I Think I Just Built a Slate Electric Truck for Under $20,000 -- and Tesla and Rivian Should Be Nervous

Have you heard about the new Slate electric truck? Because Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) certainly have. And if you're an investor in either of these two leading electric vehicle (EV) stocks, you should definitely be keeping an eye on Slate.
And if you have not heard about Slate yet, here's what you need to know.
First and foremost, you need to know that the threat Slate poses to Tesla and Rivian is of the not-quite-yet variety. Although backed by multiple well-heeled financiers, billionaire Jeff Bezos among them, Slate is an electric car company still firmly in start-up mode. Media reports indicate (but Slate is not yet confirming), that Slate EV truck deliveries probably won't begin before the final quarter of 2026. That said, pre-orders of Slate trucks, secured by a refundable $50 deposit, began last week.
It's likely they've already begun to affect sales of Tesla Cybertrucks and Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles.
Slate describes its new electric truck as "the most radically simple, wildly personalizable vehicle out there," designed in California and assembled in Michigan (or perhaps Indiana -- here's some confusion on this point). At its basest level, Slate is a tiny two-door RWD pickup. It's roughly the size of an early 2000s-era standard cab Ford Ranger, but two feet shorter in length than a modern Ford Maverick hybrid pickup, for example, and much smaller than Tesla's or Rivian's trucks.
Slate is building interest in the new vehicle by advertising it at "an expected price of under $20,000 after federal incentives," which implies a base price of perhaps $27,000, minus a federal tax credit of $7,500 for U.S.-built electric vehicles.
Compare that to Cybertruck's $69,990 entry price, the $71,700 a base Rivian R1T will cost you, or the $77,700 MSRP on a Rivian R1S, and you can see right away why Slate is attracting interest, and probably stealing away market share from its rivals.
Of course, all of the above are advertised base model prices. Start adding options, and each of the EVs named above skyrockets in cost. (Cybertruck, for example, is described as the best-selling vehicle in America, "priced above $100,000," which tells you few shoppers are finding Cybertrucks for under $70,000.) And Slate already has "nearly four dozen accessories" available for add-on.
All of which got me thinking. I'm a cheapskate at heart, and I'd really like to see if it's possible to build a Slate truck for something close to its advertised price. Is that possible? And would a cheap Slate truck be worth owning?
So I decided to find out.
Logging onto Slate's website, I set up an account and paid the $50 reservation fee -- then started building.
I began with what's called the Blank Slate, a 150-mile range electric truck in two-door pickup configuration, adding only a spare tire carrier to the rear liftgate, which required adding a bigger rear bumper. I skipped right past options to add decals or "wrap" the Slate in a different color. (Colors are added by wrapping, rather than painting, on Slate). I similarly skipped upgrades for all-terrain tires and bigger tires, and left the wheels alone as well. And I declined an upgrade to a 240-mile range battery pack.
I might rethink that decision later.
Headlights and brake lights? The basics work for me. Likewise most interior colors, including for seat, armrest, steering wheel, and window crank -- yes, Slate has manual windows. I did add contrasting colors for climate control dials and key fob, to make them easier to find in the dark.
For the floor, I chose an easy-to-clean rubber floor liner, and rubber floor mats, figuring for a completely new truck model, it might a while before Walmart stocks mats that fit.
The big decision was on the stereo. Slate offers the option to "bring your own" configuration in which neither stereo nor speakers are installed. Instead, you can add a speaker mount, phone holder, and Bluetooth controls on the steering wheel. Then buy a Bluetooth speaker on Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN), plug it in and connect it to your phone. Abracadabra, you've got a pack 'n' play entertainment center that never goes obsolete -- because when it does, you can just switch it out for the latest tech.
Slate actually recommends this option. I have a hunch Amazon likes the idea, too, as do I.
Ultimately, I still probably skipped 90% of the "personalization" steps Slate offered, all in the interest of getting a basic, usable electric truck for a price as low as humanly possible. And did it work?
I hope so. Slate doesn't actually show the price effect of any of its personalization options, not even for the battery upgrade, which I suspect affects MSRP significantly. When all's said and done, I couldn't tell you exactly how much my Slate build will cost.
Still and all, the vast majority of the personalization options seem entirely skippable, without affecting the functionality of the truck (aside from the battery upgrade, that is, or the option of converting the pickup into an SUV). This suggests that buying a bare-bones Slate for close to the advertised price -- again, that's under $20,000 after government tax incentives -- is in fact entirely doable, as the company claims it is.
Just the prospect alone, and the promise of deliveries starting perhaps 18 months from now, could drain significant demand away from Tesla and Rivian. For a chance to save 70% off the cost of a new electric truck, I can afford to wait.

A Little Bad News for Rivian and Lucid
Survey results suggest cooling sentiment toward EVs. Consumers still hesitate when it comes to price and public charging infrastructure. The Trump administration is currently trying to pull back support for EVs. 10 stocks we like better than Rivian Automotive › Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN) and Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) entered 2025 in different gears. Rivian was entering a year with no major vehicle launch, stagnating deliveries, and a lack of any visible catalysts, while Lucid has strung together six consecutive quarters of record deliveries and is ramping the production of its new Gravity SUV. One thing they both have in common is a growing, albeit more slowly than hoped, electric vehicle (EV) market. Here's the bad news: Some recent data says that the EV market sentiment looks to be souring. Tesla changed the game when it made EVs "cool" for the first time. Since then, the hype surrounding EVs as the future of transportation has swept the globe, in some countries (like China) faster than in others. But according to a recent survey, that hype could be in decline in the U.S. Interest in EVs spiraled to its lowest level since 2019, according to a consumer survey commissioned by AAA. Only 16% of respondents reported being "likely" or "very likely" to purchase an EV as their next vehicle, signaling consumer caution. The percentage of respondents who indicated they would be "unlikely" or "very unlikely" to purchase an EV as their next vehicle jumped from 51% to 63%, the highest mark since 2022. The percentage who believe that most cars will be electric within the next decade fell from 40% in 2022 to 23% this year. Not only is interest in EVs down, there's also the lingering pessimism surrounding battery repair costs, total costs, and charging infrastructure -- a story as old as EVs themselves. More specifically, 62% of respondents noted high battery repair costs as a main reason for avoiding going electric, while purchase price was cited by 59% of respondents. The hesitation when it comes to purchase price is understandable. The average transaction price for a new EV in March was $59,205, far higher than the overall average transaction price of $47,462, according to data from Cox Automotive. As far as consumer concerns go, 56% of respondents had the fear of running out of charge while driving, and 55% noted a lack of convenient public charging stations. The waning consumer sentiment goes hand in hand with the Trump administration's effort to pull support from the EV industry. House Republicans passed a budget bill on May 22 that will reduce federal incentives for battery manufacturing, as well as other clean energy projects. If the Senate approves it, it would cut the section of the bill that provides the $7,500 EV tax credit. The administration took it a step further, as the bill also institutes a new tax of $250 for EV owners and $100 for hybrid owners. The tax contributes to the Highway Trust Fund to support infrastructure. Investors would be wise to temper growth expectations for the EV industry this year, especially with tariff uncertainty hanging over the automotive industry. That's especially true considering that first-quarter data could give a different impression. EV registrations grew 16%, according to S&P Global Mobility, and market share rose from 6.9% to 7.7%, year over year. There was a demand pull-ahead effect due to people predicting that the tax credit would soon disappear. Rivian, which is currently waiting anxiously for the R2 launch, lacks momentum in 2025 and could use broader industry strength to boost its stock price. Investors who believe in Rivian long-term should keep their eyes open for a buying opportunity this year. For Lucid investors, while this decline in consumer sentiment isn't ideal, the company has plenty of self-driven momentum thanks to quarters of record deliveries. The company is currently ramping up production and deliveries of the new Gravity SUV EV, which will continue driving total deliveries higher throughout the year. For these two young automakers, the broader industry's health is important. The simple truth is that people aren't taking to EVs in the U.S. as quickly as investors had hoped. If I Could Only Buy and Hold a Single Stock, This Would Be It.
While Netflix, Amazon, and Nvidia have delivered spectacular returns, they lack the diversification needed for a single-stock portfolio. Berkshire Hathaway operates like an expertly curated ETF, owning 68 distinct companies plus stakes in nearly 40 public companies. Despite not owning Berkshire myself, I recognize it as the safest choice for investors seeking a single long-term holding. 10 stocks we like better than Berkshire Hathaway › Let's make this clear from the start: I would never recommend owning just one stock for the long haul. A proper nest egg needs some variety, either in a carefully assembled basket of diverse stocks or focused on a broad market-tracking exchange-traded fund (ETF). For the sake of argument, however, I could imagine buying some Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) stock and just letting it roll. I know, I know. You wanted me to double down on Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), whose stock has absolutely crushed the general market in the long run. Or I could have picked Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX), the media-streaming pioneer that's created most of my wealth so far and that might join the trillion-dollar market cap club in a few years. Perhaps you expected Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), with its unmatched five-year returns and huge long-term future in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. These stocks sure tick a few of the right boxes, but none of them are as naturally diversified as Berkshire Hathaway. That's really what I'm looking for in a "single stock for all ages." I own all three of the suggested Berkshire alternatives above, by the way. Netflix was an early name in my portfolio, inspired by fellow Fool Rick Munarriz's in-depth analysis of the company in the mid-2000s. When Netflix went through the Qwikster-branded separation of DVD and streaming services, I doubled down on my investment at a fantastic price. That particular Netflix stake has gained 10,350% in less than 14 years. But that's just my favorite play on the future of digital media services. I would never dare to make Netflix my only holding, just in case somebody builds a better media-streaming mousetrap. I wish I had pounced on Amazon much earlier, like Motley Fool co-founders Tom and David Gardner did. But I dragged my feet, and watched the online bookstore become an e-commerce buffet with a highly profitable side of cloud computing services. My oldest Amazon investment is only up by 430% since January 2017. Still, Amazon only operates in a couple of business sectors. The company (and stock) could be vulnerable to a sudden sea change in cloud computing, possibly led by Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows Azure. And how well would Amazon's dominant e-commerce business perform if global rivals such as Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) or MercadoLibre (NASDAQ: MELI) found some traction in the American market? Amazon is not a one-trick pony, but the company should pick up a few more skills before entering this single-stock discussion. I'm especially worried about Nvidia's long-term tenacity. The early leader in AI accelerator hardware could very well run into a superior alternative in the next few years. The risk only grows larger if you stretch the timeline out over decades. Rivals like Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) control tiny slices of the AI chip opportunity so far, but that could change. The next market-defining AI winner could be some upstart I haven't heard of yet. Moreover, leading cloud computing experts such as Microsoft and Amazon already design AI accelerators of their own, hoping to meet their exact needs at a lower cost. Nvidia's big growth spurt might have a few years left in it. I'm just not convinced that the stock will continue to rise after that. My largest Nvidia purchase has posted a 780% gain since June 2022, but I cashed in on those paper gains and sold most of my Nvidia shares earlier this year. This pony needs to learn a few more tricks, too. So diversity sets Berkshire apart from the biggest success stories of this era. Sure, Warren Buffett's stock-picking and wealth management expertise deserves tons of respect. But he is also known as a great mentor, and many of Berkshire's top-performing picks in recent years were added by Buffett's lieutenants. I expect the company to continue doing well when the Oracle of Omaha retires at the end of 2025. The stock is kind of like a carefully curated ETF. Berkshire Hathaway owns and operates 68 distinct companies these days. The names range from GEICO car insurance and Duracell batteries to Business Wire information services and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad. Berkshire dabbles in e-commerce (Oriental Trading Company) and clothing (Fruit of the Loom), not to mention home construction (Clayton Homes) and fast food (Dairy Queen). This business list is almost as diverse as the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) market index. And that's just Berkshire's in-house brands. The company also owns stock in about 40 public companies. The largest investments include a $60.7 billion stake in Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), a $45.1 billion position in American Express (NYSE: AXP), and a $28.5 billion holding of Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO). That's consumer electronics, financial services, and beverage distribution. Apple's gigantic presence may look risky, but the danger looks smaller when you also consider Berkshire's epic collection of fully owned businesses. Do you see a theme here? I do, but it's not a single industry. Berkshire is all about diversity, shielding the company and its investors against the temporary ups and downs in any one particular industry. I don't actually own any Berkshire Hathaway stock yet. I get my portfolio diversification kicks in other ways, with several dozen hand-picked stocks and a couple of broad index funds serving this purpose. That's arguably a mistake, since Berkshire's stock tends to outperform the S&P 500 in the long run, and I can't compete with the Buffett team's stock-picking skill. So if you're starting a new portfolio today, or just looking for an alternative to the common S&P 500 index funds, you should give Berkshire Hathaway a serious look. It's definitely a safer long-term bet than Nvidia, Netflix, or even Amazon.
