Pogacar takes 100th career win
ROUEN, France: Tadej Pogacar blew past his rivals in an 'explosive' finish to take Tour de France stage four at Rouen on Tuesday and claim his 100th professional victory. 'That was really pure, classic Tour-de-France-style explosive,' said an elated Pogacar. The win did not quite bring him the overall lead. Dutch powerhouse Mathieu van der Poel finished second to keep the yellow jersey.
Pogacar attacked on an incline to the line to finish just ahead of Van der Poel with Jonas Vingegaard third. It was the 26-year-old Slovenian's 18th Tour de France stage win as he seeks a fourth overall triumph on the Tour. 'There was big adrenalin and a big field of contenders,' Pogacar said.
Fans were treated to another Pogacar-Vingegaard head-to-head duel as five hills made the final 40km a roller-coaster. Van der Poel also entered the fray and kept the overall lead he took from Alpecin teammate Jasper Philipsen, who quit the Tour injured after a nasty fall on Monday. 'Jasper needs to recover, and I hope he understands how hard I tried to win for him today,' Van der Poel said.
On the day's final real climb, Pogacar dropped all his rivals with only Vingegaard offering a real fight. But the big Dutch rider and the slender Dane both came back at Pogacar, making him fight all the way to the line in a thunderous finale. The same trio top the overall standings, with Pogacar second and Vingegaard in third.
Van der Poel took the overall lead on stage two but risks losing it on Wednesday's time trial. 'I should be happy to have the jersey again,' said Van der Poel. 'I was surrounded by climbers out there you know.' 'Tadej was stronger and it's as simple as that.'
Plenty of falls
Unlike the opening three stages, there was hardly a puff of wind and not a drop of rain, but there were still plenty of falls. There was also a knifing incident with a man at Rouen slightly injuring a police officer before himself being shot as he tried to escape. Neither the police officer nor the alleged culprit suffered life-threatening injuries.
Stage five will shake up the overall standings with a 33km individual time trial around Caen. The stage is being billed as the day Remco Evenepoel will finally slip into the overall leader's yellow jersey. To do so the 25-year-old Belgian world and Olympic champion in the discipline will need to cover the course 59sec faster than Pogacar and Vingegaard. 'But tomorrow will be the big day, the real test of how good everyone is,' said Pogacar.
'Don't count Remco out,' he added. 'He's the best in the world and he'll be going full gas, like me.' The first mountains come as late as stage 10 over the volcanic landscape of the Puy de Dome, with two more colossal climbing days in the Pyrenees before the blockbuster final week in the Alps. — AFP

India were reportedly keen to host the next final in two years' time but England have been awarded the finals of the 2027, 2029 and 2031 editions. At its annual conference in Singapore, the ICC noted England's 'successful track record in hosting recent finals', even though Ben Stokes's side are yet to reach the one-off showpiece. 'We are absolutely delighted that England and Wales has been chosen to host the next three ICC World Test Championship finals,' said England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Richard Gould. 'It's a testament to the passion that fans in this country have for this treasured format of the game and the willingness of supporters from around the world to travel here for these games.' Nine teams contest the WTC and each nation plays six other sides — three home and three away — over the course of a two-year cycle. Solberg secures first WRC win in Estonia

The 23-year-old is the son of 2003 WRC champion Petter Solberg and was making his first appearance in the elite class since 2022. Solberg made the most of the opportunity handed to him by Toyota, who gave him the chance to drive one of their cars for this rally in the absence of eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier. The Swede charged into the lead on Friday and never relinquished it on the high-speed gravel roads. He finished 25.2 seconds ahead of home favorite and 2019 world champion Ott Tanak. Reigning champion Thierry Neuville of Belgium came in third place. 'After everything, so many years trying and trying and trying and dreaming, and me and (co-driver) Elliott (Edmondson) finally made it,' said Solberg. 'I just want to say thank you to Toyota, to the test team who helped me get so comfortable, for all the help this weekend from this beautiful, beautiful team. Manila crowd cheers Pacquiao comeback, draw and all
MANILA: The crowd inside the Manila college gym on Sunday roared with every flurry that Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao landed in Las Vegas, then groaned collectively when a draw was announced at the end of 12 hard-fought rounds. An outdoor viewing party originally planned for the Welfareville neighborhood, where a slum sits alongside wealthier areas, was moved inside after heavy rain from Tropical Storm Wipha. About 2,000 people watched their 46-year-old hero's improbable comeback attempt on a giant screen placed under a basketball scoreboard. At one point, they leapt out of their chairs as Pacquiao — four years removed from his last fight — landed a series of combinations against Mario Barrios. They were out of their chairs again late in the penultimate round — this time because the feed dropped out at a crucial moment of action. Organizers got it back online just before the final round began. 'I was slightly disappointed because Pacquiao seemed to be leading during the first rounds,' Junel Magday, a young boxer who attended with his team, told AFP after the fight. Even so, the former champion remained an inspiration for the 19-year-old. 'His persistence, courage and also his heart' were the key takeaways, Magday said, 'even if he's way older now'. Pacquiao is deeply admired across the Philippines for his rise from a teenager street vendor to one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time, spinning that passion into careers in politics and even singing. His fights were once a de facto public holiday in the Philippines, emptying streets and grinding commerce to a halt as residents stayed glued to their television sets. 'Happy with every hit' The enthusiasm felt more muted this time, as Pacquiao headed into the fight with defending WBC welterweight champion Barrios. But for Alfonso Arvuso, the Filipino champ had lost none of his luster. The 66-year-old fan showed up at 7 am, an hour before the venue opened, to grab seats for himself and his two grandchildren, aged six and eight. 'If Pacquiao wins, it's like all of us win too,' he said, predicting victory ahead of the fight. Norbien Bailon, who has used a cane since suffering a stroke, said he walked about half a kilometre to get to the venue. 'It's a little difficult to walk, but I still chose to watch here because there are many people who also support him, and it's exciting,' the 59-year-old said just ahead of the bout. The outcome did not faze him. 'It's OK, even if it's a draw,' he said afterwards. 'At least he didn't lose. My coming here was still worth it.' Pacquiao's last two battles, a 2021 bout against Yordenis Ugas and a run for Senate this past May, both ended in defeat. This time around, a draw was good enough, said Roy Nierva, a fan of the fighter since 2001. 'The bout was still good,' the 36-year-old said as the building emptied out under threatening skies.
