Artist's painting celebrates the ultimate human race

SIBUSISO Duma is the 43rd artist showcasing his work on the Woza Moya Artists' Wall. His work will be featured for the month of May to celebrate the Comrades Marathon 2025.
The concept behind the Woza Moya Artists' Wall and Artists' Cards is to create and showcase the work of artists who have been hard-hit by Covid. Each month, a different artist is paid to paint a 1.2m x 1.2m wall panel which is displayed on the wall outside the Woza Moya Hillcrest Aids Centre shop.
Woza Moya is the economic empowerment project of the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust and assists the artist by marketing their work for the entire month.

A greeting card is made of the painted wall panel and sold in their shops so the artists can earn an ongoing passive income. This has worked well with artists earning from R200 to R1000 a month from the sale of the cards. The Woza Moya Artists' wall thanked the 100% Foundation for their ongoing sponsorship and for making this a monthly event.
About the artist
Duma is an established artist and is represented in various galleries and collections locally and overseas. This painting titled 'Comrades Marathon', 59cm x 42cm, was painted with acrylic paint on a canvas. The painting celebrates the Comrades Marathon and was commissioned by Woza Moya to celebrate all Comrades runners. The Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust is a charity of the Comrades Marathon and has more than 60 runners running to raise money for the 24-bed respite unit.
Duma was born in Mbumbulu, Durban, where he still works and resides. He started drawing with crayons and colour pencils from an early age. His talent was noticed and nourished by his school teachers and the late Trevor Makhoba through his Philange Art Project in Umlazi.
Duma has built on his own style and visual language with his original vision and his sometimes challenging subject matter. He uses familiar iconography such as the human figure in a rural landscape. There are often contradictions between rural and urban themes but his passion and love for the rural landscape and tradition is always present. His paintings often use humour and satire, helping in the understanding of present social conditions.
The use of personal iconography and metaphors harvested from everyday life manifests a fine balance between fantasy and reality. His work is typified by his treatment of the surface, subject matter, composition and the use of space and colour, which collectively create touches of mystery and intrigue. His work has been collected by multiple galleries and museums locally and worldwide.
Duma said he loves and enjoys watching the race as he picks up on how all shapes and sizes of runners finish the 'ultimate human race'.
The artwork is for sale and people can bid for the artwork online: htttps://www.wozamoya.co.za/auctions. Bidding starts at R1000. The auction starts on May 10 and ends on June 10 after the Comrades Marathon.

WATCH: Ntsiki Mazwai appeals for donations to pay legal costs

Mazwai lost a defamation case against DJ Euphonik in 2022 and was ordered to pay about R200 000 in legal costs. Poet and musician Ntsiki Mazwai has turned to her supporters for help in covering legal costs after losing her court case against DJ Euphonik. In 2022, Euphonik won a defamation case against Mazwai after she insinuated on X in 2020 that he was a rapist. The court ordered Mazwai to pay approximately R200 000 in legal costs. READ MORE: Ntsiki Mazwai: Court orders to pay large sums of money is a 'form of violence' The poet has since been struggling to settle the bill. On Tuesday, she shared her banking details and email address on X, pleading for donations. Ntsiki Mazwai: 'I promise to pass over that money' 'You saw my business being splattered in the streets. I'm going to put my email address on here. Anybody who wants to donate to the legal bills, I'm going to put my email address there,' Ntsiki said. Mazwai promised that all funds would be paid directly to her lawyers and offered to share their banking details with those willing to contribute. She added: 'Any Ntsiki Mazwai supporter who gets it and understands that my voice is our voice, and who wants me to continue to use my voice… I promise to pass over that money to those lawyers. Otherwise, you can email me, I can give you their banking details, and then you send me the proof of payment, and we keep it moving, guys. 'It doesn't have to be the end of the world. We're going to pay bit by bit and continue living our lives, continue building the MOYA podcast, continue building Nontsikelelo Mazwai, the future president of South Africa,' she said in the video. Mazwai urges Euphonik to drop court costs order In 2023, Mazwai reportedly wrote a letter to Euphonik's lawyers admitting she was wrong to call him a rapist and urging him to drop the cost order against her. According to Sunday World, Mazwai pleaded with the DJ to have mercy on her, saying she did not have the money to pay the costs. In the letter seen by the publication, Mazwai reportedly attributed her financial struggles to the Covid-19 pandemic, saying she was still trying to recover from its devastating impact. 'I am an artist, and this time of the year is not really one in which we are earning money. 'Also, we are coming off the back end of Covid, which annihilated our businesses. I am still at the stage where one has lost everything and is required to rebuild,' Mazwai said as quoted by the publication. NOW READ: Power FM 'duly accepted' Pabi Moloi's resignation

The 35-year-old is at the peak of her powers and is the undisputed Queen of SA road running, and has been for some time. The four-time Comrades Marathon and six-time Two Oceans Marathon champion is always the favourite when she lines up in a race in South Africa when it's 42km and above. The Smiling Assassin also competes strongly for South Africa when she competes abroad, having also held the SA record in the marathon until recently when Glenrose Xaba set the new mark in October 2024. ‘Beachfront Barry' releases memoir, Positive Living

Popular and controversial in equal measure, former Ballito nomad Barry Godwin has recorded his life story in a memoir titled Positive Living. The book was launched at Ekhaya Guest House on Saturday afternoon, at an event hosted by Richard Finch of the Ballito Book Readers Club. Around 30 people attended and, after asking questions of Godwin and enjoying a reading from the book, each left with a signed copy. 'His story is incredible, you are going to laugh and cry, but above all, you are going to think,' said local photographer Barry Bowditch, who was instrumental in helping Godwin publish the book. 'I would like to thank my wife Denise, who spent thousands of hours translating Barry's beautiful handwriting into type,' he added, noting that it was left unchanged from the original handwritten notes, errors and all. Godwin was long a fixture on the Ballito beachfront with his dog Rasta, and has experienced both temporary and long-term homelessness since 1991, along with time spent in prison. He now lives on a farm outside Dundee. 'If I sleep in a tent, in my rondawel or outside, I enjoy my life being simple,' said Godwin. 'I couldn't be more comfortable – in my mind.' Positive Living is available for R200 if collected from Bowditch, who can be contacted at 082 256 0006. Delivery fee extra.
