A 44-year-old man was arrested Monday evening near the fairgrounds in Puyallup after a pedestrian with a gun confronted him while he was allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. The suspect then fled from police in a vehicle.
A woman was injured in the assault, and the ensuing chase ended with police using a pursuit intervention tactic to stop the man's vehicle, the Puyallup Police Department said in a news release. The man was booked into Pierce County Jail, and on Tuesday Pierce County prosecutors charged him with fourth-degree assault, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, driving while under the influence and duty in case of damage to attended vehicle or other property.
Police said they responded at about 6:38 p.m. to a report of a confrontation involving a firearm at East Pioneer and South Meridian and discovered someone with a gun had intervened in a domestic-violence assault.
The suspect stopped assaulting his girlfriend and fled when he was confronted by the person who stepped in with a gun, police said. According to a police report, a witness told officers he was driving down Pioneer when he saw a man wearing all black beating on a woman when another man in a tan baseball jersey pulled a gun and told him to get away and stay back.
'Myself and two other guys tried to keep the guy in the black from leaving,' the witness said in a written statement. 'He charges at us and the guy in the jersey pulled the gun again to protect us and keep him back.'
Arriving officers found that the woman was bleeding from her head and requested medical aid. Police said the suspect was leaving the area in a gray Dodge Caliber. He refused to stop, and officers pursued him.
The suspect's driving was reportedly erratic but slow. According to a police report, officers used a pursuit intervention technique or PIT maneuver multiple times to try to stop his vehicle, but the driver turned his vehicle around each time and continued fleeing.
At one point the suspect tried to drive through the 'A lot' of the Washington State Fair. A sergeant blocked the exit with his patrol car, according to a police report, but the suspect didn't stop and rammed the back of the police vehicle to escape.
The pursuit continued south on Meridian, and officers performed a successful PIT maneuver near the grounds of the Washington State Fair, where the suspect was taken into custody.
Inside the suspect's car, police saw an empty liquor bottle, a full liquor bottle and a knife, a police officer wrote in a report. The suspect submitted to a voluntary breath test, which returned a result of 0.272, above the legal blood-alcohol limit for motorists of 0.08.

Martin Kove accused of biting, then kissing, ‘Cobra Kai' co-star Alicia Hannah-Kim's arm

Martin Kove, who stars as John Kreese on 'Cobra Kai,' allegedly bit a co-star — hard — on Sunday at a fan convention in Washington state. Alicia Hannah-Kim, who joined the Netflix series as Kim Da-Eun in the show's fifth season, was on her way to her booth when she tapped Kove on the shoulder to say hello in an area where the show's cast was hanging out, according to a Puyallup Police Department report obtained by The Times. Kove's reaction appears to have shocked her. 'When Alicia did this Martin Kove suddenly grabbed her arm and bit her upper arm so hard it nearly drew blood, and she yelled out in pain,' an officer who was assigned to VIP security at Washington State Summer Con wrote in the report. 'Once Martin Kove finished biting her arm, he grabbed her arm again and began kissing it where he bit her.' The officer said the actor had a 'very noticeable bite mark on her arm that was already turning blue and bruising' when she showed it to him. When Hannah-Kim, 37, and her husband-handler Sebastian Roche, went to talk to the 78-year-old actor immediately after the incident, Kove 'exploded' and said he had done nothing wrong, the report said. That's when the couple got the police involved. Kove admitted to the officer that he had bitten his co-star's arm and said he 'did it out of jest' and 'thought he was being funny,' the report said. The officer said in the report that he told Kove that biting Hannah-Kim was illegal and could be investigated as an assault. Kove could potentially be arrested or cited, the officer said. Kove said 'something to the effect of he said sorry already,' then 'appeared to see how serious' the situation was and began to apologize in the officer's presence. Hannah-Kim told the officer privately that she did not want to pursue charges but wanted a report filled out in case it happened again. Kove declined the opportunity to file a handwritten statement about what had happened, the report said. Roche did give a handwritten statement in which he noted that Kove had 'resorted to being very angry at us' when he and his wife confronted him about the incident. Hannah-Kim and Kove both play head senseis on 'Cobra Kai.' A representative for Kove, who has more than 230 acting credits including 'Death Race 2000,' 'Wyatt Earp,' 'VFW' and the 'Karate Kid' movies, did not respond immediately on Tuesday to The Times' request for comment.

Peoria man gets 7-year sentence for June 2024 shooting

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Peoria man was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison for a June 2024 incident where two cars were struck by gunfire. Christopher Polnitz Cleary, 20, was sentenced in Peoria County Circuit Court by Chief Judge Katherine Gorman. The sentence was in near the lower end of the four-to-15-year year prison term. Polnitz-Clary was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the June 7, 2024, incident that occurred near the intersection of East Frye and North Indiana avenues. More than 60 shell casings were found on the scene, according to Peoria police. Two days later, officers were sent to the intersection of Hanssler Place and Broadway Street for another report of shots fired. When they arrived, a home and a car were struck by gunfire. During an investigation of the second shooting, detectives found that a blue Dodge Caliber was the vehicle used in the shootings. Two Peoria men indicted for June shooting leaving more than 60 shell casings behind In April, Cleary pleaded guilty and under state law, he must serve at least 85% of his sentence. During the sentencing hearing Wednesday, Assistant State's Attorney Brian FitzSimons told Gorman that the shooting happened in the middle of the day and while people were around. It's sheer luck, he said, that no one was hurt. Gorman noted that while Polnitz-Clary had taken steps to improve himself while in custody, his actions could not be overlooked.
