Yankees' Austin Wells has big four-RBI night — but still falters in key spot

Austin Wells homered for the Yankees on Saturday, but he still struck out in a key spot. Try it free This year has mostly been a struggle for Austin Wells, who began to live up to his promise last season before falling in the latter part of the year. Advertisement And even on a night when the catcher had perhaps his most productive night of the year, it ended in disappointment in a 10-7 loss to Boston. After Wells kept the Yankees in the game with a three-run homer and an RBI double off tough left-hander Garrett Crochet earlier in the game, the lefty-swinging Wells came up short with a chance to tie it in the bottom of the eighth, when he struck out against former Yankee southpaw Justin Wilson, stranding pinch runner Anthony Volpe at second base to end the inning. Austin Wells rounds the bases after hitting a three-run homer during the second inning of the Yankees' 10-7 loss to the Red Sox on June 7, 2025. Robert Sabo for the NY Post Still, maybe his success against Crochet will spark the lefty-swinging catcher. 'I expect so much of him offensively and think so much of him offensively,' Aaron Boone said. 'He's capable of that right there against the very best left-on-left.' Advertisement Wells gave the Yankees their lone lead of the night with a three-run blast off Crochet — who had allowed just one homer to a left-handed hitter all season prior to Saturday night. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST But Wells couldn't coerce another solid start from Ryan Yarbrough, who has been a surprisingly strong revelation since arriving in spring training after opting out of his deal with the Blue Jays in March. After Yarbrough was knocked around for five runs in the top of the third and two more in the fourth, Wells tried to get the Yankees back in the game in the bottom of the fourth, this time with a booming double the other way to left-center. Advertisement It came again off Crochet, who had also given up only one double to lefties all year. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS Austin Wells celebrates after hitting a three-run home run during the Yankees' loss to the Red Sox. Robert Sabo for the NY Post 'I got two pitches to handle,'' said Wells, who is hitting the ball harder than he has previously in his career, but doesn't have a lot to show for it. Although he has 10 homers, his average has hovered slightly above .200 for most of the season. With Carlos Narváez in town with the Red Sox after being traded by the Yankees in the offseason and off to a start that has put him in the conversation for the American League All-Star team, Wells' shaky offensive output has been highlighted more of late. The Yankees are steadfast in their belief that Wells will live up to his potential on offense, as he has continued to impress behind the plate. 'Hopefully it's those little things that kind of get him rolling to where he gets hot,'' Boone said of Wells' at-bats on Saturday.

Rookie Ramirez has big night as Marlins had to wait to taste victory

Rookie Agustin Ramirez had three hits, including two solo home runs, and the Miami Marlins held on to beat the host Washington Nationals 11-9 on Friday in a game delayed more than two hours by rain in the fourth inning. For Miami, Dane Myers had three hits and two RBI, and Eric Wagaman had two hits and drove in three. James Wood had three hits, including a two-run home run, scored three runs and drove in four for Washington, which has lost six straight. CJ Abrams (three runs) and Keibert Ruiz each had three hits. The teams combined for 33 hits. Miami starter Edward Cabrera pitched three innings and left after colliding with Wagaman and Abrams on a play at first in the bottom of the third. Cabrera allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out five. Tyler Phillips (1-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning for the win and Calvin Faucher tossed a scoreless ninth for his sixth save. Washington starter Mitchell Parker (4-7) allowed six runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. The Marlins took a 1-0 lead two batters into the game on Ramirez's first homer of the night. In the second, Miami loaded the bases with one out but settled for one run on Nick Fortes' sacrifice fly. Ramirez led off a four-run third with another homer to left, his 10th of the season, and Miami's lead was 3-0. Otto Lopez singled and scored on Wagaman's double. After Connor Norby walked, Myers doubled home Wagaman and Norby to make it 6-0. In the bottom half, Abrams reached on an infield single after first baseman Wagaman collided with Cabrera at the bag. Abrams also made contact with Cabrera on the play. Wood followed with his 17th home run, and the Nationals were within 6-2. Cabrera finished the inning but did not come out for the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth by Fortes and Xavier Edwards (three hits) made it 8-2. Robert Hassell III and Abrams singled to open the seventh and Wood doubled them home. Nathaniel Lowe singled home Wood, and then Luis Garcia Jr. reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Alex Call's single. Ruiz's single scored Josh Bell to bring Washington within a run at 8-7. Miami answered in the eighth, getting a two-run single from Wagaman to make it 10-7 and adding a run on a fielder's choice. In the Washington eighth, Abrams scored on Lowe's groundout and Wood crossed the plate to make it 11-9 when Bell hit into a fielder's choice.

Minnesota Twins Blame A's Ballpark for Injuring Star Players

The Minnesota Twins just completed the longest road trip of their season, and it will go down as the most interesting as well. Not only did they start in Tampa Bay and finish in Sacramento, but they played two of their three series in minor league ballparks. Tampa Bay is playing their home games at Steinbrenner Field because Tropicana Field was shredded by Hurricane Milton. The Athletics are playing at Sutter Health Park because John Fisher has shredded the franchise. Advertisement Although the Twins only noted nuances like wind patterns and a lack of upper deck capacity as outliers for the Rays facility, the Athletics facilities earned multiple thumbs down. Joe Ryan calls out Athletics field for injuring Pablo Lopez Pablo Lopez was pitching against the Athletics on Tuesday and left the game in the 6th inning with a lat strain. We now know he's going to miss multiple months with the same injury Joe Ryan suffered for the Minnesota Twins last season. His rotation-mate called the mound into question when talking with The Athletic's Dan Hayes. 'The first thing I thought of was Wheeler saying, 'I was all arm when I was here. Does that play into that? Someone was mentioning it. We're in the big leagues, and we have these amenities for a reason. It's to get prepared and go inside if you need to for a second. Whatever your routine is, you can't do that here. You can't do that in Tampa. As (Lopez's) teammate, it makes it sting a little bit more. I don't think Pablo is the kind of guy that's going to say (the mound was the issue), but I'll say it.' Joe Ryan – The Athletic Ryan pitched in Sacramento the day before Lopez did for the Twins. He allowed four runs on six hits and went just five innings. That was among his worst outings of the season, and for a guy that came in with a 2.57 ERA (3.20 FIP) it's notable. Advertisement Athletics free agent acquisition Luis Severino has been critical of the home field situation all season. You can quickly think about the clubhouses being located beyond the outfield wall, but the pitching surface itself sounds like a problem as well. Severino has a 6.99 ERA in eight home starts (46.1 IP) with just a 0.87 ERA in five road starts (31.0 IP). There are few people capable of qualifying the quality of a pitching surface more than someone that started on the same one a day prior. If Ryan felt like he was unable to get into his legs, and heard Phillies starter Zack Wheeler say the same things, then it's not surprising he'd question how Lopez got hurt. It's unfortunate that the Minnesota Twins now have to deal with the potential fallout related to a lackluster playing surface. The Athletics chose this path, but Major League Baseball approved it. Not just the mound says MN Twins Carlos Correa Carlos Correa returned from the concussion injured list on May 23 against Kansas City. He played 10 straight games but then sat out the final two against the Athletics with what was diagnosed as back tightness. He had feelings about what may have caused the ailment as well. 'It's not the same spot. It's a little higher, which is why I know it's (the batter's box) because it's never happened to me before. I haven't changed anything in my routine for it to be that. The only thing that's changed is me slipping every time I take a swing. The plate here is killing me right now. It's very slippery. … For us that play with moldings, it's a tough time getting grip on the plate, but it's better than your feet hurting.' Carlos Correa – The Athletic Advertisement The Minnesota Twins star shortstop doesn't mean the plate specifically. He is talking about the batter's box. Correa wears a molded version of Shohei Ohtani's New Balance Ohtani 1. The lack of metal spikes are a benefit to his feet which have cost him time due to bouts with plantar fasciitis the past two years while rocking Nike cleats. With his back hurting after two games, and the playing surface not up to par, there was no reason for Correa to push things. Once again, it's disappointing that the playing surface is not up to par for major league action. There are no two places on a big league field more impactful than the pitching mound and batter's box. For Major League Baseball to allow the Athletics a subpar product with multi-million dollar athletes at stake, is wild. Minnesota returns home Friday for a three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays. After a drubbing to leave Sacramento, they promoted pitcher Travis Adams as an additional bullpen arm. Advertisement Related Headlines
