Happy Valley role born out of fear, Sarah Lancashire says
Lancashire, 60, won two leading actress Baftas for playing no-nonsense Sergeant Catherine Cawood in the BBC drama set in Hebden Bridge.
Her decades-long 'brilliant and intangible' working relationship with writer Sally Wainwright influenced her role, but fear was key to her performance.
Discussing the role at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, after being formally made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), Lancashire told the PA news agency: 'That was just born out of fear, abject fear, of feeling quite off-piste.
'Literally it was a leap of faith, jumping off the cliff at midnight in the dark.
'But knowing that somebody has the confidence in you and the belief in you – she (Wainwright) is deeply persuasive as an individual, which I absolutely, really admire, I'm very grateful, always.'
Lancashire's breakout role came as fan-favourite barmaid Raquel Watts in Coronation Street, which she played for five years until 1996, appearing in more than 260 episodes.
She and Wainwright first met when they were 'cutting their teeth' on the soap opera.
The duo later collaborated on the BBC drama Last Tango In Halifax, for which Lancashire won her first Bafta in 2014 for her supporting role.
They worked together again on Happy Valley, which ran from 2014 to 2023.
Asked what spurred the terror of playing Sergeant Cawood, Lancashire told PA: 'The setting of it, being asked to play something which I had no knowledge of at all – absolutely no knowledge.
'And knowing that the level of research that was available to me was going to be quite limited in the time available.
'But in actual fact – as she (Wainwright) always said – it wasn't a procedural drama, it was not a police drama, it… was a family.'
She spoke about performing during a conversation with the Princess Royal at the ceremony at the Berkshire royal residence.
Anne told her that she had briefly acted while at boarding school, Lancashire said.
The actress told PA: 'We were really talking about performance, and how she'd done a little bit of this when she was at boarding school.
'I think they all had to go onto a stage at some point and it can stand you in very good stead for future roles in life, no matter where it takes you.'
Being a professional actor 'is sort of clinging on for dear life', she said.
'It never changes. Very often as an actor you're swimming against the tide whilst standing on shifting sand.
'You feel that you may have some sort of trajectory but then the industry changes, because the industry is ever-evolving – every 10 years, you'll find yourself in an industry which is slightly different, requiring something different from you.
'So you're never secure, there's never a moment where you can be complacent, at all.
'It's sort of a clinging on for dear life, you just hope that you can stay with it.'
Her relationship with Wainwright was pivotal in fighting that tide.
She said: 'Having known her (Wainwright) for a very long time, decades, and just meeting someone whose voice you admire so much.
'Who knows why… there's an alchemy, that just works. It's a wonderful thing when you find it, not that I was looking for it, but it just happens – that's a tremendous thing.'

Strictly Come Dancing's Vito Coppola's heartbreaking admission as he 'walks away'
Vito Coppola has candidly shared his decision to part ways with a dance coach early in his career, receiving an overwhelming response from fans who appreciated his emotional revelation. The professional dancer is widely recognised and loved for his role on Strictly Come Dancing, having become a part of the cast in 2022. In his inaugural year, Vito made it to the final with Fleur East, before securing the title alongside former Coronation Street actress Ellie Leach in 2023. He then reached the final once more in 2024, this time partnered with actress Sarah Hadland. It's been confirmed that Vito will be gracing the ballroom again later this year for the 23rd series of Strictly. The BBC has unveiled the line-up of professional dancers for the 2025 season of the beloved dance show, with Vito joining Katya Jones, Nadiya Bychkova, Amy Dowden, Karen Hauer, Neil Jones, and Nikita Kuzmin, according to the Manchester Evening News, reports Wales Online. Also making a comeback are Dianne Buswell, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk, Jowita Przystal, Johannes Radebe, Aljaž Škorjanec, Kai Widdrington, Nancy Xu, Carlos Gu, Lauren Oakley, and Michelle Tsiakkas, while two new professionals will be introduced closer to the series launch. Prior to his return to Strictly, Vito was preparing to tour the country with Dianne Buswell in their joint-headline tour this summer. However, a recent trip back to Italy has led the dance star to reflect on his past. The Italian star took to Instagram with a video from the Bafta Television Awards red carpet, greeting his fans: "Good day, beautiful people!". He then shared a personal anecdote: "Today, I want to share a little story from my past. Back when I used to compete, I had a coach who was harsh with me every time I didn't follow his instructions to the letter." (Image: PA) He reflected on his individualistic nature: "The thing is, as many of you know, I'm a free transparent, and true to myself. That kind of personality doesn't always sit well with people who want control." Recounting a pivotal moment with his coach, he said: "One day, that coach told me: 'If you just follow your instincts, you're going to fail!' Those words were powerful and dangerous. But in that moment, I made a choice: I would never let someone else's beliefs define my reality!". He concluded with a message of self-love and determination: "So I walked away, not out of weakness, but out of love and respect for myself. I didn't know exactly where I was going or what I was doing, but I knew one thing: it felt right!". Vito expressed his heartfelt thanks, saying: "Today, I just want to say thank you to those who truly believe in me, love me, and support me every step of the way. I'm deeply means more than you can imagine. Sharing my experience is my way of telling you: YOU MATTER. WE MATTER. EVERYONE MATTERS! Never lose your smile, and always believe in yourself first. Most importantly, surround yourself with the right people, those who are real, genuine, and loyal. The kind of people with whom even a simple dinner of bread and water feels like a feast. That's true wealth!". He continued: "Always stay true to yourself, follow your instincts and your know that you're already a winner! And if anyone tries to hold you back? Show them what you're made of! Choose kindness and love... and remember to smile! V." The outpouring of support was immediate. @mmmyummystrawberries said: "I literally feel like standing up and applauding out loud reading that! Every word you said is so true. Always follow your gut, always stay true to yourself and do what's right for you. With you always." @jt_taylor73 added: "Well done @vitocoppola that must've been so hard! But look where you are now! Beautiful inside and out, smashing life." @caitlinwestiexoxo simply said: "We love you Vito! !". And @ms_lou_rob offered wrote: "That's such brilliant advice. Thank you @vitocoppola for just being you. Have a fantastic day." The Traitor's star Jaz Singh, who gained huge popularity with fans of the challenge programme after appearing in the second series, is set to host a brand new radio show on BBC Asian Network. Former Faithful Jaz's new show is set to air every Monday to Thursday from 3pm to 6pm. It's a huge step for the TV turned radio star as the gig is his first full-time role as a radio presenter. It comes after a Strictly Come Dancing star pulls out of show as he makes career announcement. Jaz's new radio show will see him feature a mix of music and entertainment and aims to reflect the interests and experiences of British Asian communities. Speaking about the exciting new career turn, Jaz said: "As a finalist on BBC The Traitors to now hosting my own live radio show with BBC Asian Network, I'm beyond grateful to the people that are putting their trust and time into me because this is a dream!! Expect the biggest tunes, good vibes and be prepared to see a side of me you've never witnessed before!" The new show, which is clearly an exciting opportunity for Jaz, will launch in less than a month's time on Monday September 1. Ahmed Hussain, Head of Asian Network, said: "We're entering an exciting new chapter at Asian Network. Jaz Singh's new afternoon show is a key part of our commitment to celebrating British Asian voices and music culture. His energy and charisma are infectious, and I'm confident he'll quickly become a familiar and much-loved presence in our listeners' daily routines." Jaz has made appearances on BBC Asian Network since leaving the Scottish castle, as he's hosted Asian Network Motivation as a rotational presenter as well as covering shows across the network. Meanwhile, he's also featured on BBC Radio 4, hosting a documentary for the radio channel. Jaz was a fan-favourite as he appeared on the second series of the show and he made it all the way to the final roundtable, where he was sadly banished. Jaz was a clever detective for the Faithfuls and was even nicknamed Jazatha Christie during his time in the castle. He was one of the only Faithfuls in the castle who had suspicions about Harry Clark, but he sadly wasn't able to convince the others and Harry got away with the prize money. Fans of the hit BBC show won't have to wait much longer for another taste of Traitors action as a celebrity version of the show has been filmed and is set for release in the autumn. The star-studded line-up includes Stephen Fry, Tom Daley, Clare Balding, Alan Carr, Bob Mortimer, Lucy Beaumont, Mark Bonnar, Cat Burns, Charlotte Church, Ruth Codd, Tameka Empson, Paloma Faith, Kate Garraway, Celia Imrie, Joe Marler and many more.

Destination X star details debilitating hidden health condition as BBC series became ‘ultimate challenge'
The Destination X contestant saw the BBC gameshow as the "ultimate challenge" to help her overcome it. Destination X contestant Chloe-Anne has opened up about a health condition that has impacted her since childhood, as she hoped to overcome it while taking part in the BBC series. The historian from Oxford was one of 13 strangers battling it out on Rob Brydon's new gameshow. The show sees them travel across Europe and take part in challenges to try and find out where they are. In a Traitors-style twist, Chloe-Anne was eliminated from the competition in the very first episode, only to be brought back into the game earlier this week. However, it was only for a short stint, as she lost out on the £100,000 cash prize when she failed to correctly guess the location after a series of tense challenges in episodes that aired earlier this week. Despite losing her spot in the show, Chloe-Anne has revealed that she did complete what she set out to do in overcoming her anxiety. In an exclusive interview, the 27-year-old shared: 'I grew up with crippling anxiety, like I had such bad anxiety when I was growing up that I couldn't go into a cinema without screaming, crying, or throwing up and running out, it was really extreme claustrophobia and anxiety. 'When I was about 15 years old, I developed this phrase to help me get through it, which is 'Be more Tiger-Lily than Wendy'. I wanted to be more like Tiger-Lily from Peter Pan than Wendy because Wendy was this wimp who couldn't do anything by herself and just cried all the time, and I just felt like she was me, and I didn't want to be her. 'I wanted to be this badass warrior princess like Tiger Lily, who could do absolutely anything, and I felt like this was the final challenge to that. I've come so far with being more Tiger Lily than Wendy, and this was the ultimate way of proving to myself you really can do anything like this.' As a teenager, Chloe-Anne worked to overcome her anxiety, starting with smaller challenges, even just taking herself to the cinema. She then went into public speaking and is now becoming an aerialist and hanging herself from the ceiling to do circus tricks. With plans to write historical fiction, pursue a PhD, and launch a social media series featuring historical facts from every country in the world, the star has taken major steps to overcome her anxiety but saw Destination X as her 'ultimate challenge.' Chloe-Anne had previously applied for The Traitors and wanted to try her hand at Destination X not only to overcome her anxiety but also as a tribute to her grandmother, who had a huge influence on her life and with whom she spent time doing puzzle books growing up. She told us: 'My grandmother was a huge part of my life growing up and she's always been a huge inspiration for me. She passed away almost exactly a year before the filming of the show, and we used to do puzzle books and riddles together, and she always used to love doing stuff like that with me. It felt like a bit of a sign with the timing of it a little bit.' Reflecting on her experience as a whole, Chloe-Anne said it was 'phenomenal' and a 'whirlwind', despite feeling 'gutted' by her exit. 'It was a very strange experience in that it both felt like it was a really, really long period of time and a really short period of time at the same time. 'It feels like a crazy amount happened in a really short period of time, but yeah, it was phenomenal, a completely unforgettable experience. 'It was like nothing else that is going to happen to me again, probably, or has ever happened before.'
