonial legacy that continues to widen the gap between urban elites and rural youth. Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu.(Image via Twitter) Also Read - Bengaluru resident questions city's liveability after 9 years: 'We're all just surviving' Take a look at the post Highlighting the deep societal divisions created by English fluency, Vembu questioned the long-standing assumption that English-medium education is the only path to global competitiveness. 'Should we still value English as the medium of instruction? Learning English as a language is important, but teaching subjects like maths, history or medicine in English makes little sense,' he wrote. In his post, Vembu cited European countries such as the Netherlands as examples where native languages are prioritised in classrooms, despite strong global presence. 'The Netherlands, which has only a quarter of Tamil Nadu's population, mandates Dutch as the medium of instruction, and children adapt swiftly,' he pointed out. Focusing on Karnataka, Vembu argued that students in Bengaluru should be educated in Kannada, not just learn it as a subject. 'Yes, that means every child in Bengaluru should study in Kannada. Similarly, children in Chennai must study in Tamil. Language builds cultural connection. When we ignore this, we risk alienating children from their roots,' he stated. 'This English-status syndrome is holding back millions of our young minds. The idea that English-medium education in government schools will solve this divide has failed repeatedly,' he added. Vembu also pushed back against the idea that fluency in English is essential for success in the tech industry. 'At Zoho, we develop advanced tools like compilers and backend systems, yet English proficiency was never a hiring filter. Our engineers, many of whom speak only Tamil, read English documentation as needed, just like engineers in Japan, Korea or Germany do,' he said. He further noted that non-Tamil employees at Zoho who move to Tamil Nadu adapt by learning Tamil to collaborate effectively. 'We do it abroad when we settle in non-English-speaking countries. Why can't we do the same here, in our own land?' he asked.

Ex OnlyFans creator Jacob Berger accused of using pro-Palestine activism to harass Arab women: 'If you want to thank me, send nudes'

Jacob Berger, a Jewish-American actor, content creator, and self-proclaimed pro-Palestine activist from New York City, is facing mounting backlash after serious allegations surfaced online. Known for his viral sketch comedy videos and political advocacy, the former OnlyFans creator, 40, built a massive following of over a million Instagram users, many of whom supported his outspoken stance on Palestinian rights. However, recent accusations shared by Palestinian student and activist Nerdeen Kiswani have sparked outrage across social media, with many now calling him out for alleged exploitation, self-promotion, and sexual harassment. What Nerdeen Kiswani has accused Jacob Berger of On X, Nerdeen Kiswani shared a series of tweets that outlined multiple serious allegations against a man she initially did not name but described in a way that clearly pointed toward Berger. She later confirmed this through tweets and replies. Her first tweet read, 'There's a white Jewish man who's managed to wedge himself into pro-Palestine spaces, building a personal brand off of genocide. And every time I vaguely mention him, without even naming him, someone new messages me with another horrifying story.' In the following tweets, she alleged, 'This man was a failed OnlyFans creator before rebranding as a 'Palestine supporter.' Since then, he's taken sponsorship deals, asked for donations nonstop, and monetized every angle of his supposed activism.' 'He was in Egypt under the guise of helping relief efforts for Gaza. Instead, he bragged about getting a free apartment, not paying for anything, and living comfortably while volunteers around him were actually working.' 'He reportedly made videos with Palestinian children on a 'field trip,' asking people to donate for these 'orphans' without consent from their families. When they found out and asked him to take it down, he blocked them.' 'He sexually harasses and fetishises Arab women, according to multiple reports. Several women have described feeling unsafe around him, especially in activist spaces.' 'He joined a solidarity flotilla and then voluntarily signed self-deportation orders, abandoning others who went on hunger strike while still in captivity. When people asked him about it, he blocked them too.' She concluded the thread by writing, 'He centres himself in everything. Even when talking to Palestinians and on livestreams, it's 'me, me, me'—how he suffers, how he is censored, how he gave up fame, while literally grifting off of a genocide.' There's a white Jewish man who's managed to wedge himself into pro-Palestine spaces, building a personal brand off of genocide. And every time I vaguely mention him, without even naming him, someone new messages me with another horrifying story. Allegation: 'Send me nudes' in exchange for activism In a follow-up post, Kiswani shared a disturbing message from a follower detailing what Berger allegedly said during a TikTok Live, 'Hi Anas, I just wanted to add something to this. So Jacob was recently on TikTok Live, where he was on Handala, and he was talking about how a bunch of women are supposedly reaching out to him and thanking him for his activism. Then he said, 'If you really want to thank me, send me nudes.'' Kiswani also posted additional screenshots from followers recounting encounters with him, and wrote, 'Since posting this in just the past hour, 2 more people informed me of additional examples of him sexualising Arab women & fetishising the movement.' Jacob Berger sexually assaulted Barney.I believe her, Jacob needs to be removed from our spaces IMMEDIATELY, that man is a dangerous predator !!!!!Women deserve to be protected from him and he deserves to be deplatformed. Screenshots, fundraiser misuse, and Islamophobic behaviour In further tweets, Kiswani accused Berger of using Islam in a derogatory manner and exploiting Palestinian suffering for monetary gain. She shared screenshots of videos and interactions, then added: 'Like, is this supposed to be normal?? A white Jewish guy starts supporting Palestine and then bases half of his content around fetishising Arab women, and we're not supposed to call this out?' Like is this supposed to be normal?? a white Jewish guy starts supporting Palestine and then bases half of his content around fetishizing Arab women and we're not supposed to call this out?? She also accused him of misleading fundraising practices, 'He weaponises Islam against Muslims and speaks in a disgusting derogatory manner to people when he is questioned about sharing a fundraiser that used images/videos of a program for Palestinians in Egypt that they don't even give money to.' He weaponizes Islam against Muslim and speaks in disgusting derogatory manner to people when he was questioned about sharing a fundraiser that used images/videos of a program for Palestinian in Egypt that they don't even give money to. What Reddit users are saying Kiswani's tweets have been widely shared on Reddit, where users have expressed anger, disappointment, and concern about how Berger managed to gain influence in organising spaces. Many pointed to his performative tone and self-centred messaging. One Reddit user wrote, 'So sick of people using organising spaces for important causes like it's Tinder/for their foul sexual fantasies and further traumatising others. There are way too many people like this and it's discouraging.' Another said, 'I'm honestly surprised at how many folks are in here saying he seemed normal to them and they engaged with his content. There are Palestinian voices out here; they aren't hard to find—no need for Mr White Guy Look at Me.' One user shared their reaction to Berger's livestream, 'I got weird vibes from his TikTok Live stream… just seemed like he was striking a really weird tone for an activist sailing to Palestine.' Another commented, 'I've been following him for the last weeks and his vibes are off, too much self-promotional and performative. It's better to just unfollow him and not lose sight of the larger picture.' Who is Jacob Berger? Before stepping into the world of viral comedy and activism, Jacob Berger worked as a licensed mental health and substance abuse counsellor, holding an LMSW from Columbia University. He transitioned into acting in 2010 and later found social media success starting in 2017 through sketch comedy videos, often laced with political or cultural commentary. He eventually grew a following for his vocal pro-Palestine stance and travelled to regions like Egypt under the banner of humanitarian relief and solidarity. Berger often claimed that he gave up career opportunities and fame to advocate for justice in Palestine. But in light of the recent accusations, many are questioning the integrity of his motivations.
